What's a decent conversion?

Hi everyone,

I am new at list marketing and I am wondering what a decent conversion is. For example, say I have a list of 1000 people. I run one marketing campaign and email an affiliate product to this list. What would be a decent conversion rate (percentage)? I am new, so no smart*** answers please. What would be ideal? I am just wondering because, I read about marketers making anywhere from $20,000 to $50,000 from a list of a thousand people. That doesn't seem right.

    In general, 2-3% conversion rate from cold traffic is good. A lot of it depends on the niche you're in, the price, and traffic quality. If you have a list of customers, you need to aim at 10-20% conversion rate. And you must take refund rate into account too

    Conversion would depend on traffic source and price levels.

    Higher ticket items would have lower conversion levels and
    lower priced items would have higher conversions. But
    generally speaking for 'normal' traffic anyhitng above 3%
    and you're on your way to profit heaven.

    The bottom line is that you are turning a profit in the
    final analysis. PROFIT is the better gauge to use.

    I've had over 15% conversion on my sales letters and
    68% on optin pages. But these numbers are atypical.

    Ill go out on a limb here and even say 1% conversion is great, depending on what you are promoting. If you are promoting something easy and cheap, like an email submit or something, 1% is decent, if you are promoting something that costs the user $99, 1% on regular traffic is phenomenal.

    It all depends on what you are promoting and what kind of traffic you are getting.

    A 1% conversion rate is almost dead average from my experience. 2-3% is good. Anything over that will make you a ton of money.

    Well with mobile lists we typically see conversions of over 30% from good campaigns, mainly because people have cell phones with them all day unlike with email where people often just hit delete from habit of getting rid of spam.. and because some who join lists do so with junk emails.. you dont have junk cell phone accounts.

    If you're doing a good job of following up, building rapport and credibility with your prospects through your autoresponder list, then a good conversion rate from email to purchase is 10% - 30%, more or less depending on what you're sending out and your rapport with your list.

    Conversions are good and you should definitely test them, but as someone already mentioned PROFIT is the best tool to measure. If you spend $10 and you make $30, you have a $20 profit. That's a good profit!

    It depends on what you're promoting, in what price-range, and how the list was compiled (including traffic-sources, expectations of those opting in, and what's been sent to them so far, after their opt-in).

    I hope you won't take it as a smarta$$ answer, but you can doubtless readily see that a list of 1,000 people who opted in through article marketing for a free report on natural remedies for arthritis and are being offered a $7 e-book is going to be radically different from a list of 1,000 people who opted in to an information service offering them updates about future discounts on the newest models of Porsche.
