List creation, small niche specific or large active list?

Hello all,

In the process of building up my list, looking for different techniques some of you may have used in the past to grow your list, I'm not looking for the easy, quick fix, I want substance. So any suggestions would be wonderful, and discussion would be even better!

Also, do you think a list should be created entirely around your niche? Even if that means it will be much smaller then it could potentially be? Or is it better to have a large, active list, that you can promote a wider variety of offers/products/services to?

Or how about more then one list? Maybe numerous lists, specifically designed for different niches/products. Too time consuming? Hmm.

Discuss. :]

It's always best to target a specific list.. then promote them relevant content.

The more laser targeted your content is, the more chance they can relate to you, and the more chance of them purchasing down the line.

You need to use there language (slang if you will), talk about things they enjoy, and things that create positive (and negative) emotions.

As for how.. create quality content that will be shared throughout the niche.. on forums, blogs etc..

    This is my choice.

The problem with having a larger, more diverse list is that, for anything you choose to promote, a fair percentage will have no interest. Send enough content/offers they are not interested in, and you lose their attention. They may not unsubscribe; they'l simply stop paying attention.

If you use a service like aWeber, where your fee depends on your list size, that could be an expensive proposition.

I personally am leaning toward trying to build numerous lists. One for my specific niche, and then another for offers and products more based in the make money niche. I guess it's more of a fail safe then a real focus of mine.

What about techniques for creating your list?

You should definately go for a seperate list for all your niches (main niches anyway), because then you can laser target your promotions, and all in the list will be prospect, and you can give them good value in their specific field of interests.
If you mix it up, a lot of peaple on your list will find a lot of the mails you´re going to send out, to be spam, because they didn´t sign up in that particular niche, and therefore a lot will find it a bit spammy, and probably will ussubscribe.
I do that al the time, when someone pulls that stunt, because then I feel they are wasting my valuable time ;-)
