What's the impact of having a zero on your +1 button?

A thought occurred to me when I stuck a +1 button on one of my pages. When visitors arrive they'll see a 0 beside the +1 button until someone decides to give it a click (I could get it off the ground myself but have decided to play fair and see what actually happens).

I'm wondering whether this zero will affect the visitor's behaviour in some way if they are familiar with +1 and what it means. Is a visitor more likely to:
a) click the +1 button to be the first
b) leave the page without reading as they feel the zero rating marks the page as poor, or
c) completely disregard the +1 button.

Just a thought. Anyone done any research on this?

For me I would make the first +1 click (my perspective is that +1 is a "like" button, unless you yourself don't "like" your site, haha, just joking).

As for the visitors, I think this +1 button is still too new and more "promotion" is required to make it a norm for people to click to like it.

    Cheers!

Most people will not click it unless a lot of people already like it. Who wants to like a page nobody else likes?

Google did not think this one out. It's ripe for abuse. You will see all types of services popping up that offer 1000 +1 likes for $$$. That will make the +1 button totally useless.

Yep, they're already on fiverr offering multiple clicks from different Google accounts and IP addresses.

I'm sure we'll see some sort of black market for gmail accounts pop up soon too.

I totally agree though, in due course people are going to abuse this to the extreme and ruin it for the rest of us.

Totally agree Rob. There's a lot of psychology behind this. Remember everyone buys, thinks, and acts like the "herd"

So, although I don't condone black-hat techniques, having a "+1" with a lot of people who had already liked it, will almost certainly be an incentive for people to click it and "follow suite"

Now with all that said, I do think +1 is too new to have much of a social impact on your site..... yet.

All social buttons are ripe for abuse. You can buy likes, you can buy tweets, you can buy diggs, you can buy LinkedIn shares, you can buy anything.

Are all these other buttons totally useless too?

If the content is good enough, people will like it, tweet it, +1 and share it.

You said it fairly well without my input.

I don't think zero on your +1 button will have a very huge negative impact on your visitors
    1. You need to have a Google profile for hitting +1 button, not every visitor own a Google profile
    2. Some part of audience is lazy enough to hit this button

From the sites that I've seen, visitors disregard the +1 button and focus more on the content.

If your webpages have mostly 0's beside +1, you might consider just removing it because that will help speed up your page.

Just click it and forget it. Then you'll have one. Then if it still bothers you, I'm sure there's a million Fiverr gigs that are selling +1 clicks.

It might matter to google but not your visitors. They probably dont know what is the +1 button anyway. Facebook like and Tweets might however have an impact on their perceptions.

there is a way to solve this though if it bothers you. Give your visitors an incentive to click on the plus one button like an ebook or some program. That can be done with the plus one profits plug in.

    Hope this answers your question!
