Finding the best niches?

Okay I understand niches and what not but one thing I'm confused about is, when using the google sktool for finding a good niche is..how does it work..

Like lets say i put the keyword.. Health insurance..some keywords will have a really low competition and really high monthly local searches and global searches. What makes it a good niche? Lower competition and high searches or low searches and high competition?

As far as I know it's lower competition or no competition and high searches, but they aren't always as high as you might be expecting if there's no competition.

Another important factor is commercial intent. If you find a keyword phrase with a lot of searches, no competition, and NOBODY advertising via Adwords, then being number one probably won't make you money.

Competition is actually a good thing. Focus on what I call, "buying keyword phrases."

For example, somebody searching for digital camera reviews is still in the research phase.

On the other hand, somebody searching for a particular model of digital camera is probably ready to buy.

Digital cameras may seem like a competitive niche, and it is, but that's a good thing. With so much money in play, capturing just a small portion of it can mean great success for you.

The founder of Zappos had this in mind when he got into the footwear business. It's a multi-billion dollar industry and he figured if he could get just 1% of it, he'd be rich. He was right.

If you focus on a very specific product in a large niche with a lot of money being spent on advertising, you can siphon off some for yourself.

Therefore, you need to do research and position your websites in front of the traffic that's ready to buy whatever the latest and greatest thing is.

You'll find it's not hard to rank for "Brand Name Digital Camera XZ348."

To reiterate, you need to find keyword phrases that are the type of things people would type in when they're ready to make a purchase.

Worry less about competition and more about traffic and commercial intent. Once you find a keyword phrase that's good in those two areas, then, see what the competition is like. You'll find weak spots to attack.

      Any questions, let me know!

You need to do the following :
    1) Open the tool. Type a keyword that you think is good
    2) On the left toolbar click on the EXACT MATCH check box and uncheck the Broad Match one.
    3) Also, seek Lower competition keywords
    4) see the results : Choose the ones with 5000+ Search volume and low competition.
    5) Goto google and search that keyword with Double Quotations before and after it. This will show you EXACTLY how many competitors are working on this keyword. If its less than 100K its good. Less than 50K is just GREAT.

    This worked for me
    Wish it works for you

Let me know if you need further assistance.

Thanks ZackWaldman, that makes sense to me! I just need to boost traffic mainly I guess, but for such a common niche like that, I would be playing with the big boys on marketing and making my site reach first page results, what can I do to even get close to them?

Just as Zach said, make sure there are atleast SOME Adwords ads. If there are none, then either you found a super awesome great keyword (veeery unlikely) or the people that are searching for that keyword have no "commercial intent" which means that they are not interested in buying (most likely). Also, always remember to look for "exact match" when looking for keywords.

    Here's my take:

Good buying keywords should have at least 1,000 Global monthly searches. A good ratio would be 1,000 searches/20,000 competing sites, or around 2,000 searches/40,000 competing sites. As much as possible, I am avoiding keywords that have more than about 40,000 competing sites.

Based on my experience, it is much easier to get traffic (less competition) for exact match searches, that is why I always want to use exact instead of broad.

Looking for competition is important, but these competition must be quality competition. I suggest checking out the top ten competing sites and see how developed these sites are to determine the quality of these competition. If you have 100,000 competition (just exaggerating), but these are crappy sites with little quality content, then you know that you can beat these competition easily with some effort. but if you have only 100 competition and these are all top notch sites that have already hundreds of pages of content and are aged sites, then you would have to really work hard to beat these competition.

So i would say find a balance between high monthly searches and quality competition.

In general keywords with lower competition and high search rates are preferable but as others have mentioned it depend on what your plans are.

Low competion - high search terms are always good for "buyer keywords". Believe it or not, IM success mostly depends on the keyword phrase you choose for your product or service at the beginning.

Keep in mind that not any high search term with low comp. will necessarily bring you money. The best approach to find a niche keyword which is more likely to attract interested prospects is to figure out what your target audience wants when they type in a particular keyword.

For instance, If people type in "health insurance quotes" rather than "health insurance certificate", chances are great that they are in search of a paid service.

    Hope it helps

Also, to get an idea of the keyword's profit potential, have a look at the CPC (cost per click) column. Those keywords with CPC above $2 are good ones, because they have higher commercial intent.

Okay so I've read here and there on people's tips on keyword researching and I've been told when using googles keyword tool to check the "exact match" only box but the google sniper 2 product I bought, george tells me to use the "phrase"..so I'm a bit confused..

And also, when trying to find a niche, in google lets say I type in "Lose fat right away" with the quotes, and 8000 results come up, but when I search the exact phrase in the google keyword it doesn't even find that exact phrase..is that a bad sign?

A lot of useful tips and info here. I have been trying desperately to find the right keywords the past few weeks. SO am I to understand that it is better to use the exact rather than phrase? I haven't had luck finding anything good under 15,000 searches so far..

    Hi Miracle,

You could try one simple trick, simply plug in the keyword ideas you get from google back into the keyword tool and keep regenerating, you get quite a good sum of keywords from that.

    Hope it helps!

Sorry to jump into OP's thread, but figured this might be a relevant question - would this be a solid keyoword/phrase?

Keyword Tool says 6,600 Global Monthly Searches, The competition meter is about 20%, and the estimated CPC is $2.03

It's geographically limited in that what I searched for was in the form of "<place> <activity>" (ie: "Boston Paintball").

But would this be worth looking into?
