Do I need to worry about Copyrighting?

Hey guys,

I have a report that I am hopefully going to be selling soon online. What keeps someone from taking my report and reselling it, saying that he/she wrote it?

Wow, a little extreme, but I get your point.

Not if you want to sell something.

          To prevent it from happening:
          1. write your report
          2. burn report to cd
          3. put cd in safe
          4. delete report from computer

To deal with it after it has happened:
          Option 1.
          1.1 track them down
          1.2 drag them through court
          option 2.
          2.1 track them down
          2.2 vigilante justice

          To protect your product:
          1. use some form of of download protection program (like dlguard). This will prevent somebody from downloading the product from you web page without paying for it.
          2. make the text in your pdf images. This will be a hassle for people who don't know how to use OCR software.
          3. hide the text in java script, internet check to show it. This will be a major problem for most people (and a huge annoyance for your real customers)

The only thing you can do is make it difficult for people to pirate you product and generally the more difficult you make it the more useless your product becomes for your real customers.

I am not a lawyer so take this with a grain of salt.

Of course there are things you can do if your report gets stolen or shared.

You can contact the thief's web host, search engines, their domain registrar, etc.

You can also have technological protection like the report has to phone home periodically and you can disable the ability for the report to be opened.

You can keep people from printing or right clicking (there are workarounds for these things).

You can hire an attorney and take someone to Court to protect your report.

You can register for "real" copyright status in your country.

You can have valuable bonuses and offers that are only available to legitimate buyers of the report. This wouldn't keep the original report from being shared but would lessen the value.

You could imprint the buyer's name in each report.

You can do some combination of all the above.

Or you can do nothing. No one will steal your stuff if you don't ever publish it. This is the safest way to go. And the least rewarding both to you and your buyers.

You have to determine which route you are going to take.

    Hope that helps.

    Mark

Well, from waht I am reading, for a $7-$27 product, it's probably not worth it, eh?

This is a topic that comes up a lot. There is precious little any of us can really do. Places like the Netherlands don't participate in our copyright laws. Big corporations like Adobe lose millions in sales because of that. Rather than worrying about it, they keep their focus on making money, and continue to develop and sell their products. We all just need to tak a lesson from them, and market our products better than the theives.

Even major corporations (with lots of money to fight) have to face patent infringements and encroachments all the time. Many big corporations have attorneys in the patent office looking for ways to block the patent of new products, so their company can get a piece of the action. We've all heard about industrial espionage. Quite often the originators of a product, just get it on the market first, and establish their brand.

Make sure you put a bunch of links in the text that lead back to your site, and/or affiliate products. Then, the theives will just be selling more products for you. The big corporations can only dream of a profitable situation like that.

Curt's right. You can take measures to protect yourself, but if someone steals your copy, there isn't much you can do about it. Especially if the thief lives in a different state or even country.

If I were you, I wouldn't worry about it until something actually happens.

Simply focus on what you're doing, and less on what others are doing.

While I'm all for law and order, there comes a point in business where it's not worth the effort to try and stop thieves. Especially with digital products.

Unless you 'stumble' across someone blatantly offering your stuff to others, consider any thievery as free publicity.

No matter where someone picks up a product, even if it's from a thief, if it's a great product, they might look you up and become a paying customer for all your other stuff - something that may not have happened otherwise.

This mindset has served me well!

embed messages about your sites or products throughout the document, watermark all images. That way it's free publicity even if it gets stolen.
