Are Facebook fanpages really trafficated?

There's so much talk about FB fanpages nowdays.
Is it really good investment to build a fancy fanpage with all bells and whistles?
Do they get traffic?

It all depends! The downfall is that it can be taken away at any moment. It depends on what the title and how "hot" it is.

And also I realize most fan pages become ghost towns after a while... even though they have thousands of "fans"... then they just degenerate into spam farms

I think what everyone is trying to achieve is this:

Be number one in search across all platforms that get the most traffic.

About 2 months ago I joined an affiliate program for some new social media site and I immediately did a keyword analysis for "earning cash online" and set up about a dozen pages with all different keyword variations in the title.

I did nothing to them. No promo, no nothing. I just got an email from my "affiliate manager" above me that said I had 3,000 members in Bangladesh and that I was going gangbusters.

So I checked all 12 of the pages and sure enough.....there were an average of 500 fans in each one.

    How does this happen?

Well....if you set up fb fanpages correctly and then wait for them to get indexed, people do searches on fb and then join your group/page.

It's that simple. And with 750 million people using fb now....how can you ignore it?

Yes, I believe that they do "fade" away after a while. Some pages I have liked with literally hundreds of thousands of fans and I haven't seen an update since I liked them.

Personally I would recommend setting up an actual facebook account especially if it is a local business, its so much easier to target specific area's if its in your locality. Posts by these get shown a lot more than posts from fan pages.

I tried preaching this about 3 months ago in this forum and it was pooh poohed. People aren't convinced that fb is a good "selling mechanism"

It's not about selling mechanisms, it's about having a presence where people are. The sales come later.

Our Facebook page content gets 2 million views a month. It is on track to send us well over one million views to our website this year. This is all from a current fan base of 11K (although it grows at an exponential rate).

    FB Pages work.

        Sure:

        Code:
        http://www.facebook.com/drifteduk
It's been running for 1 year and 3 months. We've worked hard to build a sense of community within the page, and its paid off!

I strongly disagree, and I have no WSOs, let alone FB WSOs!

Most IMers make a FB page for a saturated product, bombard the wall with sales posts and not much else, and then wonder why people aren't joining, visiting their website, or converting.

If you actually put some time into Facebook and create a reason for people to want to spend time on your FB page, you WILL get traffic, and lots of it. Its ridiculously targeted, and speaking from experience, it converts very well.

        Brand humanisation = customer loyalty
        .

People spend time on social networks to be social. If you remove the social element from your FB page, it simply won't work.

I won't reveal the exact traffic and sales numbers that FB sends us, but here's a screenshot from our FB insights for the last month:

The Facebook fan page should drive traffic to the site, that's the whole point. those who don't know about your site are already on facebook, so it easier for them to find you fan page through likes, comments etc. Also fan pages have other uses - if you have an active community on Facebook, the fan page can also be used for list building etc with a reveal tab.

The problem is that a lot of people make fan pages and then just expect huge amounts of "fans" to magically appear. You have to promote/market your fan pages, as you would your other sites AND keep them interesting. The difference is that you have the power of Facebook numbers on your side when it comes to the fan pages.

    Good question. Very.

I too think it is over hyped. Mostly by the people selling stuff about FB of course.

I think a lot fo the demand by people to want a page comes from vanity and ego. It is very difficult to drive traffic to a Facebook page and get likes. As hard as it is with a normal webpage and I am actually better than average at both.

Most points have been touched on - your FanPage can be trafficked and useful if you're active on Facebook, interracting as your page in a popular niche. The second thing to do is get an optin form and a great ethical bribe on their to be able to contact them outside of Facebook.

Excuse my ignorance guys, but can one have the optin form integrated directly on FB fan page?

What other marketing mechanics is possible to integrate in that page?
      (without Facebook deleting/closing the page)

Yes you can have an opt-in form integrated into a facebook page, here's an example: facebook.com/cheapcustomwebsites. You can also have blog posts updated real-time from your wordpress blog on your fan page (also in example). The one thing I'm working on is displaying eCommerce products within a fanpage.

You can basically create a mini-duplicate of an actual website, with limits on ecommerce, animation, and flash elements.

The one thing you have to do is host the files outside of Facebook (subfolder). Facebook will require an SSL certificate for all fan pages with externally hosted files starting in October 2011 - just as a heads up (unless this was already mentioned).

I prefer to send customers to my facebook page as its more interactive than my website. My website is where I generate sales and showcase my business - but my facebook page is where I can engage with my customers - its basically a forum.

          Your opt-in form looks cool.

I see that you have a cool navbar with links to your site's pages too,
and integrated blog posts. Is that via RSS feed?

Yes - RSS feed is part of the script to display that. I'm considering a design that promotes "Liking" my facebook page as opposed to sending people back to my website. The goal is to get an active community on my fanpage - but it will take time and a few free contests where I give out free stuff before I can get to that point.

*If you have the budget - you can get a pretty sleek looking fan-page for $75 - $100.

*If you don't - then just having a profile image and the default fan-page wall can be sufficient as well

It's about 1/2 as worth it as it was a month ago. Google+ is pulling a lot of numbers from Facebook, so I'd wait on investing a lot of resources into Facebook until we see just how popular the new social network is.

'It is my understanding' (<-Disclaimer) that three quarters of FB fans are playing games at any one time. Games, (I hear), is the number one thing that is spent time on the Internet with texting 'friends' a distant 2nd. Google+ has no games, (as of yet). With 5 million or so people that have signed up to Google+, I wonder how many will ever return to it?

As with any other form of Internet Marketing you need to "divert" other sources of traffic to these pages to make them profitable - you can use viral "off topic" fanpages to direct traffic to your monetized fanpages. I generally only add the bells and whistles after they've started to receive traffic - if it converts well, then capitalize on it.

I was never big on Facebook, ignored anything to do with it, because I thought I didn't want to be bothered by old school/college mates etc.

Well, that all changed 5 months, when I launched a "community" type blog not at all meaning to make any money from it, I just wanted to share information. I decided to set up a Facebook Page(to reach my target audience) and the blog exploded, I now have advertisers, have companies offering me free stuff etc.

Of course, since then, I have been busy setting up Facebook Fan Pages for everything I do online. Almost anything can benefit from the millions of people on Facebook, you just have to know how to work your traffic.

A lot of people often talk about fan pages becoming "ghost towns", which is true, but that is up to the owner of the fan page. If you keep it alive, it stays alive. Not to mention, if you choose your keywords wisely, you get all that extra google traffic. Some of my blogs have BOTH the blog and the facebook page on the 1st page for the chosen keyword.

It is like anything else, what you get out of it, depends on how much you put into it. Be creative and set up a network of fan pages - each page has 5 featured likes(links to your other pages), use the tools that are there to help grow your Facebook and online presence. I treat my Facebook Pages as independent sites within a network of a growing web presence. They need TLC and marketing just like your blogs and other sites.

I think it doesn't effect much but it also depend on you how you build fans. Let see my personal experience.

I have almost 1500+ fans but they invited through massive invitation, so they didn't effect on number of visitor nor any like.

There is no question that FB can bring in traffic, but you have to update your page. Have to. If you don't update it regularly, it becomes one of those "ghost towns" people talk about above. But you can't just update, it has to be content that people comment on like, and share.

Why? Because FB uses an algorithm to display updates on your fan's front page of FB. The more likes, comments, and shares a post gets, the more likely you are to show up in their top news.

Heck, my personal profile gets me lots of hits when I post an update on my own blog, if the post is interesting and lots of people like or comment on it.
