A Technologically Challenged Person

Hi everyone, I'm sick and tired of the necessary technology and learning curve involved with starting and runing an online business and being able to fix my PC when I need it fixed that I've decided to return to college to obtain a BS in Computer Science as well the CompTIA A+ Certification. Let me know what you guys think...

Thanks,

Terry Taitt

CompTIA A+ is old hat and so basic that you'll never learn a thing; you need something local like a school hardware course combined with Scott Mueller's latest book on Upgrading & Repairing PC's (as well as earlier editions for the older PC's).

Also, most Internet Marketers get their info from marketing forums (like here or Digital Point) or technical forums (like Computer Forum).

I have an electronics engineering diploma w/advanced digital systems training and spent several years servicing computer hardware and software systems (and associated) before I retired. Most of what I learned in college is practically useless. You must learn from guys that are hands-on all the time. Get a local computer geek to teach you. Throw him a bag of cheesies or a game of Warcraft and he'll be happy!

Well, I know it's a foundation for some other certifications like Security+ and networking+, etc..., so I definitely want to be a+ certified.

A+ is not worth it in my opinion. I have it and employers that I applied for never cared...I even had one employer ask me in an interview "They still have the A+ certifications??" -- and that was an IT company. It depends on where you live to be honest with you but where I originally lived employers cared more about a degree then certifications. However, my brother has no degree and works for a top IT company in San Francisco and gets paid very well and he only has Cisco certifications.

I'm not trying to become A+ certified to get a job. I just want to get certified, so I will learn all there is to learn about computers in a formal educational setting, and then I'll take all the skills I've learned and then perhaps start my own company or corporation as an entrepreneur.

Again, I was part owner of a computer corp (not just an in-house technoweenie) and I can tell you, university education is nothing like what you need to know in real life servicing situations ("I thought my 5 1/2 inch floppy drive was a CD player!").

Want to start a business in PC's? First get Scott Mueller's "Start Your Own Computer Business" and "Computer Repair with Diagnostic Flowcharts Revised Edition: Troubleshooting PC Hardware Problems from Boot Failure to Poor Performance" as well as his other books on Upgrading & Repairing PC's. If you still think you need to go to university after that, it will be the books and computer articles you read before which you will be using in a real job.

I'll still get certified, but I will pick up one or two of Scott's books too.

Personally, I don't think a degree in computer science is needed for tweaking your PC/running an online business, but it sure as hell can't hurt! Who knows, maybe you'll become adept enough to create/sell your own apps.

Well, I will understand all of the techie stuff that has to do with computers, including software development or programming, so I definitely want to obtain a BS in Computer Science.

You can be a troubleshooter without having a degree. A lot of successful people didn't have a degree.

I think running an effective profitable business either online or off has nothing to do with if you can use a computer or even touching one.

I say ditch the PC, spend your money on a Mac and go start a business.

"I will learn all there is to learn about computers in a formal educational setting..."

The trouble is, to do this you'd need to remain in formal education for life, because the market and technology are changing all the time.

If you really want to get the A+ then go for it, but just don't imagine that getting it is going to teach you everything you need to know.
