I've hired a site programmer to fix issues I've had with my website in viewing in multiple internet browsers, and I was told it was going to be completed in only 3 days, now turned out to be 3 months of hell. I regret hiring him and and trusted him. All I asked him was fixed the browser compatibility, but I ended up discovering other messed up issues, glitches, and other things wrong with my website that wasn't there before.

Thank god I didn't hired him with the hourly wage, or else I would have been ripped up completely.

The problem I have realized with outsourcing is that to avoid the company outsource because all they're interested in is the money and not satisfying the customer as if with individual sole provider that also does the work.

3rd party only does the communication with you, and they have "their team" as they call it or they reoutsource it again so they're the 3rd party making the money, and don't want to help you satisfy all your needs.

How should I approach this from here?

I lost all my trust in him, but he has access to my site, phpadmin, FTP, wp-admin, and all my information.

Before you tell him he is fired, your best bet would be to change all passwords first. 3 months for a 3 day job is a long time, maybe hes just giving you the run around anyway.

I had to go through 5 crappy foreign outsource programmers to find 1 good one. I am still working with him to this day and for the past several years, but I had to go through a lot of time, money and frustration to find one that was worth building a long time business relationship with.

That is awful but not ALL companies are bad. You just need to make sure you hire someone with samples of work and references of some sort.

I agree.. change all passwords, change around any info you can then fire him.

If he still hasn't done the work, I'd suggest just firing him and doing a charge back on whatever you've paid him so far. It's not worth it to deal with people like that.

I have had horrible stories with phillipine workers. They do one day work then they must get up and go to the beach. LOL.

I have heard horrible stories in here to. So just goes to show you must test small scale and then build trust, if you are going to spend more money.

Oh my heavens Jason, in 3 months you could have taught yourself HTML, PHP, and Dreamweaver. Then corrected problems yourself. Okay, I exaggerate, but not by much.

Yeah, same experiences here. They act slow and give you the runaround for weeks. Of course they all are not like that but many seem to be.

Sorry to hear about your outsourcing nightmare, Jason!

Going through several workers to find one good one is par for the course, and is always part of the process, so expect it and no need to dwell on that part of it.

The key to avoiding frustration is to test out 5 or more (depending on how long term the project is) at ONE TIME with a small test task, this way you get it over at once instead of dragging it out over time and getting frustrated that the work's not getting done.

Jason, sounds like you really just had a small task, so not really long term. When you use sites like odesk for short term out tasking, the feedback scores and employer comments can go a long way towards weeding out the total losers from the gems.

Another issue, Jason, is why have you been putting up with that crap for 3 months?

For small tasks like this, go with an individual rather than a company.

If you're doing a project with multiple parts and skill sets required, going with a reputable company can take a load off your shoulders from the project management perspective, so it makes more sense. This approach is referred to as BPO (Business Process Outsourcing).

And yeah, change your passcodes and fire them!

      Good luck, Jason!

I've had a few of those too. As suggested cancel after you've changed your passwords. I have been using Odesk and just to be sure, I give the person a test task to make sure they do it in time and do it right.

With Odesk you can hire programmers without paying them an initial deposit and if you're unhappy you can cancel the contract. I've used this in only 1 case where there was no other alternative. But atleast, it gives you an option.

Definitely change your passwords. I have also had problems with someone I hired to design some graphics for me. I was looking on odesk at the time. There are some good programmers out there. You just need to find a good one. Ask for references. Ask to see some of his / her past work. Google their name plus forum to see if anyone else has had problems. If you put in the time and effort that it takes to weed out the bad ones, you will find one eventually. Once you find a good programmer, it's like finding gold. You can just go to him / her again and again. No offense to people from india, but I have heard more bad stories from people who have hired people from this country. People say good things about workers in the philippines. Also, you can look in this forum under the warriors for hire. There are some good programmers here too.

    Hope this helps;

    Brian.

I am sorry to hear about your current situation. I agree with everyone else and I would definitely change all pws before giving him the news

I know a very solid outsource firm that I used for my primary site which is listed in my sig. His rates are extremely reasonable and he is very accessible throughout the entire process. He delived my project in 7 days on a deadline of 7 days and I have been using him ever since. He works thru freelancer too so you can use the milestone system there for escrow as well.

Feel free to PM if you are interested and I would be happy to hook you guys up

He is from india and his english isn't 100% but if you speak to him in simple terms he understands 100% of what you want. He also provides some free help and service to you for other sites while your working together.

I am afraid this is just one of those situations where you just have to cut your losses and find somebody else.

You will waste your time if you try and get back at him and his company

      1. Change your passwords
2 Fire him and have no further contact with him
      3. Take up the suggestions of some of the Warriors on this thread and get the private recommendations which are being offered.

Think of yourself as now being a more savvy marketer which would at least be some benefit from this mess.

When you find a new site programmer be sure to set agreed milestones with them that are connected with their payment or a bonus.

So if they don't get xyz done by the agreed date then they won't get paid, or they'll miss out on a nice bonus payment for hitting that milestone.

This way you have more leverage over the situation so it won't run away so easily.

A few years back I had a similar experience with an outsourcing company. In the end I cut all ties, changed my password, and learned my lesson. The fact is that this one experience will help you become more effective in working with outsource companies in the future. Just do not swear them off.
