I badly need a nickname. I'm hitting my head against the wall, but nothing good seems to come up.

35 replies
Hello Warriors,

So here I am... seeking help and pointers on what nickname to pick. I'm almost ready to launch into niche marketing (and eventually the IM-niche), but I don't want to go by my real name. I don't want an 'unreal' name either. I just need another name.. something catchy, something brandable, something different (so that when someone reads it, they reckon that it's this different guy), and something (umm..) credible.

Some of you might say that just about any nickname would do, as it's not the name but how you deliver your products/services and build your brand. I agree for the most part; it's just that I don't want to leave any corners out. So, let me get that superhot () name anyway.

Please help me with some pointers, my fellow Warriors

    So, you're looking for a pseudonym, a pen-name?

    There are numerous generators out there, but I find this one to be really cool:
    Generate a Random Name - Fake Name Generator

    It gives you a whole identity including birthday, blood type, weight/height, and much more.

    Maybe you should find a "normal" sounding name, but rare, and then add something, a keyword relevant for your niche? It could be: Travis Bum Sago, or Dennis Becker the 5buckguy. How about "Julian 'Ghostrider' Knight"? That way, everybody will come to know and remember who you are.

      Yes, it is possible. I wrote unreal within single quotes and unreal isn't the opposite of real.

      Anyway, what I'm actually asking for is for a name that would make me look like a real, ordinary person. I hope this helps

      Thanks, these are good suggestions. However, the branding element is missing, in my opinion. I don't know how to explain that though

    What's your real name? Online, I use the first two letters of my first name, middle name, and last name, JaRyCu. I even bought it as a domain and use it as a business now. Maybe you can look at your name and come up with something phonetically that works.

      Seriously though, make your name do a lot.

      I own Rockbottom engagement rings.

      1) it sounds like a wealthy but boorish Victorian aristocrat who puts snuff on his shirt cuff and whines like a child about politics and the lower class;

      2) it is a searchable term that means bargain prices or lowest discount;

      3) a diamond is a rock;

      4) I can put two close together dots over the first "o" to make it look like a diamond ring icon (ö).

      5) the perfect font and professionally done graphics will really stick in the visitors mind.

        Try to choose a name that suits your niche or the personality you want to convey. E.g. Dan if your niche is dating, Louis for golf, and Steve for automotive repair.

        You probably don't have access to a paper phone book, but that would give you a lot of good ideas for last names.

        When you find a name you like, Google it to make sure it's not also the name of a serial killer.

        Finally, ask an American (or other native English speaker) you trust whether the name has any negative associations or could be taken the wrong way.

    I think you're making the same mistake many make... you're way
    over analyzing this. Exactly how would you know what name is "hot"
    and which weren't? Seriously... pick a name and get on with it...

      How about some variation of your real name if that's an option. Bob for Robert, Tony for Anthony, Mike for Michael etc. Whether or not its catchy or brand-able is probably going to be more about target audience perspective and personal preference.

      Good luck with that. I had wanted to keep a portion of my online business somewhat anonymous and failed utterly. It seemed like everything I wanted to do conspired to force me NOT to be anonymous. Gravatar showing up when it wasn't supposed to, Facebook sign-in required for one of the social bookmarking sites, etc., etc. Everywhere I turned it was like the internet was saying: We insist on knowing who you are and what you're doing by aggregating all your IDs.

      Or maybe I'm just not cunning enough. In any case, I quickly gave up -- submitted.

    Just use a name that could pass as a real person, but make sure that the name you choose has a small Google footprint, so that you won't have to compete with others for the attention that you draw to yourself.

    When I started using "Hunter Waterhouse" as one of my pen names, it had a Google footprint of only 6 search results.

    "Hunter" is a first name that many people have. And "Waterhouse" is a last name that many people also share. So the name does not cause people to think my pen name is a fake person, just someone who has a name that not too many people share.

    David Deangelo. Oh wait....

    John Rothstien

    Brandon Wilbanks

    William "Billy" Bolen

    Basically find a good normal name and go for it. Google search the top ten baby names of the year you were born and pick one and pick a last name from the street you grew up on or the high school you went to. Something like that.

    Here is one that's got a crazy story behind it....

    Her stage name, Whoopi, was taken from whoopee cushion; she has stated that "If you get a little gassy, you've got to let it go. So people used to say to me, 'You're like a whoopee cushion.' And that's where the name came from."[7][8] She adopted the traditionally German/Jewish surname Goldberg as a stage name because her mother felt the original surname of Johnson was not "Jewish enough" to make her a star.
