Are 3 character domains worth anything?

I have a bunch of 3 character domains, note that means a mix of letters and numbers, all .com

are they worth anything?, I've had them for a while and can't find any real use for them, I thought that they would be an investment, paid about $30 each for them

Don't take this table as a standard but will give you an idea.
I can't paste links with my current post status so try to use the phrase 3character with the known suffix to get an estimation at their link "The 3-Character Price Guide"

Depends on what they are and who might be able to use them.

Dan's content is irregularly read by handfuls of people. Join the elite few by reading his blog: dcrBlogs.com, following him on Twitter: dcrTweets.com or reading his fiction: dcrWrites.com but NOT by Clicking Here!

Dan also writes content for hire, but you can't afford him anyway.

    They really vary a lot.

In principle, the .com ones are worth more than reg-fee, overall ... but that's collectively: there might be many that have very little value, and then the odd one that's worth $200/$300+, or whatever ... depending (as Dan says) on who wants them.

I think there's quite a bit of luck involved with them, and their values are unpredictable.

Providing there are no hyphens or numbers, you may have something, anything that fits as a short domain service is a winner.

I'm surprised to see just 9 in the Godaddy auction right now (no .com)

    24k.net asking $49,777

He already said that it's a mix of Letters and Numbers
What you say about the hyphen applies for most names but not for short domains because the variations are less with the dash

As with most things in the world the most rare (with a certain demand) have a higher value

L stands for Letter and N for numbers

      These are the combinations
      LLN
      LNN
      LNL
      NLL
      NNL
      NLN
      L-L
      N-N
      L-N
      N-L

      Pasting from the site :

"The quality of the letter composition can play a significant role in determining 3-letter valuations. General concensus states that the letters A, B, C, D, E, F, G, H, I, L, M, N, O, P, R, S, T are considered premium letters. Other lesser high quality letters include: J, K, U, V, W. Lower quality letters include: Q, X, Y, Z. Domains selling for less than the above figures would represent a strong buy in today's market. Premium letter only domains tend to fetch a 500% to 600% premium (or more) over the Minimum Wholesale Price. Mixed letter quality domains have valuations somewhere in the middle of these two extremes."

I sold one LLL.com before a year or so $4200

Don't let those prices fool you. They are always all over the place. Everything is subjective and relative in this market. I just paid $10K for a domain name that is probably worth $30. I've seen some at half my domain's value going for $60. It's laughable sometimes.

The only reason i can imagine this may happen is if you needed the exact phrase that has no generic value to others but only to you plus that the owner did a hard bargain or knew your need.

Otherwise if it's generic and was registered before some/many years i don't believe the real value is $30

I love my short (4 letter).net. Might mean nothing web wise but great in the real world (business cards/stickers etc.) and folk hate typing. I even have mine in the back window of my car in case of being in traffic and the person behind owns a smart phone and is bored :-)

If they're exact match domains with the keyword(s) having 2,000 visitors per month with the google keyword adwords tool...why keep them? Do they represent anything memorable. Just helping out as I'd personally find it challenging to actually remember a domain after a few weeks if the domains have numbers and keywords.

If you know how to drive traffic to hyper sensitive adsense pages .. those 3 digit urls won't dilute your click through prices.

If you understand nothing I said .. they probably won't help you lol.

If you see the potential of it in terms of SEO purposes, like if it's easy to rank for the keywords, then it is worth alot of value.

There is no large potential in SEO terms for domains with mixed numbers and letters, so SEO is out of the equation IMO

I think that if it has hyphens or letters, the value is decreased by a lot. If the 3 letters mean something then you have something of value in your hands

thanks for the comments everybody, my domains are

    LNL.com x8
    NLN.com x1
    LLN.com x1

It seems they could be worth about $200 each, I did have ideas about using them as url shortening sites or hosting affiliate redirect links etc

  • why on earth would any domain name with three characters consisting of two letters and a number or two numbers and a letter etc. be worth more than the registration fee?

    az3.com
    t45g.com
    22n.com

what combination could you come up with that would have any type of value.

even the one mentioned above ( 24k.com ) probably wouldn't bring in much, certainly not the $47k listed.

also, is there some reason why you won't show us what some of those domains are?
I would think that if they really are worth anything , you would want someone to know what they are.

For the same reason anything's "worth" anything: because people will typically pay more than that for them.

For many they won't, but for some they will. There's a lot of luck in it. That doesn't mean that any specified individual one will necessarily turn out to have any premium value, of course, but collectively, they tend to be worth more than reg-fee.

In answer to the 1st question

      1 - they are cute
      2 - just like land there's a limited supply
      3 - they are short
4 - in this crazy world that we live in they just might mean something to somebody

      To the 2nd question

I've been using them for testing over the years so they contain a lot of junk, I don't want a bunch of strangers looking through my old sock drawer, I'm not actually trying to sell them on this thread

If so, could you message me your list and pricing.

Can you find any businesses or other websites whose name in an acronym format would be your domain name?

For example, if there was a local dentist called "Number One Christchurch Dental" and you had the domain name 1CD.com then you could probably flog it off to them for a bit?

I believe it worth more than $30 , it depend how you optimize it and sell it .
Because i saw some people bought domain extension .com with 5 character and they just sell it with high price even the domain name do not bring any keywords .
Unless is shortform that i din know , but it still selling well .

Three letter domains (alpha) are actually pretty rare, there's only 17,576 3 letter .com's in existence. (26*26*26) (I'm not saying that to be a wiseass either).

You might want to hold on to them, or try to sell them for a high price.

List them for a high price, see if anyone bites? (There's no harm at all in trying to flip them on godaddy auctions)

    Source: permutation logic

PS: If you want to do some homework to see what similar 3 letter domains are going for check here: Three Letter Domain names

PPS: You might try to find some companies who might find those acronyms attractive.

More than the number of characters it is related to number of words.
Three words or less are always decenet for a good domain name
    Example HarryPotterBooks.com WebHostingtalk.com Hostingforyou.com etc
Four words or long may have a good meaning but they are long and sometimes get difficult to comprehend as your own example states it clearly.
youronlineplacetobuybooks.com is not bad but it is too long
