Noticed people upselling on Fiverr...

They're not doing anything wrong, but it kinda pisses me off, lol! If anyone sells Fiverr gigs you should do the same. Latest example i found was whilst trying to find a designer for an ebook+dvd+brochure covers to be put in one image as its sold in a package.

One reponse: "To do all this and make a killer package design would be more than one gig... As a top rated seller like myself you will find that I'm the best here... you can order all the gigs at one time... when your ready just order 5 gigs to cover all the design work... I look forward to working with you."

Food for thought.

    I support upselling.

It's a smart way to make money - if you're doing it ethically.

Haven't seen the gig you're talking about, if the guy offered all 3 covers in one gig then he should stick to it.

If he's offering just one for the price, then an upsell is a smart move on his part.

I know I do that sometime, but come to think about it, if you do the $5 jobs on fiverr you won't make much money. Then its a cheap service so you get what you paid for. and $20 for an entire package is pretty good.

    • Some of the top sellers, like samcornwell, do it too. He'll do a 20 second video for you in HD. You want longer, buy more gigs. $5 per 20 seconds.

His average Official Fiverr Podcast runs around 9 minutes, so assuming someone's paying him to do this (I fervently hope), that's $135. Still pretty cheap, if you ask me.

Nothing wrong with that as long as he's clear it's 20 seconds in the gig.

I would say, it's smart! Making great videos for $5 can't happen. But for more, it can.

He made a video for me for $5 and did give me a link to his "tip gig" but it wasn't required. Probably got him before he was as famous as he is now. I was happy to give him the tip. This guy is great.

Yes, a quality, well done service will always bring buyers, especially after reputation builds. I think a lot of people just don't believe you can make money on a place like Fiverr but if you can find one thing that you can do, very well, you can make good money. The key to Fiverr is repeat customers.

Well, offering to make a longer video if you buy more than one gig makes sense, but I do see a lot of people offering something and then when you read it they say something like "You need to order 3 gigs to get what I am describing."

Yeah I saw some dude do that for FB fan pages, he'll make you a regular fan page for 5 bucks, but if you want tabs with video's and optin feature on it, you have to order 3 min ... and I think that's pretty fair for $15. And I'd say, if they're being honest about it and straight forward, let them upsell, if not .. that's not cool.

I agree, that's wrong. I nailed one seller on my blog who did that but worse: only after you bought the gig and received the buyer instructions did you find out you needed to buy two more to get the whole shebang.

There's nothing wrong with any business, freelancer, service provider, etc. to offer "upsells" and in fact they are allowed to contact you for the next 2 years by law unless you otherwise tell them to stop contacting you.

Actually, they don't even need an opt-in, as long as you purchased something from them or even "inquired" about their services within the past 2 years.

This is according to the current ICANN SPAM laws.

If you were satisfied with their work, why wouldn't you want to hear about their other services, special deals and other stuff they have to offer?

    Best,
    Shane

Thanks for the information on the ICANN SPAM laws. Didn't know that

And yeah, I fully agree on upsells being ok and only natural.

Like other's have mentioned, though, it is NOT ok to demand an upsell for the work to be completed if the gig description did not mention it. If they are up front and clear about what the gig includes, then upsells are all good however.

I am sorry but I think you are a little confused.

There is no "ICANN SPAM law"; it's the CAN-SPAM Act of 2003. ICANN is a private non-profit body with authority over Internet name and numbering systems. It has nothing to do with spam or email.

I am not aware of any time limitation to "relationship messages" (emailing a customer or someone who has made an inquiry) in the CAN-SPAM Act. You may be thinking of the Do-Not-Call Implementation Act of 2003, in which companies you have had a relationship may continue to bother you with telemarketing for 18 months after your last interaction with that company unless you specifically demand they not call you again.

I think people have a misunderstanding how these services work...I mean, let's be honest, you can't even buy a fast food meal for $5. The purpose of these sites is to offer a "teaser" or a loss leader to build a customer base and establish trust.

I think it totally makes sense, and lets be honest some of the buyers on their will try and run all over you with their customized request if you give them half a chance, why not profit from it. They seem to want everything offered + plus the rest of the world on a gold platter for $5, it makes sense to charge them for the extra.

I always deliver exactly what is offered in the gig, but often I get lots of questions. I usual help them out with the answer but then I tell them if they want to save time, I will do it for them, but it will cost them x amount.

      • Except for the pay scale, it's not much different than consulting in the real world. You will always run into people who want not just the moon but the stars and a couple of comets thrown in.

But that's the way people are and until we establish a large population of androids with disposable incomes, we just have to keep dealing with humans.

One thing I had noticed from studying various gigs on Fiverr was THIS:

Some people simply start gigs for a "tip" if others feel they have gone above and beyond in their gigs. Interestingly enough, some have done well with those gigs, as well. On many occasions, people will instill multiples of $5 in value, so I do think its a great idea for a seller to offer this opportunity to tip, as well....not really an upsell, but something great that a seller may consider doing especially if they feel they are instilling a ton of value over and above $5.

People think I am crazy for offering to do 2 good quality 500 word articles for five dollars. I look at it like I am building credibility with my customers. I also think that it is why I have so much repeat business. They get exactly what they think they are paying for. I understand why you would feel bamboozled by having to order more gigs, that is what the reviews are for, people will express their displeasure there.

It will be fine at the start of your fiverr journey emily, but if you're still doing 2 x 500 word articles in two months time for $4 then, you'll be certainly undervaluing and the customer will certainly be getting the much better deal. I started off quite slowly, but now get a steady flow of orders including one of my gigs, which is in writing a unique 300 - 400 word article and gets lots of orders for this gig.

Yeah, I just started on fiverr and I do 400 word articles or blog posts for 5$. But it is hard when other people use article generators to produce their work fast, and all my articles are all original. I also just started so I don't have any positive feedback, or any feedback at all..

I have been doing a lot of voice over work on fiverr and I am pretty generous...I offer up to 10 minutes for $5...I have had a lot of repeat business and if someone wants to go longer and I ask for them to purchase another gig...no one has had a problem with that thus far. In reality, I know what voice work goes for and I am probably undervaluing myself, but I am trying to build up a reputation and gain trust, so it's ok!

I trialled a system that I created on fiverr with upsells and it worked very well. The user had the choice to bypass the upsell so I do not personally see any issues with it what so ever.

    • I think the trick with the Gig Extras upsell is going to be (wait for it) selling.

Fiverr gigs are fun to buy because it's a low price and you often get an excellent value. With the upsell, though, you need to emphasize features and benefits to justify the increased cost. Many Fiverr sellers aren't particularly good marketers so it'll be interesting to see how this turns out.
