Depends what type of page you have.

Do you try to get them to click around or just opt in?

If it's a squeeze page and 29% opt in (71% bounce)
then you may be doing really well.

If 71% of the people visiting your site don't stay for longer than a second, then regardless of what a "normal" ranges is, that is bad...no matter how you look at it.

The question should be how to fix, immediately.

Are they exiting your site or going to a different page? That should be considered.

At the very least, check out how fast the page loads. If you have shared hosting, with 100 other sites and 100 plugins, it might be a speed issue.

Speed is where I would start. Headling/titles/subtitles next. Adding content/video (i.e. reasons to stay on the page) would be next.

        Good luck.

The bounce rate is only has good as your intention for the site...

      A) If your intention is for people to enjoy your content, build a community, and just have a quality site... then your bounce rate is horrible and you need to look at your content and site design to find out why people don't like it.

      B) If your intention is to just have the user "pass through" the site (ie click on an advertisement/affiliate link) then the bounce rate indicates you're doing a good job of it.

If it's an adsense site and all your visitors are quickly bouncing through to the ads, then I'd make sure that your site is not breaking any adsense policies.

That seems quite high but it depends on what kind of offer they are looking at. Mine is usually about 30%.

I've always heard that below 60% is what to aim for. The lower below 60 the better obviously- but, like others have said, it can depend on what type of site it is and what you want visitors to do.

Yea I'd agree with that. Of course it depends what kind of page you have and what the aim of it is, but 60% aint bad, so neither is 70%.

At the end of the day, bounce rate is usually related to the target level of your traffic. If you're getting traffic that want what you're offering, they will usually click on your offer. If you don't they will bounce right off your page.

I could have it wrong based on some of the responses in here but I don't think bounce rate has anything to do with how long users stay on the page. A bounce is when someone leaves your site without clicking through to another page on it.

If the page they land on has all the info that they're after and they then click through to an affiliate site you'll still have a high bounce rate.

From what I've heard anywhere around 50% is good. Below 30% is very good.

For some reason Google doesn't quote average bounce rate figures for Australia. However, I suspect it will be fairly close to the UK/US level as they do quote an approximate figure of 42% for New Zealand.

It depends on your niche and whatnot. Most of my legitimate sites have a bounce rate between 15 and 35%. The lower quality affiliate sites and whatnot usually have a higher bounce rate at about 50-60%, but those also have affiliate links on the front page, so I think a lot of the bounces go to that.

I agree that it depends on what you want to use your site for. If it is designed to be an informational site where people spend time reviewing and/or responding the information then you'd be shooting for as low a bounce rate as possible.

Work on the formatting and the quality of the information in order to improve the bounce rate. And keep adding to the content to make it interesting and well worth revisiting your site.

As others have already said, it's totally dependent on what your site is offering. I sometimes get 30% odd on some sites but as high as 80% on others. It's pretty much swings and roundabouts.

  • completely depends on the content of the site and its purpose

i have a few music blogs were people come and download music. Bounce rate is average 85-90% and thats fine for me because that is all my content is there for

It's all according to the niche. I've got two sites, both of which are doing very well. One has a bounce rate of 75%, the other has a bounce rate that's an incredibly low 1%. I would like to say I created that 1% bounce rate on purpose, but I didn't. It's the niche!

How do you get a 1% bounce rate? I run a pretty tight-knit forum and even that has a bounce rate of like 12%.

Bounce rate doesn't bother me as long as the site is making money. I have a site that has a higher bounce rate than that, and is converting at about 5%. Makes me a decent 4 figures a month.

The visitors literally just visit the landing page and click straight through to the merchant (that's kind of the way I have the site set up though).
