Where to start? Too much info...

Hello guys,
I've just started here on this forum. I have a major in Business Administration, with emphasis on marketing, so I have worked with sales planning, competitive intelligence, product, and so on. Right now I have my own company (offline).

I became really interested in internet marketing lately, but there's just too much. I've read about blogs, affiliate programs, buying and selling ads, and so on. I just don't know where to start... what would be a good starting point for someone who doesn't have that much skills, technically wise? What is a way that I could start earning some money to reinvest it in more learning, and testing, and so on?

I'm a little wary on starting to buying stuff online, coz, knowing me, that would lead me to buy another, and another, and so on... So I wanted to start making a little money online, and then reinvesting.

Any help will be highly appreciated.

Cheers from Brazil

Definitely just jump in there and try something before you go buying a lot of junk "make money online" ebooks and suffering from a heavy pocket and information overload!

Firstly, what are your best skills? and how can you translate that into internet media?

Maybe just tell us your skills and interests. I'm sure a lot of people here can translate that into a basic business plan.

PS: For Gods sake, don't make money selling "make money online" ebooks online!

Hey man, thanks for your reply.

I am about to jump out there, but I still don't know where to! hehe

I do know something about marketing, about spiritualism (hinduism, buddhism, yoga and so on), I play the guitar...

And, man, I swear, the niche that I'm less interested to be working at is the "make money online" lol it's waaay to crowded, in my humble noob opinion!

Could not agree more. Just go on godaddy, get a domain name, 1 year of hosting on hostgator and set up a wordpress review ads*nse site. It's a cheap way to learn and get your foot in the door.

You haven't mentioned here that what's your offline business model. If it is, members will be able to giving perfect answers due to their own experiences.

    Anyway, This is my point....

You can start much easier than complete newbie internet marketer since you already have enough skills about some parameters require in internet marketing also (ex, sales planning....competitive intelligence.......). There's no so much difference between internet marketing and offline marketing. The only thing you need is; appropriate knowledge that how it's possible to apply your present knowledge into internet marketing. There are too many free resources on the internet..... first start following them. That's where you should start.

    Good Luck,

Dig really deep into this forum and you find something that will interest you. You listed a lot of things you were good at based on that list right there you can start by creating content and selling it here on the forums. There is no question that there are other warriors who be interested in you knowledge. Yoga, guitar, spiritualism are all good niches to create some plr in (private Label Rights).
Also it does not hurt to look at the WSO section of the forum. Alot of the members get their start there. I hope this helps a little.

Just read, read and read. Don't buy any courses because you will most likely get sucked into an endless cycle of buying the next big shiny object. You might also get information overload.

You may start with The Challenge to get an overview of Internet marketing.

I have lots of ebooks and courses that I never completed reading. I guess it was just a waste of time and money for me because I never had the time to read all of them. I'm more of an action kind of guy. Right now I'm just getting my education from reading forums and blogs, and also by working on my new projects and trying to see which works and which doesn't.

yea keep learning the basics until you know what you're doing.

Keep it simple, for exemple : you find one offer, now you need content and traffic(and conversions if possible) .

Try to make a plan with this in head maybe it will help.

Here's the game plan I advise people to follow.

It's not what I did, because you DON'T want follow my route! It's derived from looking back and figuring out what took me so long to get anywhere.

      Stage 1: Asserting

Get focused! Get rid of distractions by sorting out your email management, time management and purchase management.

If you've just started, they may not be a problem, but for most folk who have been going awhile, those three issues need sorting out first and foremost

      Stage 2: Learning

Learn about IM. Don't jump in and try to start a business right away. Get some skills, learns some concepts, build your confidence, build your knowledge base.

During this stage you should also DO something. Follow some business model or blueprint. But NOT with the mindset of "I must make money out of this, so I need to choose very carefully." At this stage, just choose any vaguely interesting and relatively simple business model, and just go for it.

Your objective is to LEARN, and it's important to adopt that mindset. That will get you over a lot of barriers and allow you to move much faster than the mindset of "this is my business and everything has to be perfect and part of a bigger picture."

What you do at this point can be a bit of a disaster as regards making money (but try not to loose money!). That does not matter. That's not the point. What's important is to learn and develop some skills.

IF you end up making money - hey, that's great!

You could even make a list of all the skills you want to get some experience in and adjust your business model to give you that experience.

      Stage 3: Vision

What are you trying to achieve long term. Write it down!

      Stage 4: Choosing and Defining

NOW you are in a position to pick your business model. The objective of the Learning Stage was to get you to the point where you can make an informed and principled decision about your choice of business model.

Also, one that meets the needs of your Vision.

      Then, you go through...

      Stage 5: Planning
      Stage 6: Implementing
      Stage 7: Operating

You probably feel overwhelmed because you're trying to jump straight to Stages 6 and 7!

      Hope that helps.

      Alex

        Here is what I'd do

Create a free report on one of the areas you have knowledge in. Offer it for free on a squeeze page to capture leads and build a list.

Build a relationship to your list by sending them more free information.

Ask your list, what they are struggling with and what information they need. You can either ask them in an email and ask them to reply or survey them through a survey service like Survey Monkey.

By communicating with your list like this you will learn what kind of information or products they are looking for, and then find good products to promote to them as an affiliate.

With your education and background, I'm sure you know tons of stuff that can be valuable to many warriors, so you can advertise your squeeze page in your signature and post helpful threads here on the forums.

If you choose to create your report around another topic such as spirituality or playing guitar, join forums about these subjects, and post helpful posts there instead.

Article marketing is another good free way to get some traffic to your squeeze page.

        hope this helps.

Guys, first of all, thank you so much for all the replies. I have been reading some stuff when I get the time, I've been trying to get the lingo, to learn the basics, to learn the ways that we can earn money online, and so on.

sscot: my offline bizz model is an alternative media company, focused on using bread packages as media (breads in Brazil come in different packages than in US, we buy then at bakeries and stuff).

blillard: that's good advice, man, I'll keep on looking, and maybe I'll think about writing something I could sell, that is one way to go... I've been looking at some WSOs and, dang, a lot of 'em seem to be very interesting... any ideas on one you really liked?

Content Winner: that is exactly what I am wary of.. There are a lot, a looot of courses and stuff that seem very interesting, but I'm afraid that I get sucked into that very cycle you mentioned. If it's not too much to ask, what are the projects you're working on? Blogs? Content writing? or else..

Itachi: You have an interesting point... I need to learn more about traffic, though... I've read a little, but I'm not sure I could drive real traffic to a site... I'm thinking about working on a blog, right now, to test that.

kelseydeshaz: Yeah, that is definitely a good idea; the problem is, I'm kinda overwhelmed right now, don't really know where to start.. maybe I should just start with a blog? not sure..

jenifer smith: could you tell me which gurus you like, which ones you think I should gaze at?

AlexGoodall: Man, nice reply, thank you very much. I guess I'm note very organized, and that does happen to me. I guess I just got a little " hyped" up and wanted to get in asap, but you've got a great point there.

TroelsJepsen: That is also a great idea, I just don't really have the technical skills to make webpages, squeeze pages and so on. I do like your ideas, and that could definitely be one way to go. Is there a site or whatever where I could get some squeeze pages templates, sites, and so on? And, should I work with Wordpress?

Guys, again, thank you very much for your help, your patience, everything. Thank you so much!

When I first started, I was in the same boat. That was 2006, and there was a lot less out there than there is now, so I feel your pain! I finally came to the conclusion that the best advice for this (like most things) came from Louis Carroll. The Mad Hatter said "Start at the beginning, go forward until you reach the end, then stop."

So start with what you know. You know you'll need a website, or at least a free blog somewhere. That's just the basics. So, you spend some time and set up your free blogger/wordpress/wherever. You can usually find tutorials on how to do that on the website themselves or old posts in the WF. After that, you go to step two, a product or service to promote, whether it's yours or someone else's. You can use clickbank if you want an affiliate product, or build your own and post a sales page for it. Keep it simple. After you have a product and a website, you need traffic. Write articles, do some SEO, etc, until you have some. Test and see how things go, and make adjustments as necessary. It's simple, even if it isn't easy.

Good luck, and have a great time!

also depends how much you know... if you have no tech skill it can be nice to have a course and support to hold your hand. niche profit classroom is structured nicely. yes there is cost and you could probably find the information free but it structures 1 a 'strategy' and 2 the tactics for implementation which can be difficult to put together when starting out.

Anything I or anyone else posts here will only add to your info-overload. But the plan is simple. Pick one thing and only one thing (sounds like Curly from "City Slickers", I know), then go for it.

Ignore the rabbit trails of "learning more", "getting more familiar", "feel more comfortable", "buying this or that program", etc., etc. Anything you can't do, technical-wise, you can outsource either here or somewhere else.

Think like an entrepreneurs (or a salesman). Find out what people want that you're good at and do/sell that.

    One thing.

    Sounds simple because it is.

So you say you're thirsty for information?

Here's a fire hose. Go ahead and take a drink.

That about sums it up for trying to wrap your head around IM at first. It's good and fun to just consume everything you can. But be sure to take a break and let it soak in. Become overwhelmed with too much information and you'll have to get in line with all of the other people waiting to go through the revolving door of internet marketing.

The IM information super highway is littered with the electronic corpses of people who tried to take in too much too fast thinking they would find the easy way to $$$$

I'd like to pass on something that helps me whenever I feel overwhelmed with info, like most of us feel from time to time:

While there is an endless stream of information, limitless ways to promote online, etc, there is also the fact that all you need to make hundreds or millions, are 2 things: targeted traffic, and an offer that converts. (Targeted in this case, simply means traffic that has an interest in the topic of your offer-in other words, try to get your cookbook offer in front of people that like to cook-preferably people that already buy cookbooks; not in front of an online gaming crowd).

It's always good to be reminded that those are the only things you need to make money, and no matter how complex and arcane the flow of info gets, if it doesn't serve you by getting more targeted traffic to an offer that converts (convinces browsers to become buyers), toss it.

You also can help fight the overwhelm by going on a "low information diet" (Tim Ferris' words of advice from "The 4 Hour Work Week").

One of the bigger stars and best teachers imo, on this forum-Jason Fladlien, often points out how he limits what he learns, and that has helped make him massively successful. He says he doesn't want to learn dozens of ways to drive traffic-one or two will do, and he hits those hard. He is a master of keeping things simple. Most of us are far less successful partly because we are masters of the opposite: over-complicating things, until we are practically paralyzed with confusion and self-doubt.

So, for example, if you want to pursue Twitter as a traffic resource, give it all you've got before learning to drive traffic from Facebook, Youtube, etc.

That's the traffic source; the same applies to the offer that converts. All you need to start out is one affiliate program-find one that sells well, and then concentrate on driving traffic to it.

The only other thing you need to concern yourself with in the beginning is making sure you have an email capture page that you route the traffic through, so that you can be building a list to market to over and over. There are plenty of good courses and templates to help you do that, so just choose one, and you're ready to rock!

That is enough to get started, and if you can maintain focus, you will succeed. That is a very big IF, however, and you admitted to something in your op that most of us struggle with; a tendency to buy one method after another, when you're already overwhelmed.

Personally, focus is something I struggle with every single day, and most of the time, I fail to stick to one thing. As I see it, 90% of success in IM is learning to control yourself. If you have the power to make a firm decision to pursue one thing at a time until you have finished it, and you follow that rule with consistency, your success will be faster and easier than the vast majority of us who get distracted 20 times a day, and are lucky if we put a solid hour into anything before getting knocked off course.

Anyway, good luck, and remember: a good plan (one or two good traffic methods+one good offer with a high converting sales page), + firm, concentrated focus= massive, rapid success. Now if I can just do the same, I'll be celebrating with you!

Thanks for the appreciation. Just to be honest about it, the advice to keep it simple, and focus on one thing at a time is something that I have an unbelievably hard time actually following, so I say it for myself as much as anyone else-I'm good at absorbing and passing on knowledge, but changing personal habits, to actually do what's most productive for me and my business?-that's a bit harder than just telling someone else to "focus". But I guess we all need to be reminded-at least those of us with minds like butterflies.

There are way too many ways to make money online for us to be able to tell each person what they should do to get started. The info is here and you just have to dig until you find something that interests you and matches your skill set. Once you find that, pursue it with focus and learn everything you can. You can always add another method after you've mastered one, but only you can decide which one it will be.

Hey Dave, that's very kind, thanks a lot, brother.

Marhamat, that is a very nice approach. I guess I could really do that, and that would be a nice way to not feel so overwhelmed. Any ideas? Wordpress site building would be too much to handle for a beginner?

Truxx, that's exactly what i'm concerned about. I hear ya, man, and I do feel like that.

Idk007 nice. that's a nice, not very hard way to get started. I think I could do that. When you say review site, would it be, like, focusing on a product, or various products around a keyword?

Greg Guitar thanks a lot my fellow guitarrist, that was some very good advice as well. I am gonna focus on learning a little bit more of webdesigning right now, and will follow your advice. This sounds like a great path.

    Hello Langenuts,

I have been operating my online business for nearly 4 years and feel very strong about these daily actions:

    1) Always work on your personal development
    2) Build a targeted list utilizing an auto responder
    3) Mastermind with other successful people in your industry and niche
    4) Stay committed to your business and vision

Success has a simple equation: KNOWLEDGE + ACTION + A POSITIVE ATTITUDE = SUCCESS.

All these answers are valid but here's something else thast works for me. Basically you don't know what will work and this iws compounded by the fact that everybody is different and what works for one will not work for another.

So, look over the information you have, enough to have a good overview, then make a decision based on what you intuitively feel is good for you. For instance, a WP blog or something else. You appear to already have sorted this one.

The main thing is to make a decision quickly and go with it. Later, with some experience under your belt, you can go back and change it if you think it's necessary.

Do this with the other options you have and review each decision regularly.

outlandishmagpie actually, the WP fixation is because I wanna learn how to make my own websites, and be able to tweak them as needed, you know? I agree with you, and I believe I kinda have found what is a good niche. Now, I need to learn just enough to make my website, based on WP. I want it to be a (free) membership site, so that's how I would build my list.

    Hello friend,

There is very good advice so far. Starting out, I would research what some of the professional are doing. Most can be found here on WF. I would go through the WSO sections, read through some products (try not to buy any), visit that person's product website and/or personal blog, analyze what others are doing. This is a great way to have a head start and will generate some ideas.

Here are some idea for creating a product. Since you are in Brazil, are you located near any beaches? Are you familiar with any popular destinations in Brazil? An idea is to write an e-book on tourism in Brazil. Or, do you have any hobbies that you can turn profitable? Just a couple of ideas to get you thinking..

    hey langenuts

start off building some basic websites so you start getting to grips with how things work

build a simple site around some basic household items and products and you can sell for a commission

your not going to become a millionaire anytime soon with this method but it will get you making money and it will get you to understand the basic principles of online marketing and SEO

you can write all the info yourself by doing some research and use all free themes and free plug ins

you will find a lot of useful stuff around the forum failing that check out some IM related blogs that provide more information

start building, have some patients and persistants and you will do fine

    hope this helps

paul nicholls when you say household items, is there a specific reason for that, or is it just an example? I think that's what i should do, really, just try to make a simple blog, set it up and start workin on it!

Can you sell? I think a great way to make money online is through affiliate programs. Make sure whatever you sign up for you believe in, and find useful.

      Hi Hi,

it all depends on your niche and also your knowledge..for example you said you have your own offline business...is a good time to marketing it online..marketing online can be promoting your offline business over the internet...internet marketing does not mean 100% you need to make money over the internet..it can be driving customer to your offline business and getting sales for your offline...

one good way to start is to start blogging...and i mean taking ACTION and start..you will know along the way what kind of mistakes you make and improve on it..if you never start how are you going to know what works and what does not work..as you start working on it you will know more and tend to improve it..

      hope this helps...

Despite so many ridiculous hyped up courses out there, there are a few that's really good.

Some of the good training courses have membership, which allows interaction with the creator, which could be your mentor.

I guess you need to decide if you want to create online info products, become an affiliate marketer, or learn SEO and do it for local businesses. IMO affiliate marketing is the easiest way to get into the whole making money online way. Still being pretty new to this whole thing, I really don't think I could have grasped many of the concepts if I had jumped into product or offline stuff at the beginning.

    Hi there,

    1. Learning: Take your time to inherit the up- and downsides of each single point you named above (building blogs, affiliate commissions, ad space..).

    2. The right mindset: Don`t do the mistake and set extremely high goals at the beginning. As a starter you need to develop a steady commitment to your online business. Build 1 or 2 blogs to experiment with them. The more mistakes you commit, the more your IM expertise will grow.

    3. Right mentor: Without an already successful one, I wouldn`t have been able to write down these thoughts right now. Learn from the best to become an expert in what you do. In WF you will find lots of them who are willing to share their knowledge with you.

    4. Plan of action: Finally, implement your ideas and be persistent. Persistence is what makes the difference between failing and succeeding online.

    To your success
    Dennis

find a very reliable mentor who will walk you through things and will be able to monitor you for your status of progress and pacing that would be acceptable for the level that you are in, the mentor will also be able to assess you firstly before you start out a working plan...

If you base your interests around what you choose to do, you'll succeed. That's what separates people who are successful, they enjoy what they do. Imagine a person who doesn't enjoy their job, do they do it well?

I always hated the start process. You look stupid and you feel stupid lol. I was that guy. Now I am a bit more educated and have been online for quite some time now.

The problem I see with many people is they try so many things that they never succeed for this reason. Find something and stick with it for a while. I am not saying a month or 6 months. I am saying longer. The longer the better.

It is like people want to make money online so bad that they give up a few weeks after starting one thing and they are already working on the next. I know they must be wasting a lot of money like that.

I wish you the best of luck with anything you decide to do.

that's not a bad idea at all, ya know... 99% of my business is local, but I could try to bring in more customers by using the internet... I mean, the business itself is set to be local, but, who knows, maybe I could have some luck... and also get to practice a little on webdesign, seo etc a bit as well! that's a will do! thanks

    DeLighter
you know, I do have to write down a "path" if you will, and I really need to pay attention to all that stuff you mentioned. I guess I still have a lot more learning to do, but at least I'm working on that. Thanks for the input and I'll certainly remember what you said. ps I'm already trying to find a mentor for myself as well! To our success!

Tanae Jay Yeah, absolutely, this guy gave great advice, and so did other people! Hope we can all benefit from their knowledge

wendhel70 yeah, I gotta avoid gettin caught in the hype of trying to get to know every single opportunity and stick to one at a time!

Targeted Traffic Just yesterday I started trying to find me a mentor! Hopefully I'll get one soon!

dunczmarketing it's interesting you should say that, coz I am tending towards starting the hard work on affiliate marketing. I mean, I will also do the website for my company and work on it, but I also wanna try somethin 100% online as well.

derricks4 yeah, almost 100% of the times not!

ahang yeah, persistence is definetely a must have! The learning curve is not that steep, as it seems. Thank you and good luck to you too!

Once again, thank you all. Hope this thread can help some more people as much as it's helping me. You guys are great!

You're right that there's a lot to learn, and it can be difficult putting things in the right order.

If you could find a coaching course, you would be able to shorten the time, and avoid the mistakes too.

Like tristatemedia, I would recommend Chris Farrell. Even before you decide to commit, he offers tons of free stuff, including his famous Success Grenade series of tips and hints, and a free 26 part video course.

      Cheers

thanks a lot, I'll keep that in mind and look for those 2 coaches. I wish I had more time as well, and more money.. marriage and new business are consuming all of it!
Very nice reaching that 100 a day... would it be too much to ask how you're doing it? Would you be willing to teach me a little of your knowledge?

    Hi fellow Warriors,
I'm here and my other formula is Yoga Formulas. I've been teaching yoga and pilates for ten years. Work as a personal trainer also. I'm very knowledgeable with organic gardening and cooking what we grow with healthy recipes. We also raise chickens for their eggs.
So, we practice how to live a sustainable lifestyle. My girlfriend and I are huge outdoor enthusiast for a greener planet. I've been studying internet marketing and would like to earn money online with my skills.
I shoot video of myself doing yoga formulas in the outdoors to help others with health to improve their golf game, reducing back pain, losing weight and get better doing outdoor activities.
I'm putting together a membership site at YogaFormulas.com But how do I create some PLR that could sell, so others could help me spread the word.
Any suggestions, would be appreciated. Thank you.
