You don't just need traffic... You need TARGETED traffic

Well targeted traffic at that. For example on one of my sites my traffic (month-to-date) has had 46 uniques, 32 clicks to merchant and 14 affiliate sales totaling $68.89 in commissions at 15%. Numbers from CJ and Analytics.

Where is the traffic coming from? Niche specific forums. This site doesn't rank anywhere on page one, more like page 7 or 8 depending on the hour, day, and if I woke up and rubbed my stomach while patting my head four times.

Why is that little traffic converting? Because its laser targeted. The site contains information on the product they are seeking. This is a physical product and has absolutely nothing to do with MMO, dating, adult, weight loss or any of those "ever-green" niches.

Making money is the easy part, its finding the targeted traffic that tends to be difficult. So don't just go for traffic, seek out the targeted source and you will see sales.

    You're right.

We recently did a test, a large volume of non targeted traffic (150,000 visitors) vs a small volume of highly targeted traffic (1,000).

Opt ins from the 150,000 visitors: 458 (something like a 0.4% conversion rate.. stop laughing)
Opt ins from the 1,000 visitors: 892 (something like a 80+% conversion rate)

    Sometimes less is more.

Less is always more when it comes to traffic. I'd take 50 hits of targeted traffic over 500 less to zero targeted any day! I think our numbers show we all would honestly.

Those are serious differences in conversion rates. Narrow niche with targeted traffic hmm...

Targeted traffic is definitely the most efficient way to go. Some people can make a killing converting less targeted traffic, but that approach usually requires more creativity and work.

I think it depends on your niche, product or service that you are promoting or selling. If you find a market that desperately wants or needs the product your promoting.

I have a webmaster buddy who makes money online by shilling an "insider" report on the backstage details in the world of professional wrestling. If that doesn't convince you that you that all you need it targeted traffic to make a sale, I'm not sure what will...

It's the exact reason I decided to put the effort into a website for a keyword which only gets 720 searches per month (Google keyword tool)

        All about the laser targetted!

This is a very good point. Until now I hadn't really focused on driving traffic to my sites so this has definitely been my experience. I was looking at the stats. While the number of visitors is not very high at all, the conversion rate is extremely high because the visitors going there are finding the answers they need. That is what results in conversions and opt-ins. Those people coming to the sites are looking for answers and are willing to buy.

Anyone else remember the days when putting a traffic counter at the bottom of your page was considered cool?

You could even buy an animated graphic that looked like a spinning counter.

Used to be, we would do anything to keep that counter ticking upward.

Then we realized it was futile trying to pay a dinner check with a visitor counter. Damn waiter kept repeating "cash, check or credit card, monsieur..." :p

LOL I remember those... Or the snow flakes... A lot of sites had those back in the day!

That is true. At the same time, very laser targeted traffic comes it really slowly. So there's a give and take there.

No doubt your right. I'm curious though. If your simply testing a template or ad placement etc, does cheap massive traffic have it's place?

Targeted traffic we get from forums and blog commenting and press releases have always worked better over the years.

And the funny thing is you can get more sales from less traffic, if you target it right. Nothing sneaky you just have to work smarter these days, not harder.

Definitely agree that a little targetted traffic can bring MUCH higher profits for the same amount of work.

That said- the guys getting thousands of emails a day by advertising email submits must be doing something right- otherwise they wouldn't be in the business

This post has got me thinking. I really have to figure out how to get more targeted traffic in my niche. I get about 5 or more hits a day but very few sales a month. I need to get more active in the niche forums and blog commenting. Has anyone done well with facebook? I have heard it is an easy way to get targeted traffic?

Targeted traffic is a gold mine for sure. Specially if you are using Google Adwords. You will go broke in a hurry if you are too general but can make a ton if you know the right keywords and are laser focused on your niche. Make sure it is a buying niche too, not just a "suffering… tire kicker" niche.

I disagree with that. Great content is good to have, but if you also have something your site visitor is looking for they are going to pay attention regardless of how great your content is.

The site I mentioned stats for even has PLR content up on the pages. Not all of it is, but I really wouldn't consider any of the content on this thing great. It was slapped up in a hurry and is probably has a few spelling errors.

Good, original content might be necessary for traffic generation from a search engine, but not in this case. Forums send me the traffic. When utilizing things this way one needs to understand they just can't sling some anchor text in their sig file... you need to properly optimize your wording so that those clicking on it are truly interested in the niche.

Richgrad's statement is true enough, but a lot depends on how you define whether content is great or sucks.

Having content that your site visitor is looking for is a good start toward content that doesn't suck. Visitors will forgive a lot of cosmetic sins is you provide what they are looking for in a way that they'll accept.

I won't deny that, given that caveat, 'better' is better, but sometimes close enough is good enough.

targeting traffic is nice work, if you can get it.

but as for link building in theory we should all only try and get links from sites and forums to do with our specific industry, but here we all are in the warrior forum, blazing away hoping it will make a difference. Will it? Only time will tell.

Yes, it has its place. In the dumpster out back, next to the grease barrels.

Unless you are testing on the same kind of traffic you will be using later, any results you get will be meaningless.

Think about it. That template or ad placement does not exist in a vacuum. It's filled with, or surrounded by, your content.

Let's say you have a weight loss template you want to test. You buy a pile of cheap, crappy, untargeted traffic consisting mostly of people who either don't have a weight problem or, more important, aren't looking for weight loss information. So they glance at your popunder or other mass traffic trick, see the page has nothing to do with them, and close it.

      What have you learned? Nothing.

Same goes for ad placements. If the reader is not interested in the subject, it does not matter where you put the ad.

I would focus on buying traffic, so if you do ppc or seo focus on people that intend to buy what you have to offer right away. These keywords charactise in words like review, for sale, how to, cure, fix etc
