Do you ban customers with DL Guard?

I've just used the ban feature on DL Guard and it feels good. I banned the person via email and IP... is that overkill?

    It can really come in handy, actually!

    I ban anyone that does a chargeback (I give refunds, so theres no reason to chargeback).

    It really ISN'T a good idea to ban IP addresses though. MOST browsers ARE either public, or on rotating IP addresses. *I* for example, am ALWAYS on a rotating IP address. I have been for the past 26 years!

      I imagine most users don't have a fixed IP address, unless they are on a corporate network at work or something like that. So I also never understood the idea of banning by IP.

      Very true, you DO need to be careful when banning by IP, but it DOES have it's uses.

      I had a "customer" buy and chargeback several purchases, all with the same IP address (you can find the IP in the customer details in DLGuard), and so in that partciular case I decided to ban the IP address.

      It may be a good idea to "life" an IP address ban after a certain amount of time, as well.

      So if you're selective in the way you use it, IP address banning can certainly be quite powerful when needed.

        Banning by IP is a bit of an overkill. For example, in Singapore, just about every home user is on dynamic IP. Sometimes, I try to access sites where my IP has been banned, but I've never been to previously. Usually, a modem restart will get me a fresh IP to surf with, so banning just 1 specific IP address isn't going to deter any problem customers, and might even lose you sales when other potential customers using the banned IP try to access your site.

          I know that Virgin cable in the UK (one of the big providers with 2m users) only has a bank of 6 IP addresses again they're dynamic and sometimes a real pain if you come across services limited to 'x' amount of uses per IP address as it never works even by powering the modem down and starting up again to get a new IP address.

    Also, I think a few countries have a small pool of IP's, so you could be banning a big chunk of the country.
