Can you spot a Pen Name?

I know some marketers use pen names, Frank Kern has his Dean Rankin, Eben Pagan is David DeAngelo, I was wondering if anyone knows of any others, or if anyone wants to admit using one? Is it working?

I actually have several dozen pen names for marketing and articles. There in as many niches for not only tracking, but also so people won't think I'm just a know-it-all.

      Ditto.

One of my pen names is "Hunter Waterhouse" -- business topics.

I have "Quinton Becker" in the automotive niche.

Another is "Lance Metzger" -- dating.

I have 4 pen names in the dating niche.

"Arlo Mooney" is the pen name that writes about the most cerebral topics of interest, at least until I figure out how to monetize my interest in physics.

In total, I have used about three dozen pen names.

Since getting shot down for writing about American History in my own name, because it was a distraction to those people who followed my business related topics, I have always changed pen names when I changed writing topics. I also use pen names to track where my articles are reproduced, by picking names that have a small Google footprint when I start using them.

*Edited- had to delete something that was showing up in Google*

I have used a couple pen names on articles- mainly when I write for a client and they ask me to upload. I did a lot of work with a big penny auction site and didn't really want my name associated with it.

If I'm releasing something personally- my motto is if I can't put my name on it I shouldn't sell it. Of course there could be many times when using a pen name would be appropriate however.

I'm thinking about using one for my new services. Mainly because I have a unique name and I want to separate my offline sales from my online sales.

I'm in 8 different niches, as an affiliate, and promoting my business with article marketing, niche sites and list-building ... so (like many) I have 8 different pen-names at the moment. This forum is one of very, very few places I use my real name.

If people could "spot" my pen-names, then they wouldn't be working at all.

Me, too! I've used pen names for over 20 years, sometimes multiple in a single niche. My reasons are:

        1. Privacy.
        2. So I won't look too obnoxiously like a know-it-all.
        3. Because a certain style of name can work better in certain niches.
        4. Because my real name (Eibhlin) is so confusing to people -- don't ask how many people think I'm male -- it's easier to use a more mainstream name.

("Eibhlin" is a old, Celtic version of "Eileen" and -- in the Irish language -- it's pronounced sort of like "Evelyn." I usually reference another Irish name, Siobhan for how the "bh" is pronounced. However, I say my own name the English way, like "Eileen.")

Though it's not my pen name, one of my favorite examples is Glenda Sanders. She's a great Harlequin romance novelist. Her real name? Glenda Sanders Kachelmeier.

Yep, choosing Glenda Sanders was a smart choice.
