What VPS should i get to host my domains?

Like the title says, what VPS should i get and where?
I really don't know much about all the VPS stuff, but i'm planning on having quite
a few domains and i will need hosting for all of them and i got told it would be easier and cheaper to use a VPS.

Thanks in advance!

VPS at hostgator is good for most uses.
if you are just starting out VPS could be an overkill, start with a much cheaper shared account. you will quickly understand what exactly you need from hosting.
Otherwise start with the lowest (cheapest) available VPS, you can scale up later smoothly without having to re-install anything. A limitation = cheapest VPS at hostgator do not have control panel, so you'll need to know how to admin the site without cpanel, or pay for cpanel separately.
depending on what kind of sites you plan to run it might be okay to run as many as you need on a shared account, or on the contrary, it might be no good to run too many on VPS.
general advise = start with the cheapest, upgrading later is no problem

I'm on a shared hosting account with about 40 different sites going on it. Some are just a few pages, some are testing grounds, but there is also quite a bit of video, and I stream some video in from Amazon.

I agree that getting a VPS out of the gate if you don't really have an idea of how big your sites are going to be may be overkill.

You can always start on a shared hosting plan, and if a site is doing "that well" that you are burdening the host you should be able to pay at that point to have it moved.

Start with a company called ScalaHosting Cheap Reseller Hosting, Affordable reseller hosting, Quality reseller hosting, Reseller program, Cpanel reseller hosting, Host reseller and get the cheapest reseller hosting @ $7 A reseller account is more flexible than shared hosting account as you can have a separate account for each domain

When your resources is getting higher they will upgrade you. I use them years until I need a VPS. At the time they didn't offer VPS and I use first used Liquidweb. I then after some hassles switched to Wiredtree as they offer more for the same price

I need a VPS as I want root access. Unless you need all the more advanced stuff on a server get a reseller account

For Wiredtree I give them 10/10

I started with a shared account at Hostgator and thought everything was good... until I moved to ServINT VPS only to realize I was indeed having problems at Hostgator that I didn't know about such as "throttling" your sites, depending on traffic, etc..... plus you have no way of know how many or what kind of sites are shared on the same server as your site(s).....

Not something I wanted to risk and wouldn't suggest it for someone serious about their business. Yes, it is cheap and a great "starter" plan for someone so they don't kill their bank account before they really know that IM is what they want, but if you you are serious, and have tons of traffic... moving up is necessary in my opinion.

I've had great success with wiredtree.com i tried 3 or 4 other suppliers but wiredtree beat them all in every way. I'm not affiliated in any way by the way!

I have been with servint about 7yrs have 2vps with them and have 3 others for my clients

Always first class support and service, you may get uber data transfer and storage from other hosts but for me first class service and support is what matters, I can go to sleep at night knowing my hosting is in good hands

I've been on WiredTree VPS today and their support is amazing, especially if you are new to the world of VPS hosting. They are on call virtually 24/7 to deal with your most "stupid" of questions.

That said, you definitely don't need a VPS straight away so something like Hostgator reselling accounts should be fine to start.

Both Wiredtree and Servint, as already mentioned, are great VPS hosts.

Keep in mind with a VPS there will be more tech work involved like setting up new accounts through WHM and assigning nameservers etc.

no.... it CAN be more tech work.... if you want. It gives you much more control over your server.

That said, with ServINT, you can still set up a main acct and use addons for that acct all through one cpanel. Personally, I don't do it this way, and have all my sites on different accounts, but it can still be done. Best thing (for me) about a VPS is the fact that you have access to the /root folder or /home... which is accessible from all sites on the server (i.e. if some universal file were placed there).

VPS solution is good solution for you; in addition, it offers a root/ admin access to your account. So you can install customized applications on your vps without any hassle. However, I would recommend you to check cloud hosting option as well. You can easily scale your account up or down according to your needs in cloud environment....

I recommend making sure your VPS is managed. So if you go with HostGator VPS do at least their Level 3 which is fully managed.

What do you need a VPS for and why do you need a VPS over a standard hosting account and not a dedicated server? I ask this because sometimes VPS is the right fit, sometimes it's a mallet when you need a tack hammer and sometimes its a bb gun when you need a canon.

Hostgator is a popular shared webhosting company, but it's not the best VPS company.
I currently use more than a dozen companies and in more than 10 years I learned a bit.

As other have said be sure you get a Fully Managed service, otherwise you will have problems in case you don't have good command line knowledge.

I've been using a company called Wiredtree. Had no problems with them at all and the customer support ir top notch, usually get back to in minutes!

It's a managed VPS so Wiredtree take care of all the technical stuff, and if you want to change something that you don't know how to do, they'll help you out.
