Hi all

Im about to purchase a new domain and was wondering if theres any benefit or penalties for having 'blog' in the domain name??, e.g. exampleblog[dot]com but the website will not actually be hosted on a blog site (wordpress, blogger etc)

There are many ways of doing it. The most popular ones are the following:
    * Your Name for your Blog and a domain name for a product website, which would look like -> donjuan.com (blog), makemoneyonline.com (website).
    * DonJuan.com (blog), DonJuan.com/ProductName.
Personally I use my name for the blog and domain names for the websites.
There are no penalties in having a blog in the domain. The only problem is if you sell the domain there will be no more blog or vice versa.
    Does that help at all?

No need to have a blog in there, go after your keywords, that can benefit you.

    example:

    mykeywordblog[dot]com

as mykeyword[dot]com is taken i wondered if this would be the next best thing and if it would be beneficial?

There are no penalties in having blog in the domain. It may help provided you provide content, because the search engines love blogs as they offer content to their readers.
If you use the blog name just for the sake of of it it'll make no difference.

The only benefit would be if you were trying to rank for "keyword blog." Otherwise, there's no SEO benefit.

But if that's the only domain available, there's nothing wrong with it, either.

i guess the word "blog" would be a stopper, like a delimiter (dash, underscore, 'the', 'to', 'for', etc). there is no particular harm in that, but certainly no benefit. in fact it is believed that delimiters destroy value of the domain name.
being hosted on WP or blogger is not necessary for the site to be a blog.
usually it is easier to rank faster if you have WP installed and you actually run a blog on the site - the software does lots of internal SEO automatically for you, and google is known to like blogs. but everything depends on content quality of cause.

I think you should try finding another domain maybe without the word "blog", sort of like making a "brand" for yourself so people who will visit will know it's a blog anyway.

Blog I think is the same as using "site" or "website" or "journal"

If you can't get the shorter version of what you are looking for, I don't think you will be harmed by adding this word.

If the blog name lends itself to your website aims then it should be fine. For example if your niche is say sports related and you'll be posting advice or somehting on there it is in effect a blog type site.

If you are getting your keywords in the domain in this way it is having a phrase match domain. Alternative words to use after your keywords would be info, online, help, advice, reviews etc.

Having a phrase match domain is not as good as exact match domains, but then they are hard to come by nowadays.

As long as you actually take action that is the key. But have you checked .net and .org as well? Heck do yourself a favor and take your keyword and add different words to the end of it and see if they get decent traffic as well. Never hurts to have 1 more traffic source just by choosing the right domain name.

No, actually it's better to have the keywords only and only add another word if necessary to find a domain.

I think you are right--the word "blog" doesn't do anything for you except make the domain name longer, which isn't a good thing, IMO.
