I'm Buying a Web Site Today! quick question

Hello-

As planned I'm purchasing my first web site this weekend, and officially getting started in the IM world.

I've been searching through all the different offers in the Web Sites For Sale section....

and besides being overwhelmed by all the seemingly amazing offers and not knowing which one to start with,

I wanted to ask if once my web site goes live, would I be able to edit and change the content of the site, from my computer? Would I need the same program the developer used to do this?

Thanks for bearing with my obvious newbie questions!

I guess it depends on what the website runs on. Do you know?

Not sure if this helps.. but...

If the site you are buying is just based on WordPress or something like that you should be able to edit it in your browser.

Now with that being said if it is a custom site and was made with something like Dreamweaver you will need to have some type of editor for html or php to code the site to your liking..

I would thing you really need to discuss all of the details with the seller before you jump in to the site.. and with out seeing what you are looking at it is very difficult to tell.

Hope that helps a little bit.

Honestly, with the questions you are asking, you might be better off waiting before you pull the trigger.

Chances are, you're probably looking at buying a site using wordpress so I'd head over to wordpress.com, sign up for a free account, play with it and get used to it. See what your getting into.

In answer to your question, if it is a wordpress site, you'll be doing all of your work online through the wordpress dashboard so you don't need to invest in any additional software.

If you do purchase a site, are you purchasing just a theme and content or does it include the domain as well? Also, do you have a hosting account? The website needs to live somewhere.

      Best answer, IMO.

No matter what website you're going to purchase - the web elements and HTML/CSS code should be able to transfer to the Wordpress platform (with minimal exception). Whether the owner used Dreamweaver, Notepad, or Wordpress.. you should be able to migrate to your needed platform. If needed you can hire someone pretty cheap off oDesk.com.

No you're not being harsh. This is great information, and I need to hear it. thanks. I have thought about those questions, but my answers are definitely limited with my limited amount of experience. So, yes...I'll learn everything I can about wordpress and take it from there. I just want to buy a low-cost i.e. low risk web site so I can at least have somewhat of a model to learn from, but more than that I just want to keep making progress, and becoming competent in wordpress definitely qualifies as progress. thanks again.

i'll also suggest you that buy a domain and build your niche site based on the wordpress. bcz wordpress allows you too much facility.
Buying a ready-med website is not a good option when your are new in the market. Just start blogging with wordpress or blogger site. get some experience then you will find the best answer for you.

A small point: If the site the Warrior is considering purchasing is a WordPress site, it will be Wordpress.ORG, not Wordpress.COM

Surely no-one is selling Wordpress.com websites

Also, so many Warriors have started down their entrepreneurial roads using Wordpress.org sites they have built themselves. Agreed, there is a learning curve, but you will be so much wiser at the end of it and there are many videos and instruction sites online that can walk you though just about everything you need to do.

I say, take the plunge, get a domain name, get hosting with a cPanel (HostGator?) and do-it-yourself. It's no difficult, I promise you, and you've already said you intend to be working on the site yourself.

Exactly, my point! Don't skip the learning curve, buddy. This is very important and you will know that in the end. In fact, once you have first hand experience with building blogs yourself, buying one will become so much easier.

Well, it doesn't really answer your question for sure. But this is just my advice.

Plus keep in mind that your seller can access your wordpress site at any time unless you change your login details. One more reason why I stick to my own created sites.

That's why sometimes I prefer HTML sites...for the most part...

There are MUCH easy to transfer to a buyer as well...

I disagree. WordPress sites are extremely easy to transfer; it's just a matter of following a few steps.

Follow these steps and a WordPress site can be moved from one hosting account to another, complete with all the plugins and database(s), and be up and running again in a matter of minutes.

Well I mean how hard is that to change? Two clicks... come on you can't possibly be serious about not wanting to purchase a blog because of that.

Personally, I wouldn't buy a site but rather start fresh buy a domain name and 1 year of web hosting from HostGator, all for less than $120 for the year.

Then I'd install WordPress and create quality focused content surrounding a handful of keywords. At this point I'd be looking to try different things, like little experiments to see if I can rank faster and further up the Google Food Chain.

Pick something you like doing and go for it. Don't worry about the money, just concentrate on delivering quality content. Be a river of content and people will find you.

From what you're asking I would recommend you to learn a bit more.

As said before Wordpress is one of the best, if not the best, systems for a website to run on for easy editing.

But after you have bought the website, have you thought about how you are going to rank it? How are you going to monetize it, how are you going to keep it up to date (if even necessary).

There's a lot more to it than just purchasing a website.

I'm not trying to be harsh here but if you don't know about Wordpress I suggest you to hold back a bit and get to know what everything is about and what is needed.

Is the current site already ranking for keywords? I'd take traffic over a new domain name anyday... there are a lot of "awesome" domain names sitting at the bottom of Google's index.

You can always clone the design and upload that to your new domain - while still keeping the old domain's traffic.

You have received lots of advice - most of it is pretty good. Here are some quick summary points for you to consider - assuming that you want to get up and running as quickly as possible.
    1) Definitely go with WordpPress; it is by far the easiest way of getting into the website business.
    2) If you want to move ahead quickly, you don't need to buy an established site; it is difficult to know precisely what you are buying. It is just as quick to get someone to help you set up your first WordPress site and there are people around who will help you do it. No more expensive than buying a site. This is what I did ... and it worked.
    3) Setting up your first site is one of the quickest ways of learning.

I'll not suggest you to buy an existing website whenever you are new in this market. Buy a new domain and build a wordpress based niche related website.

I can agree with this.. it's always good to test the waters first before jumping in with your own funds. Be careful with sites like Flippa.com, you'll want to keep a few things in mind if you choose to buy:

*Ask the seller why they're selling the site if it's making profit

*A websites potential means nothing, every website can have potential.

*You want to purchase an already performing asset - view it like real estate and make your decisions off actual numbers.

*Only buy a site with google analytics verification and look at the numbers closely - make sure the traffic is genuine and natural.

*Include 1 month of seller advisory/assistance (to help if anything breaks).

Just be cautious and do your due diligence! Let us know how it goes if you choose to move forward.

The option of editing and modifying the website is really depend on which plateform it is created. and I think with the purchase of the site you will also get all the details about modifying its content and other features.

This is all golden advice. thank you to all. After hearing everyone's input, I've decided to go to wordpress.org, and download the software, and then I will begin building my own site while of course learning how to do it in the process.

Something else I realized when someone asked me some questions I could answer, is that I don't have much a plan, let alone business plan. So, I am starting with this plan of attack and of course as they say, "I wrote it in pencil". Tomorrow I'll learn something new, as is my goal everyday and I'll keep adjusting my plan until I get it right! Any critique of course is totally welcomed (and hoped for!).

    Plan of Action

Objective: Make $100 online from click bank sales

    Goals:

    1) Create a web site using Word press
    a. review both word press sites thoroughly (help section, etc.)
    b. compile a list of questions while reviewing web sites, and post these questions on forums

    2) Choose a market and a product to promote
    a. Make a list of topics that you are interested in and would like to learn more about.
    b. review Click-bank web site thoroughly

    3) Create a Marketing Plan for when web site is live.
    a. sign up and learn about google adwords (and alternatives)
    b. Learn more about rss feeds

    4) Think of additional revenue generating ideas once web site is live
    a. learn about adsense
    b. product creation

Il be harsh here too... Your plan of action is terrible.. "Learn about rss feeds" and "review click-bank thoroughtly" are not goals... You need to state ACTIONS such as PICK a clickbank product, DESIGN rss feeds for my site.

The reason being is that learning is an open ended word, so you might aswell just say: "work on the website" which is not a good goal... a goal has to be measurable most of the time. How much have you learned? You can be learning forever... On the other side u can review one clickbank product per day and stick to that measure for x days lets say...

      Anyway good luck..

I already need to add something too it....a time-line!

I will reach my FIRST objective by Sept. 1st 2011, and then next step is to make $500 in the month of October.

I also have a quick question:

I've downloaded the wordpress zip file, and as someone said I might feel, i do; overwhelmed. I was thinking of purchasing the hosting now from one of the rec commended hosting companies by wordpress that has a "one-click install process"? for the wordpress software. Is this as easy as it sounds?

    thanks for any input received!

I would much rather just set the site up myself. You can youtube instructions for installing wordpress on your own servers. I would only pay for sites like that if I no longer had the time to do so myself and by looking at your post count It seems you have a lot to learn so I would suggest getting your hands dirty and learn how to do it yourself then pay others once you reap benefits from grunt work.

Easy to setup your own websites...we're currently setting up around 30-35 a week! You don't have to know much seo either and most of the information you can get for free. We give away our entire process for FREE on our website...no tricks or opt-ins.

That being said we STILL have a ton of people willing to buy our sites from us and so we offer them for sale...and usually have no problem getting 15x, 20x, or even 25x multiples. It's not that the information isn't available for free...it's just that there are people with more money than time and don't mind buying in to the process by picking up our sites from a source they TRUST.

That would depend on what site you are planning to buy.
Try to install FTP software which most are free at download.com.
So you can upload the files.
    Search for tutorial at youtube.

BTW, ask first the seller what would be needed.

    Goodluck!

The person who developed the site will assist you with this.

Perhaps you should ask the developer this question before your purchase.
