I've had at least three people in the last few days follow me on Twitter and when I clicked on their profiles found they are promoting something called Mammoth List, started by Brad Fallon. Now this isn't a big deal --I have survived worse, lol. But to me it shows the problem of using a particular method like that. I suspect somewhere on the program page it suggests that members start following lots of people on Twitter, hopefully to get sign-ups. But if everyone starts doing the same thing, you start getting repeat offers. I guess the same thing is true to some extent for mailing lists. If you are part of IM, you have to get used to a certain amount of redundancy. But to me, too many repeated offers dilutes the effectiveness. After all, I am only one person and could only join something, at most, once

Another annoying Twitter phenomenon - all of a sudden a couple of days ago, my Twitter page filled up with about 10 people posting the exact same message: quench your thirst for knowledge about water at such and such link....
I have no thirst for knowledge about water. I am completely uncurious about it. And that's a really dumb advertising technique which is likely to get those people unfollowed. |

I've avoided the Mammoth List stuff, but did experience the "quench your thirst for knowledge" incident.
It turns out that the mass-tweeting of that particular message stemmed from Guy Kawasaki's efforts to promote his AllTop site via Twitter. Many people signed up, sans inducement, to do a magpie-esque recitation of AllTop ads. Others signed up in exchange for a copy of Guy's book. If you want details about the whole thing: Stop Twitter Spam The Alltop Spam Issue I consider GK a very bright guy, but this particular effort really rubs me the wrong way, too. |

Thanks for explaining, I had NO idea what that was, other than some annoying blast of spam.
