I've been resisting all these web 2.0 things but its hard. I recently joined Facebook and found people I went to high school with. How cool is that? I haven't seen these people in ... well a long time (don't want to give my age away - a girl's got to have some secrets!) So now you all have convinced me that Twitter is cool. I've been on a whole 3 hrs and already have friends How many other Warriors are on Twitter? |

Twitter is a fantastic way to network with people and it really helps you network with people in your industry. I have a twitter account, but I am in the process of creating a new blog so I may be changing names or creating a new account. I will be sure to post it in here when I have it going.

Guys, I am new here. I have twitter and use it regularly.. but it seems I am only using it for advertising. Do you use it for anything else? I also use Plurk. I did use Pownce as well but they closed in December. Also do you know of anymore sites like this?

You know Debbie, me too. I hadn't done ANY social networking until recently. I truly just didn't get all the hype about social media. And I didn't see any reason to get into it. It took my best friend from college to break through all of the hype and clutter in my mind about social networking and get me onto Facebook -- my first and ONLY social networking activity so far. I'm slowly beginning to see the light! But I'm still skeptical of social networking. (Not really sure why except that it seems faddish to me. I know it isn't, but it has that feel to me.) But I'm not about to hop onto every social network media out there, either. I need to manage my time and I can't imagine how anyone manages their social networking activities with any regularity and still has a life. Facebook I can see. LinkedIn too -- especially for business networking. But I'm having a really hard time with the idea of Twitter. I can't really explain it, but it just seems VERY "faddish" to me. Even somewhat unprofessional. It just has that feel to me. But Facebook has connected me with old classmates from college (the one I'm still trying to forget and erase from my life), family (mostly cousins I see every few years at family functions but otherwise rarely talk to) and even an ex-BF! (THAT one's a shocker and his friend confirmation just came in tonight.) These are people I would only talk to every so often at intermittent functions. Now I'm keeping up with my cousins' lives on a more or less regular basis. (Don't ask me why we never e-mailed, phoned or texted. We just didn't. Not quite close enough for that except for the ocassional e-mail I guess.) But now Facebook has connected us and we can stay updated on the happenings in each other's lives pretty easily and painlessly. (Convenience is key here.) Beyond that, I'd be interested in social networking for business purposes. So how do I do that, keep up with it regularly (to maintain and build the relationship) and still have a life? I'm a bit confused by that. And I'm still skeptical of the direct, bottom-line benefits to my business. I dunno. I still trying to figure it out. For now, I'll stick with Facebook. Once my new site design is up and the site is operating like I want it to, I will create a LinkedIn profile. Beyond that, I have no idea what I'll do when it comes to social networking. Guess I'll figure it out when I come to that point! Michelle |

Michelle I understand your feeling about Twitter. I see what appears to be a lot of nonsense on it but the nice thing is you are limited in the number of characters you can post. I'll experiment with it for its true purpose - the social aspect. I turned the background image into an advertising banner but other than that I think I'll keep it social. As for Facebook. I was really impressed when I signed up. Right away I found people I hadn't seen or talked to in over 20 years. I grew up and went to school in Canada so moving back to the US removed me from those I knew. It was nice to find a few people I had lost touch with. I don't do any marketing on Facebook. I tried their PPC system (which sucks - I'll take Google any day) and other than that its just chatting with old friends. Time? Who has time for all the social network stuff. I'm extremely busy. Even my time on the WF is done in spurts. Sometimes I just feel the need to "help out a little" eventhough I don't have a reputation here like some of the others. Its a balancing act - social and business. |

Twitter is the only way that I know of where you can actually be part of the conversations with people you'd never have a chance to meet otherwise. For instance, I'm a huge Chris Brogan and Gary Vaynerchuk fan, and I can catch them on Twitter and actually talk to them. I think it is a great way to get yourself on the guest list so to speak.

I think the appeal for Twitter is the update system. People like Frank Kern or Jason Moffatt can throw out one or two line comments to individuals without inviting a lengthy conversation. The reality is there are only so many hours in a day and you can't correspond with every one on an individual basis but this does give a semi personal alternative. On a related note: I was reading in the winter edition of Search Marketing Standard, that Twitter may be in trouble. Their co founder Jack Dorsey stepped down leaving co founder Evan Williams in charge. It looks like the lack of a monetization model is an issue - probably the main issue. They are having financial problems. It appears that monetizing these social networking sites is not easy at one would think. I noticed that Twitter doesn't have advertising on the site. The article goes on to talk about a couple of revenue avenues for Twitter. One of them being mobile phone apps. Time will tell. |

If you're not careful, you'll spend a lot of useless time on Twitter. But it is a great way to develop relationships with people and build a following. In the end, twitter is just another communication medium and the only people who add value are the ones who survive. That's how its always been, that's how it is today and that's how it will always be. I think a 70/30 mix would be right. 70% content / 30% personal stuff. Here's a simple plan to create "real" followers who will listen to you when you post a tweet. Step 1 - Hire someone on rentacoder or elance to come up with 1,000 links to interesting information that is internet marketing related. Step 2 - Have that person create 1,000 tweets with links to those resources. Step 3 - Set those tweets up in tweetlater to be posted twice a day. Step 4 - Tweet once or twice a day with personal stuff. That's a systematic plan for using twitter to generate leads and a following that actually listens to you when you tweet. David P.S. Hi David Thanks for the plan Boy, I sure don't need to hire anyone to come up with 1,000 links to interesting information. I'm pretty sure I have more than enough The tweetlater thing is interesting - I'll have to check that out Thanks again |

I think I read the following statement somewhere in this forum: Facebook is for people that you already know, twitter is for people that you want to get to know better. Don't know about you but I find that is somewhat true. You can do marketing also in twitter, so far I already got some potential clients from twitter. About the monetizing, some people use magpie for twitter but I don't think it is effective - kinda disturbing for me. |
