Default GoDaddy Alternative - Recommendations?

All of my domains are on GoDaddy and I have had no issues until now. I wanted to renew a few domains, but I will then have to pay the $8 per domain to keep the privacy registration. I thought I could get around this with multiple renews, but no luck.

I think I have heard there are other domain-sellers that provide free privacy - does anyone know who? Also, if I wanted to switch, is it fairly easy to transfer domains to a new registrar?

Any recommendations would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

I know namecheap give you free privacy for the first year but after that you have to pay. I think all registrars may do that also, I can't see any of them giving you free privacy after the initial year unless they are charging you more for the domain in the first place.

Last time I checked netfirms offers free privacy for domains registered with them. I have a few domains with them and haven't had any problems. I haven't ever transferred a domain to them so I can't tell you what to expect but it usually isn't to difficult to transfer domains.

Hi cballi, Sandy here..

I looked around on the net and I remembered some Internet Marketer
friends of mine use NameCheap as their domain registrar.

From what I understand, they're almost, or just as good as Godaddy.

Here is a link to their Privacy protection page.

It looks as though they have better than fair pricing.
Namecheap.com - WhoisGuard - Privacy Protection for your domain registration data

Hope this helps,
Sandy

I use 1&1 (Web Hosting Services and Domain Name Registration : 1&1 Internet Inc.) and IPowerWeb (Web Hosting by IPOWERWEB). They both provide free privacy.

I use DomainsPricedRight.com. It is affiliated with Godaddy, but the prices are cheaper. However, it does not give free privacy. I would recommend either DomainsPricedRight or NameCheap. They both are good, and reasonably priced.

I discussed this on another thread...

Namecheap.com is cheaper altogether.

Renews will cost around $8 per domain + $2.xx for privacy renewal.

While they are cheaper there are drawbacks. GoDaddy sends notifications via email anytime changes are made to your domains registered with them.

Namecheap, as far as I know does not.

On the flip side of the coin is issues with GoDaddy.

The first being the $8 per domain for privacy. The second being, if you get one spam complaint and I do mean just one singular spam complaint... they will shut the domain down. Then they will charge you $200 and only give you 48 hours to respond to transfer the domain elsewhere.

So if you do a lot of email marketing or have a self hosted affiliate program, then you are always at risk to being shut down by them.

In my opinion Namecheap is better. Look at it this way, you could be in a lot worse shape... Network Solutions charges $35 per domain. I'm not sure if that includes privacy or not.

I have to agree with using namecheap.

Get on their mailing list, they run transfer sales on a regular basis. (I have my own godaddy exodus in progress) For new domains, do a google search for "namecheap coupons", you can save about a dollar.

I use GoDaddy, Namecheap, and 1and1 and they each have some pros and cons..but overall I like Namecheap the best overall.

Seriously, you should use namecheap. Their support is the best, and they are so much better than the sharky godaddy..

why not contact godaddy before move to else where. maybe they will give you special code .. if you have over 200 domain names.
