Help needed with my first project : An online directory.

Hey Guys,

Just spotted a niche in the online directory's. Their are competitors but I think I can get an edge.

Problem Is this is the first thing I'm about to dive into, probably buy my domain today and look for hosting and learn about wordpress today.

I'm strugging to find any guides or articles on starting your own directory.

Any advice that you can think of would be great, i literally need to think of all angles, anybody's $0.02 is welcomed.

        It would be a link directory, a directory of businesses that are in a certain niche that i think that can perform well for me.

        Contacting businesses and asking them would they be interested in having their link/banner on my site. To promote that they offer a certain service (the niche) for a fee once a year.

    Hey, I'm actually in the same niche (business directory).
    I just opened my site for Restaurants in Medford (Check my sig.) , Pm me and I can walk you through how to create something like that. You'd have to buy a script which is not expensive, but it worth every penny

      That's great. I also have a plan to create a local business directory. As of the moment, there's only one website that can compete with me, but it's rarely updated.

      Maybe if you add content to your site, it would rank in Google for certain keywords. I don't know if a purely link directory would rank well.

      Unfortunatley I'm able to send a PM. real pain in the @ss for a newbie but i understand why they do it.

      You maybe my blessing in disguise I'd love you to help me with the basics. I'm a listener and a hard worker and will use the knowledge wisley.

      I wasnt sure wether to charge or provide free and earn money from other sources? I was also worried about a seo friendly domain and ranking well in seo.

      I've an idea what a script is but not 100% how much do they set you back?

    Well, I actually run a few classifieds sites. Also, working on creating a program / service to help people create their own classifieds / business directory sites and make profit with them.
    Script actually won't set you back at all. With the script that I provide you get professional design, payment gateways, you can set up advertising packages, or charge per category.         we are just starting out with bldg the directory. We are looking to use WP. I'm trying to decide which them to use. I have some ideas from a previous post.

        Can you offer any suggestions on how to get more businesses to sign up to your directory? Do you send them e-mails, make phone calls, etc?

    I have built a lot of directories using Joomla and extensions like Mosets tree or Sobi2(free).... tons of options... But this is the easy part... getting people and links is the hard part... do your homework on that part of the equation.
