Addon domains on the same hosting

Is it a bad idea to have multiple domains on the same hosting? I mean if one of your sites gets slapped by Google, will it have any affect on the other ones?

Most people use shared hosting. That means that along with your site there could be hundreds of sites on the same physical server. There's no way for Google to find which ones are yours and which ones are not, so they won't slap you
However, if you have an SSL certificate on your primary domain (which requires a dedicated IP) then it's easy to see all your domains under the same hosting account, so there's a potential of being slapped.
I hope this answers your question.

I've been looking all over my host's website and I can't see the option for shared hosting anywhere. Can you recommend any reliable hosts except HostGator?

If it's not explicitly specified then it's shared.
Bluehost is good, I've used them, can't really complain. However, I did decide that HostGator is the one for me, so they would be my #1 choice, not sure what you got against them.

Who's your current web host? Is there no "Add-on Domain" section in your cPanel?

          I'm with HostNine.

Is Addon-Domain, the same as Shared Hosting? I'm terrible with this sort of thing

I've replied to your PM. Which hosting plan do you have with HostNine? Personal or Enterprise? The Personal plan only allows you to host 1 domain. The Enterprise plan allows you to host as many domains as you'd like and will have a section to add domains to your hosting account.

I use Hostgator and with some extra purchased IPs.

You could follow this strategy. If you're doing something shady where you might get slapped, just locate those affected domains onto their own IP. Keep all your white hat domains on shared hosting.
