HELP: I have some questions about using free or paid proxies...

I have some questions about using a proxy please...

1) Do you ever use a proxy? If so, specifically what do you use it for?

2) Do you pay for your proxy or is it a free proxy?

3) Do you have any experience with using what is called an "elite proxy"? This guy is selling information on how to get an "elite proxy" (I have no affiliation with that site) http://www.elite-proxy.net/. The main point of his sales page is that many sites (like Craigslist, etc.) know all the free proxies and won't let you use them - and especially because most of them reside outside the U.S.

4) Do you have any recommendations for proxies?

Thanks very much.

      Hey Fred,

Awesome! Just downloaded their Firefox addon and tried it and it does change my IP.

You said you pay for your proxy. I assume there is a paid version of Hide My Ass! Free Proxy and Privacy Tools - Surf The Web Anonymously Whats the advantage to using the paid version over the free version? Does the paid version serve up IP's that are NOT identifiable by big sites like Craigslist?

      Thanks
      Steve

        Steve,

An Elite proxy is nothing more than a Level 1 High Anonymous Proxy. Because it is a Level 1 proxy it will not pass your external IP to the page you are headed to. You do not have to pay for anything... (Well sort of, and only if you want the easy way), it can all be done for free.

As with anything new there is a slight learning curve, but don't worry, in less than an hour you can be up and running and as close to anonymous as you can be.

        Here's what I'm using:

First on the list is an addon for Firefox; Proxy Tool
With this addon, and in addition to proxy switching it also offers some degree of spoofing (most necessary).

Second, and hopefully it's still available is a WSO called Proxy Provider (I have absolutely zero affiliation with this Warrior or his WSO). This slick little program will go out and collect several hundred fresh proxies and then test them for speed and the level of anonymity and country of origin (stay away from Russian, Panamanian or Chinese proxies). You can also paste your own list in and have them checked as well.

In the event that you want to do everything for free you can collect a huge number of proxies by simply Googling "Proxy list" and copying them so they can be pasted into a checker. So you'll need a proxy checker to test for speed an anonymity level. The one I suggest is called Elite Proxy Switcher, you only need the free version of this excellent program. Again were only using this software to test your proxies. All switching is done through the Firefox addon 'Proxy Tool'.

Now a quick rundown of proxy levels:

Level 1 (L1) Elite high Anonymous - These proxies will not pass your external IP address, nor will they tell the destination site that you are behind a proxy.

Level 2 (L2) Anonymous proxy - These proxies will not pass your external IP address, BUT they may or may not tell the destination site that you are behind a proxy.

Stop here, there's no reason to use anything less secure than an L2.

Level 3 (L3) Transparent proxy - Exactly what it sounds like. It's transparent and your info will be passed.

With an L3 proxy the amount of information gathered is up to the site that you want to visit... In most cases they don't care where your coming from, they just check to see if the IP address has been banned or blocked.

Now, a note on 'HideMyAss proxies - because there is no hard and fast rule as to the descriptive naming of anonymity levels, you need to know that.... Hide My Ass is exactly opposite of what I just gave you above.... That is - L1's are the least secure (unless they have changed in the last six months or so) and on the other end of the spectrum they have what's called a Level 8 which is their most secure (It's just a private L1). The major majority of those of us who are familiar with proxies the Levels that I described to you first will serve you best.

And yes, I suspect that Craigslist or any of the bigger sites will know that you are using a proxy from a paid service....It's in their best interest to know these things.

Spend ten minutes reading through the documentation of each of the sites I gave you and you'll be up and running in no time.

        Enjoy,
        Mark

Do you use the paid version of hidemyass because Craigslist knows all the free hidemyass proxies?

      Thanks
      Steve

Yes I use the paid version because I am able to change IP with click of a button and they offer many locations across the globe. I would never use free proxy because chances are they are all burned out.

    1) Do you ever use a proxy?

    No.

    2) Do you pay for your proxy or is it a free proxy?

    N/A

    3) Do you have any experience with using what is called an "elite proxy"?

Elite proxies are just proxies the big sites haven't banned yet. If too many people use them, the big sites figure it out and ban them so they stop being elite.

    4) Do you have any recommendations for proxies?

If you need a proxy for what you're doing, chances are rather good that you shouldn't be doing it.

There are legitimate uses for a proxy, and I don't need a laundry list of them. But we all know proxies are primarily used to access services that aren't available in your country and websites that have already tried to ban you.

I used to browse through proxy but not anymore. I am using a reliable VPN service now. Previously I tried HMA proxy but its too dangerous a thing to use as it is unreliable and inconsistent..Your ID, Password may get stored at their servers or can be hacked in between. So no more proxy for me..

There is this dude selling 4 private proxies for 5 bucks on Fiverr. That's a deal if you ask me. Was about to forward the gig, but they seem to be down.
