Landing page is a sales page.

A squeeze page doesn't try to sell anything but rather "squeeze an email address" out of the visitor.

    It depends.

Any page can be a "landing" page - i.e. a page where your visitors arrive (land).

If the page has only an optin form to collect subscribers - it's a squeeze page.
If the page is a sales copy - it's a sales page.
Also, if I direct (channel) my traffic toward my blog's main page - then that's my landing page.

If I remember well, initially, they used to call landing page where your traffic ended up after clicking a paid ad...

This is an example of a squeeze page (albeit an ugly one). Its entire goal is to get you to enter your name and email address into the opt-in form.

There is absolutely no need for (nor point in) presenting an example of a landing page, since a landing page can be any type of page you want, with any layout, any design, and serving any function/purpose. It is, quite simply, the first page to which you purposely direct your visitors (from an article resource-box, an advertisement, or elsewhere); the page on which they - unsurprisingly () - first land.

          Simple, aye?

I would have to argue that a 'landing page' in this context, is page specifically created to convert visitors into customers (not just a page you land on that can provide any function/purpose).

To back up my point, take a look at Themeforests 'landing pages'. You will notice that all of the templates are single sales pages, that all have a purchase button. I would catagorise these as true landing pages.

Perhaps we should rename them "landing sales pages" to avoid confusion?

I agree that a landing page is normally intended to "convert" the visitor into a lead or customer, one way or another. All I meant was that it's not always through a long-form sales letter with a "Buy Now" button. The "conversion action" could be the customer buying something, opting in to your mailing list, using your "contact us for a quote" form, or giving you a call. It can be a sales lead, or it could be them simply filling out a survey to aid with your market/brand research. It could be them entering a competition, with you having no intention ever to contact anyone who enters, other than the winner(s).

Similarly, the traditional definition of "squeeze page" meant any page that focused solely on conversions (in some form or another), with only one followable action (whether it be opting in, buying now, contacting us, or whatever). Very similar, I guess, to the above definition of a landing page.

But these days, the term's more commonly used to refer to a page intended to extract a visitor's email address and/or other details, for the purpose of following up later.

Indeed, a squeeze page - according to the traditional or modern definition - can be and often is a landing page; but a landing page doesn't have to be a squeeze page. Nor does a squeeze-page have to be a landing-page.
