Mobile Marketing Via Cell Phones - Do you use mobile?

I started a business selling mobile marketing via cell phones through bulk SMS services about 4 months ago and so far the results are incredible. Still, I dont see a lot of people really using the power of instantly sending messages to their list. It boggles my mind, and maybe because people dont really understand it or it seems complicated and expensive.

What do you think? Do you use text message marketing to contact your list of customers and if not do you plan to?

Just to be clear.. mobile marketing is essentially any marketing activity where a mobile device is the advertising or communication medium of choice. With mobile marketing you can communicate with hundreds of people at a time in a fast, personal way using Bulk texting or Short Message Service (SMS). Businesses or individuals can also connect by sending photo, voice, and video texts via Multimedia Messaging Service (MMS). You can advertise your message in other channels simultaneously by sharing that information with social media syndication to reach your entire customer base.

Also, with email people often have "spam" accounts they use to sign up to offers. With mobile you just simply don't have that, so the ROI is obviously much higher for that reason as well. Anyways I just get hyped up when I talk about it because it really is so powerful and I wish more people understood that. I hope others will contribute to this discussion.

Have a good day!

P.S. I never spam text messages.. I already agree that opt-in only is the best method. Your thoughts?

I was wondering more about others opinions on the idea of using it. I know all about it considering it's what I do.

I can only offer a rather biased opinion in that I think it is currently THE best means of communicating with the world.

    A few interesting stats-

A couple of interesting M-Commerce stats that may be of interest and help with MWP promotion…
    · 1 in 3 people in the UK have accessed mobile internet in the last month
    · Mobile online payments through PayPal surged by 650% in 2009
    · Ebay recorded sales of £320m through mobile in 2009
    · The amount of users who have accessed websites directly via mobile has more than doubled from 2009 to 2010
    · The uptake of unlimited data plans has quadrupled over the past 2 years allowing for affordable access to the internet through mobiles.

This should probably be in the offline marketing thread of the forum - you'll get a better response there.

      HI Victoria,
I feel Like I'm really getting behind by not using mobile marketing. My problem is with all the other stuff I do I haven't had the time to delve into the best methods to use, how to outsource to get it done for my existing sites, etc. Up to this point I've outsourced very little of my work as I'm an online copywriter and do know how to set up site via wp & html. Would love to begin to use mobile. Any suggestions?

People have totally caught on to the benefits of a mobile site, although they
certainly can relate when they hit a non-optimized site on their phone,
and can barely read anything on a tiny screen.

I don't think the subject of this discussion is about mobile friendly websites, the OP is referring to marketing by text (SMS).

My opinion is pretty well know. The wave of the future is mobile marketing (including MFW). The only problem I see for small local businesses is the high per text cost. Major companies like Dunkin Donuts and the like are all over it but smaller mom and pop businesses simply cannot afford it. If you have a small subscriber list of just 2500 and you are paying just $0.02 a text, that equates to $50 every time you wish to send out a message. Until these costs are more in line with the average budget, I'll stick with what I've got. It's affordable and I still get that 97-100% open rate. if you're in a big metropolis, the izigg programs work if you work it. In small communities, economy always wins.

Thanks for bringing this topic up, here are some tips via the Trumpia blog:
Three Ways to Make Your Business Sizzle this Summer

Posted in Tips & Tricks,Trumpia Features by Trumpia on July 13th, 2011 at 4:57 pm
Using SMS Marketing is a great way to promote your business throughout the year – especially during the busiest seasons. But what about the slower summer months when more people are travelling and away from home?
Using mobile marketing for increased response rates, small businesses and larger companies alike have a unique opportunity to grow their business as customers clamor to make the most of their summer days and nights.
Here are four ways you can use SMS marketing to deliver red hot results even during the laziest days of summer.
    1. Increase your customer base with QR Codes (Quick Response Codes)
According to a recent Inc. Tech article, GigaOm reports that QR codes will really be heating up this summer. More people (with their smart phones) will be out and about in the warm weather and eager to interact with any QR codes that they run across. Young companies, especially, have a lot to gain from this opportunity.
Marketers can use QR codes or 2 dimensional black and white squares on posters, billboards, print ads or TV commercials that send information to the scanning person’s phone, directing them to unlock the hottest offers through online sign up pages. The codes can push a promotional webpage to the phone or send an offer via a text message.
    2. Keep your Customers Up to Speed via Short Codes and Mobile Keywords
One of the easiest ways to build your customer contact database and gain an even greater following from your community is to invite customers to receive your important updates by texting in your unique mobile keyword like TAPAS to your short code (a 5 or 6-digit phone number used by businesses for sending and receiving text messages). For local businesses that send out monthly emails or run ads in movie theatres or on TV, it’s a great way to increase response rates and find out if your traditional marketing campaigns are really holding their own. It also offers an extremely affordable way to ensure the success of your traditional campaigns using a solution such as Trumpia that provides wholesale SMS pricing, Bulk SMS messaging packages and credits that will never expire.
    3. Turn Up the Heat with Mobile Coupons
Up-to-date marketers understand that paper coupons are being replaced by electronic counterparts for effectiveness, speed, and environmental purposes. Electronic coupons come in web, email and mobile formats. Web and email coupons are great – until your customers forget to download and bring in their printed copies to take advantage of your offer. Mobile coupons yield better returns. They only have to be downloaded once. And then the mobile coupons stay with customers wherever they are – on their phone. No printed copies are necessary.
Integrating mobile coupons as part of your SMS marketing campaign can help you ensure an even greater call to action this summer. Using a solution like the Trumpia platform, you can also keep better track of redemption rates. For example, one major retailer recently launched a summer mobile coupon campaign, offering discounts that were redeemable by customers who scanned and stored a barcode on their smart phone at the point of sale.
Research shows that more and more restaurants and retailers are integrating mobile coupons as part of their SMS marketing as well as traditional, online and social media marketing campaigns. A mobile coupon can be as simple as displaying proof of a discount code as part of a plain text message that you send to all customers.
Since taking advantage of local offers seems to be what consumers are doing this summer, SMS marketing is a sure fire way for businesses to reach out to their community – knowing their revenues will grow.
