Is it my fault that I now only want to work with payment first?

Hello warriors,

One advice for people offering work in warriors for hire:

Only work with money first. Sincerely I had a rule to only work with payment first. And I worked like that. But I had some people that said they could not trust me cause they do not know me. So we agreed we should work..half payment first and half after.

After I made the work some of them kept they promise and I still work with them.

But some of them, even if they said they like the work I have done of them and they will send the rest of the money didn't. I do not like to have to ask many times for what it's rightfully mine.

So this is my advice.

And if you are a warrior that ask us to work with half payment first make sure you do not make us to think bad about you.

If you did not trust me well at least give me a reason to trust you.

Regards, Marian

    It isn't anybody's "fault".

It isn't an issue of "fault".

It's the normal way of doing business, when people buy anything online: they pay before they get it.

When I was a service-provider, a couple of years ago, I never worked for anybody without pre-payment, and nobody ever expected me to.

Absolutely Marian and it's the only way I do business - you should never be put in the position of having to repeatedly ask for your rightful payment. I would urge all service providers to adopt the same model so that this remains the universally accepted norm. I have noticed some people advertising pay half now and half later and I think it does everyone involved a disservice.

The above two posts are what it is all about trust between the parties. Although I understand the providers who advise getting payment up front - as a buyer I think I would be reluctant to do this. On several occasions I have had a project done in a slipshod fashion or not completed, costing money and the cost of lost opportunity as projects site incomplete. Primarily on freelance sites not this one.

Escrow services help but even at that if a provider doesn't play ball it is a pain to get money back. I have used freelancer extensively and I think other sites work in a similar way with providers given ebay like star reviews and arbitration/escrow etc.

Got to work for both parties 50/50 still seems OK if there is no escrow route available.

Absolutely. There are always clients who will try to get the product and not pay. As a graphic designer, I've had quite a few from Elance when I was freelancing there. I learned real fast to get at least 50% up front and never ever to release the files until full payment is made.

You could use a short url and just show them the site in a mobile simulator and not upload those files until they pay.

Depends on the size of the job, but I always ask for some money upfront as a deposit. For instance in a recent job I did rewriting two sites for a client, he paid me in installments of 25% as I delivered work to him. I think this worked out well in protecting both of us in limiting the amount either one of us could get scammed out of.

I have never had any arguments from clients when I tell them I want X% up front before I even open up Word. Some clients insist on paying in full as soon as they place the order and I am okay with that

Yes like game void says. The part payments are actually standard here on contract basis in australia.

Infact it is almost manditory in some areas or niches. But Its up to the contractor. It will save you in the long run on doing installment pays either 25% through the job. Or better would be the 50% makes it easy and comfortable for both parties.

I guess 50% first and 50% after proof of completing the job would work. But as I said sending the files and waiting for the rest of the money puts me in the bad position of having to ask many times for it and probably never receieve it.

As a buyer, I have no problem paying up front. But I also would like to receive the work I've paid for. Is that too much to ask? I'm getting fed up with WF members taking my money and then disappearing. Or me having to chase them down just to get what I've already paid for. So it works both ways.

Don't send the files. You can always send watermarked screenshots to show a client the work. I would never give them the files until paid in full.

One trick you'll come across with the half now, rest later deal is the 'dissatified client con'. They'll take whatever you've done but not be quite satisfied and ask for alterations. You do them and they're still not satisfied, so you do it it again. In the end they say something like "This is getting us nowhere let's call it a day - you can keep the first half payment and I'll just make do with what you've given me."

Most people will accept what you offer, whether you say pay on completion, half first or pay in advance. It's in your interest, obviously, to take the money in advance.

Never do pay on completion otherwise every now and again you'll be half way into the job and you'll get a email telling you to forget about it.

I always get paid first before I do any graphic design.

Like you, I learned the hard way years ago.

Even local gigs, I require half up front.
