The best thing to do is look over at Flippa and see what types of sites are selling in that price range.

I think to sell a site for more than around $150 you must have income and typically sites sell for anywhere between 5-10X monthly revenue (many factors influence this such as the age of the blog, earnings record, how passive it is, where traffic comes from, future potential etc...)

So, I think the short answer to your question is a site that makes $50 - $100 a month would probably be what you are aiming for. Hold it for at least 6 months to prove earnings. I don't think the "kind" of site matters so much as the income but others might know of some different types of sites that sell for more with less income.

Just go to Flippa and click on Just Sold. Should give you a good idea of the kind of sites that sell and how much they sell for. Lee is right about traffic and revenue being the best sellers for sites. Without that, you're selling a startup and they don't get as much money.

A bit over a year ago, people were selling minisites with unique ebooks for around $1,000. And I don't mean plr ebooks or mrr ebooks ... ebooks that were written for the sites they were selling. The bottom fell out of that market almost as quickly as it started... at least at that price range.

So your best bet is to promote the sites and get some traffic and revenue going before listing them.

I've had recent success on Flippa by creating WordPress sites on topical content (see google trends) blasting out some content and comments to get a quick listing. All of this within about an hour and then write a short accompanying article for the sales page saying how people might make money with the site. CPA style marketers seem to buy these out for $150-$300 and they take a lot less work than the standard flipping site. Obviously not a solid business model but great every now and then when you notice a story or trend that will likely stay for a while or attract a tech savvy audience.

@daniel Do you bother to get them to rank for those keywords?

No, Chardee, I don't. I just want them to make around $100/month so that I can sell them around $500-$600 easily on Flippa or at WF.

If they aren't going to rank, how will they be found and make any $? I'm confused.

Its not necessary that to make money a website need to be found in SE. You get traffic from a lot of sources like article marketing, videos, PRs, Forum posting etc.

All those things you mentioned create content and end up sending good links to your site, why would you do all the hard work and then let someone else take over before your site starts to take off (climbing the serps)?

If this is what you're doing, raise your expectations ($1000-$3000 selling point) because serps will follow. If you can "socially" drive the traffic to make $50/m ... hold put, when serps kick in that number will grow to $150/m

Yes, basically everything was covered above: Go to Flippa, search recently sold and study what you find.

I agree, if you sell a site that makes real money on an ongoing basis for as much as you would make in a few months, then you're ripping yourself off. If you use temporary traffic to show data that results in a sale, then you are ripping them off. Apparently People will buy a site with nothing on it, if it looks good, has a good domain name, and is set up well. I saw a video which said you could set up one of these in an hour, and sell it for fifty to a hundred bucks.

So you people want to say that if I want to earn $500 for a site, then I don't need to do any SEO work. I should only design the site and sell it?

No, if you just design the site and sell it you won't get that much. Probably get around $100 depending on what your design looks like. In order to make $500 you will have to get the site earning which involves getting traffic which likely means you will have to do SEO.

Go to cbengine.com and check just removed clickbank sites, ask the owners if they are willing to sell this site. These sites are not making any money for them so you can buy them for couple hundred bucks and market with new sales copy and marketing, then flip for 5x

We regularly build sites, get them earning, and then sell them on Flippa. Check our signature for our website where we detail the process we use, revenue we earn, etc...you can also check out one of our current auctions.

There are two strategies for these types of sites:

    1. Pre-earnings. The market is flooded with sites like this because it's much easier to create a site, but much harder to get them ranked and earning. You'll see many auto-blogs and/or cookie cutter sites like this and they regularly go for $50-$200. Again though, you'll be competing with a ton of people that don't really know how to monetize.

    2. Post-earnings. Get the website up, ranked, and getting traffic for the keywords you're targeting. Use whatever monetization method you want, but make sure you have at least 3 months earnings and can verify everything. Make sure you use verified Google Analytics and go OVERBOARD in supplying data to review. We use this method and there's less competition for earning sites. We regularly get 20x+ revenue on our auctions, but we're on the high end.

    Good luck!

I have actually use successful just sold sites on flippa to sell my sites before.

Look how they write their sales copy and how they advertise their site. There are little tidbits in there to help when it comes to sell your site.

I belive the more you tell the more you sell. It is cliche I know but there is a lot of truth to that.

Here are a couple things you can do to get a site sold for $500.
1.) Get it earning about $50 in the 30 days before the auction.
2.) Buy a PR4+ domain, add unique content, and sell it.
3.) Build an site ranking with exact match domain for a keyword that's getting some traffic.
4.) Build a site with an email list of around 500 people.

There are tons of other ways to make $500+ selling on flippa. Good luck!
