Hostgator Slow Recently

Is anyone else finding Hostgator extremely slow recently. Im on the Baby plan. I thought it was maybe my internet connection, but other sites load as fast as lightning.

Logging into WordPress takes ages and comes up with internal server errors. Is this just the dreadfulness of shared hosting?

My Lotto site is hosted with HostGator and it's loading fine. It could be a momentary glitch caused by some other site you're sharing hogging all the bandwidth.

Hostgator was always slow for me but they would never admit it. It was a strange delay... I am on a dedicated server and things are good.

    I contacted Hostgator technical support. They told me;

"There are a lot of active connections for your domain, it seems these are causing the 500 error on your other domain as this shared package is only allowed 25 active connections simultaneously."

They told me, the problem could be caused by CPU intensive plugins. Im using the same plugins on other sites and even more plugins, but the other sites don't cause this problem. They said that this domain had the most intensive script usage. It's hard to pinpoint exactly what is causing this. I can at least login to WordPress now anyway, so there is some improvement.
    ----------------------------------------------

I have one site, which is using both Allinone SEO and SEO Power. Do you think these 2 plugins could be conflicting with each other, which is causing the problem? Ive disabled SEO Power now anyway. Although the site which had these 2 plugins, isn't the site which HostGator said that the most intensive script usage is coming from.

Normally is a plugin battle that brings the site to a slowly death. Test some configurations, like deactivate plugin A, then B, and so on. When you find the culprit, just remove it.

I have exactly the same plugins installed on other sites, but they aren't causing slow down or intensive script usage.

Im getting error404 not found now. I can't even get to the plugin screen to deactivate anything.

It seems to me hostgator services are getting worse.
Maybe that's better to change it for something more fast and reliable - aseohosting or godaddy, for example.

Hostgator has always been slow for me, no idea why. I host all my websites on Amazon now, way better.

HostGator is slow because they oversell their servers. There's 500-1000 clients per server, which is overkill.

Plugins will slow down a blog, especially poorly coded ones. I've had clients on our servers grind their blogs to a complete hault because that added like 20 plugins that just sucked up a ton of resources.

As suggested above, try turning off some of your plugins and you should be fine.

Also - Internal Server Errors are not caused by HG. They are caused by bad file permissions usually. If you are getting a lot of them after installing a plugin, then the files for the plugin do not have the proper permissions for whatever they are trying to do.

What types of plugins require specific file permissions? Im still getting that internal server error. Do I need to change the permissions using File Zilla? Im not sure which plugins I need to change though. Do I need to change the permissions for the entire plugin folder or only specific files?

It's definitely a combination of them overselling and your plugins. If you have 15 websites, you might want to consider investing in a VPS. They really aren't that expensive and you'll notice a -huge- difference in speed.

I have a related question. My wordpress sites (5) load slower than Id like. I get about 3000 uniques a day. I recently noticed that my cPanel backups were failing upon which Hostgator support told me my sites were too big and I needed to delete some stuff to generate backups in CPanel. Im sure I could delete files, but quite honestly, Im afraid to go into my file manager and just start deleting stuff. I asked support if upgrading to VPS would help this and he said I could run cpanel backups again, but no speed difference or any other benefit. He didnt recommend it. I thought it was a bit strange that I was offering to spend more money and he talked me out of it, but figured he must be right and didnt upgrade. But Im still considering, if it will increase speed and make my sites more secure. Does it affect speed then?

If you are getting 3000 visits per day to wordpress sites then yes you need something bigger than a shared plan. A VPS would certainly help, and you should setup caching to speed it up even more.

You can use this MySQLDumper - Backup your MySQL-Database (e.g. forum, guestbooks and online shops)
to backup even large mysql databases.

You would only need a VPS for 15 websites if the websites in question were generating about 500+ uniques/day to each of them. If they are small sites that get a small amount of traffic (i.e. 100-500 uniques/day per site), then a shared plan is fine.

Well, i contacted Hostgator again, after I got a new error. This time it said "Forbidden" when visiting any site. They said that admin have flagged the site with the problem and will work on the problem and resolve it shortly.

It seemed to be working at the moment. No internal server errors, although it's temperamental. It works for a while, then grinds to a slow halt. On the site which is identified as having intensive CPU usage, im using less plugins than I use on other sites, so im confused as to what is causing the problem.

How many clients per server, do other hosts use such as GoDaddy and Hostmonster?

Don't change the permissions, just don't use the plugins. If a plugin requires more than the standard 755 (or 644 or whatever it's set to when it's installed) permissions then it's trying to do something that it really shouldn't be doing.

The only situation where you might want to change the permission is if you installed the plugins manually instead of through the wordpress admin (i.e. you copied the files to the wp-includes/plugins folder instead of logging into wordpress and installing via the Add New Plugin command).

Ive only activated the plugins which I need though, such as Allinone SEO, easy table creator, etc..

I can't login to any sites to disable any plugins because it keeps displaying "Internal server error". What a pain.

Just use Filezilla. Navigate to your wp-content/plugins folder. Each plugin will be located in it's own folder under the main plugins folder. Renaming any of these folders effectively disables that plugin.

Cooler1, some of us are suggesting you disable all plugins and see if that helps.

          Have you done this?

It doesn't matter to us if they're only the plugins you need.

What matters is if you disable all plugins and if you still encounter the problems.

Also, try Google Chrome and see if that helps. I had a wierd situation to where my WordPress admin area was REALLY slow in Firefox but not in Chrome..

(and yeah, login to FTP and MOVE your plugins to your hardrive and then delete them off the server. Then you can bring them back, 1 by 1)

That is a very cool little tip...

That's one of those things you go, doh! why didn't I think of that?...:p

I don't have a problem, but will keep that in the arsenal, thanks.

And if you suspect that a plugin(s) may be causing issues, temporarily rename the main plugins folder and see if the problem goes away. If so, then you can quickly change it back and either deactivate (assuming you can login to your admin dashboard) the plugins one at a time, or simply rename each plugin folder one at a time until you can identify the culprit(s). Only takes a few minutes to quickly narrow the variables, especially if one has a number of plugins installed. HTH

It really sounds like you have a SITE problem and not a HOST problem.

Luckily though you have a great host and they will most likely help you solve your problem regarding your site.

My sites (hosted by hostgator) were running slow yesterday as well, but seem to be fine today. I figured they were updating their servers or just running some maintenance.

I've never had any problems with them being slow before and support has always been super for me. I have about 20 sites on one plan. Several get respectable amounts of traffic and I've been okay. But this thread does make me consider a VPS.

I doubt it has anything to do with plugins. This has just started happening to me a couple weeks ago and I don't use wordpress at all.. everything I have is php/html/mysql. Funny thing though, I've just recently had long delays when click a pure html hyperlink to go to my homepage! 20 seconds or more.. then once it resolves, go back, refresh, try it again.. and it's instant. It's been continuing so I've been putting off the inevitable.. error logging to prove to hostgator that something is going on with them.

I doubt it is caused by plugins either, because im using the exact same plugins on other sites, but they aren't causing problems.

The error isn't appearing at the moment, so the sites are functioning now at least.

I haven't had any speed problems with HostGator recently.

If you're using Wordpress you should implement plugins like WP Super Cache and WP Minify so that visitors (other than you) are being served cached versions really quickly.

I'm on the business plan, but I have no idea if the type of plan is going to make much difference to load speed.

The business plan is still shared hosting so site performance wouldn't be improved. But vps or dedicated definitely should improve performance. You're right about using a caching plugin as they can make a substantial difference. Still best to eliminate any possible issues (at least the ones you have control over) first so the caching doesn't simply mask a real problem.

Something ive just thought. I bought AMR a couple of days ago and I used a cPanel email address for one of my sites to sign up to the article directories.

As it sent thousands of emails to the inbox, do you think this could be causing the problem? I wouldn't think having thousands of emails would be a problem, but im not sure.
