How much would it cost to create a site similar to Youtube?

I suggest going to odesk or freelancer..

Really don't know how much that would cost but i guess you would need to spend loads on maintenance, hosting and traffic

You can create video sharing sites very easily. Use a web host that offers FFmpeg video hosting and video sharing website scripts. Some are listed here:

You can start with a cheap plan for just a few dollars per month then upgrade as your traffic increases.

Yeah, that's a MASSIVE project you're talking about there. The database work alone, building the back-end to upload videos, the cost of hosting on a dedicated server, etc. You're talking about a few million dollars, a team of at least 10-20 people working for a few years, and a lot of blood, sweat, and tears.

If you have the cash, or can get it, go for it. There may be an easier way to reach you IM goals, though.

There are many pre-made YouTube type clone sites available already.
However, to have your own unique script written from scratch with similar functionality as YouTube could cost thousands in developer time.

Place an advert on Freelancer or a similar site and see the response you get.
Just a word of warning though, many developers from the far east or India will reply to your project listing with "to good to be true" quotes. Don't be tempted you will end up with what you pay for.

You can create youtube-like site with cheap youtube-clone-script and start it low.
Just like cliponyu.com which targets local community and very successful.
It's even now worth more than $9 millions just in a few years.
As long as you have great idea and target small or specific thing in special community... then you will make profit in it for sure...

I'm not sure about the quote. But it'll be a lot: hosting (don't save on it, it must be reliable), domain, coder, trafiic and so on.
I have great experience working on Upwork. It's really great platform, you'll definitely find professional coder there.

Well I was going to tell you about the hosting / costs etc. but that has been more than covered above. The only other thing I can say is that if you feel this is something that you want to do and something that will bring you success then go for it. I'm interested to see what your difference to YouTube will be. Don't forget we miss 100% of the shots we don't take.

I smiled looking at your question. Yes, it is definitely possible to create a look-alike site similar to YouTube. not an issue. But, functionalities --- A BIG NO. Its not a personal endeavour, but a team work. You got to employ a few hundreds skilled coders. Can you manage it, or have the money? Even Microsoft and Apple won't take such a big risk. See the big picture. Many thousands people tried before you, ended up running only adsense in their sites. So, step aside from this terrible idea. Nowadays, only original ideas work. Do you have any? none, right. It happens.

It is really tough to answer the question without being disputed. The cost depends on what type of functionalities you are looking for your website (similar to YouTube). I suggest instead of equaling YouTube, the wise thing would be to categorize your platform and target users of specific categories. It will mean you will come up with something like new concept that may users like most.

  To have a website like that you need more than a good host...
  It's not just about uploading your videos and then watch them, it's way more than that!
  
  First: your video need to be converted in multiple sizes (for all the devices, bandwith etc).
  Sencond; you need one (or multiple) streaming servers!
  
  The most expensive is not the creation of the website.
  You need a host for the website, but you also need a streaming service for your videos, and the price of this service will depends of the number of customers who watch the videos simultaneously.
  
  This why when your website has a lot of visitors, the expenses increases very very fast.
  
  And of course, you dont create a service like that in a "simple host", you need something strong like a cloud service.
