Technology will always be a good niche to be involved with. Keep up with the latest trends and try to read ahead of the next big things to hit the market is a good technique.

Remember "technology" is a very broad niche, you will want to dig your heels in a little bit more and delve into the sub niches within.

You mentioned laptops above, a great starting point..
    which models are selling well?
which particular specifications do people seem to be opting for?

By doing a little research and finding a sub niche that is selling well, you will be in a better position when you do set up shop

Electronic products are commission capped at 4%. You should perhaps also consider selling the related supplies and accessories which commissions can be twice that amount. What I do is build lists in high technology niches and promote directly from email. Some of those products can be $50,000+, but require multiple exposures to close the sales.

Picking the product is only half the battle, and (at least in my not-so-humble opinion) the less important half at that.

Who do you want to sell to?

If you said anyone interested in buying [techie gadget of choice, i.e., laptops], go back to the end of the line and start over.

You don't sell laptops to little old ladies who want to check their email for pictures of the grandkids and to rabid gamers using the same language or product mix.

Find out who you want to sell to, and what they want to buy. Then sell it to them the way they want to buy.
