First go to another hosting company and buy a hosting package.
Ask to transfer the domain from the one hosting comany to another.
Upload the website files unto the new hosting company server.
Instruct old hosting company to transfer your domain to new hosting company.
Cancel hosting package with old hosting company.

See if your new hosting company provides the service.

When I moved to HostGator a couple of years ago they moved 50 of my sites for free. All I had to do was give them the cPanel passwords.

First: Don't do it by yourself.

Just ask hosting company and they will do it for free and fast (that's from my experience). So you won't have to worry about any technical or downtime stuff

    Good luck

It depends what type of site(general html files, wordpress cms, etc.), but in general add your domains to new hosting account then upload all files, (setup mysql and pump to it sql dump from your old hosts mysql setup if its a wordpress blog for example), and just after that change the DNS settings on domain registrar.

If your old hosting account is on cPanel just do a full cPanel backup and give that backup to your new web hosting company (assuming it's also on cPanel) so they can restore your websites on your new hosting account. When you know everything is working correctly change your nameservers to your new hosting account. Wait at least a few days (if you can a week) after changing your nameservers before deleting your old hosting account. This is because it can sometimes takes days before your nameservers resolve globally and you don't want any downtime for your users or for search engines. Best of luck!

Thanks all. I can't single out any one as every bit of advice is precious for me.
I would like to change to Hostgator.
    Can you recommend that?
And I once talked to one of a live chat personnel and he told me that Hostgator will migrate only one website for FREE but not two. They will charge for anything above one website.
    Please help.

Note: I am reading Suzzane Pdf. Thanks.

I'm quite positive that if you give HostGator a full cPanel backup from your old web hosting account they will restore that backup on your new account with them for free. You said you have one main domain and another Add on domain so if you do a full cPanel backup you'll have everything. Next time you talk to HostGator tell them this is your plan. Best of luck to you and let me know if you have any questions or need any help.

If you have to do it yourself, then I assume you had to set it up (upload the files) yourself. The level of complexity varies if you have Databases involved or not. If you have databases involved... do what everyone else is recommending and ask the hosting company, unless you are confident you can do it yourself. Otherwise just buy the new hosting account, reupload your files and change your nameservers on your domain.

I just completed the process of moving 10 domains from Godaddy to Hostgator. This is what I did:

      1. You must change name of servers that are with your previous host to the ones Hostgator uses (they will give you two names).
      2. Allow 48 hours for it to propagate. (you can check who is hosting your website by doing a google search for "who is hosting my site"
      3. Then you can fill out transfer request form and Hostgator will handle transfer of files.

the best way is to ask the hosting company to do for you via live support or a ticket. Their support is really good and they will do everything for you.

Otherwise the information provided by the other warriors would be great if you want to do it yourself.

    Hi,

I am assuming that your website is in wordpress.
    To migrate :

    1. Export your database as a single .sql file and save it.
    2. zip and download your entire website folder with all the files inside.
    3. Goto your new hosting , find your website folder, unzip the zipped file and put your contents here.
    4. Create a new database and import your .sql file that has been exported.

    You are done.

Is there an "easy" way to change host? I've spent the better part of the day trying, and it seems every single guide requires a certain level of knowledge that I don't possess. I'd rather not spend money, but right now spending a few dollars doesn't seem so bad.

I moved a couple of Wordpress blogs to new hosting and used Backup Buddy. It's not free, but it's very simple to use and the transfers happened with no problems. It took less than 30 minutes for each one.

Yeah, I am having problems connecting to download my FTP files. It's pretty frustrating as I can't work on my sites until I get them transferred...
