Does a free multilingual plugin for wordpress exist?

I have searched the forum but there are only old posts about this issue so here it goes:

I have WPML installed and it needs to be updated and the only way to update is by going from the free version to the paid version.

Does anyone reccomend a free plugin similar to WPML? The idea behind using the plugin is: Have multiple url's and offer the content in different languages without losing the seo value.

The language after the / Like this:

thisismynichsiteaboutshoes.com/eng/postnameinenglish
thisismynichsiteaboutshoes.com/esp/postnameinspanish
thisismynichsiteaboutshoes.com/nl/postnameindutch

And do this whith other sites as well:

thisismynichsiteaboutboats.com/eng /esp /nl
thisismynichsiteaboutcomputers.com/eng /esp /nl
thisismynichsiteaboutbeer.com/eng /esp /nl

So this is what i need for the plugin:

- Free (without ads)
- Keeps seo value (unique permalink for all posttitels in every language)
- Not limited to be used on 1 URL
- Simple and fast to use

    you are missing the point: crappy machine translation plugins are NOT the same as multilingual plugins. The latter ones require manual/human translation and the main thing they do is to offer multilingual user interface AND the translated content AND seo-friendly URLs.

    A while ago the best such plugin was Gengo but they stopped developing it in 2008.

    Istvan, janhindrik, I stand corrected.

    qTranslate would seem to be a good choice. I did find a
    WPML vs qTranslate resource.

      Thanks for the replys.

      I have installed qtranslate but the plugin does not appear in wordpress. (when i install it again it says: installation failed blahblah can´t overwrite)

      There is also an option to do everything manually with permalinks:

      /%category%/%postname%/

      (catagory would be the language)

      Only it would take a lot of time to do all this (because i have to link all the pages together). I think i'm going for the paid version.

        In terms of SEO, I think you'd be better off having a separate wordpress installation for each of your language version.

          Did you build any sites like this yourself? If so can you send me a pm? I personally don't see the benefit of doing seperate (wordpress)installs for every language.

            I would recommend paying for a translator to do the foreign language versions. While you may find a plugin or other program that translates it for you, will it actually be translated into the foreign culture, or a direct word for word translation? I also speak Spanish, and what makes sense to us in English, typically does not translate correctly into Spanish. So you could use the plugin to get the translation you want, but to someone from a different language, it may not make sense at all and could end up just being a waste of time.

    You can go the easy way with WPML - I am a paid user thank god. Amazing plugin, developers get my appreciation. Really neat plugin.

    Or you can do separate WP installs, sure. Like:

    mycoolllysite.com
    mycoolllysite.com/en/
    mycoolllysite.com/sp/
    mycoolllysite.com/rs/

    You just have to:

    Install WP again in new folders, example: es.
    Then install WP on them.
    Then upload theme.
    Then export all contents from your 1st site.
    Import all contents to new sites.
    Translate each and every page.

    and another couple things.

    In the end I prefer to pay WPML license for all sites Purchase | WPML for 79$ and do it in 2 minutes.

    But you decide what you prefer to do.
