Hey all

question about RSS... if someone has a goal to earn a) lots of pageviews and b) advertisers (versus product sales) would RSS be better to worry about than email?

What I also don't get is does RSS count toward stats? like i notice a lot of tip posts about RSS being better for pageviews but if they read it in their feedreader then isn't it NOT being counted?

    Email gets to the reader faster. It will definitely show up in their inbox, or spam. The RSS feed they might miss or for example if it's a Yahoo RSS and they don't go to Yahoo, they'll never see it. You also don't want to send an email each time you write a new post. Experiment. I'd say offer a newsletter, RSS, and Facebook. Let readers know when new content is up, and if they're interested, they'll come.

      I quoted the above because its sound advice; esp. the emphasized portion.

      Just keep in mind; (and this is not JUST with RSS -- but an overall strategy); in the brick & mortar world, (one of) the golden rule(s) has always been location, location, location.

      On the Internet; you wanna translate that to distribution, distribution, distribution.

      RSS is only "one" distribution channel; (albeit it be a very good one); in what should be your arsenal of getting the word out about your business.

    I'd say that RSS is important for search engine discovery, but email is better for driving immediate traffic.

    RSS is only "one" distribution channel but it plays a significant role in Search Engine Optimization. Should never be ignored.

      Although rss is important, email still has much bigger audience than rss. Your message will not reach to very one if you are using rss only

    RSS can extend you reach, increase backlinks and may find people beyond your circle. Keep in mind you do not to choose between email and RSS, you can easily support both!

      I am no expert on RSS, but sounds like you might be confused between using RSS as a form of submitting to directores for backlinks, and the Feedburner RSS subscription to receive updates via email:

      2 ways of using RSS include:

      1) Submitting it to RSS directories for backlinks.

      2) Updating people with new blog posts

      So if you just want search engine traffic then you can submit the RSS feed to lots of different RSS directories to help spread your backlinks (these feeds are then automatically updated when you make a new post so you don't need to resubmit).

      It will also help get Google coming crawling your site more quickly for new content.

      Number 2) is more delivering your latest blog posts to subscribers via email (or being updated on their RSS reader).

      You can use Feedburner for this. This is if you have a site where people are interested in the content and want to receive all new posts. They can just subscribe to your feed and receive them via email rather than having to keep checking back.

      So the RSS count, is the feedburner count for the number of subscribers that want to receive updates via email. That part of things does not do anything for SEO.

      But you can still put in an advertising banner as part of the template you use to deliver the updates via email.
