When Do You Make The Decision To Opt-In To Someone's List?

by tpw
20 replies
When you buy a WSO or another offer, as marketers, we instinctively understand that the marketer will want to add us to his/her mailing list.

But when do you make that decision?

I have included a POLL with the 4 possible answers:
  1. I always subscribe to the list, when I buy someone's product;
  2. I subscribe immediately after I buy;
  3. I read the product first, before making my decision. Quality matters;
  4. I never opt-in to anyone's list.

Now, I understand that even with these four responses, there are some gray areas, but please pick the one that most closely represents your behavior.

And please share with us your thoughts on your answer.

      I subscribe "pretty often". I'm selective enough about what I buy for that to be more or less the same as "I read the product first - quality matters". If the product was "kind of what I expected", I tend to subscribe, anyway: it doesn't hurt to see what people are sending out, and what they're up to. I can always learn something and can always unsubscribe later.

    I subscribe to as many lists as I can.

    I then watch their methods play out in my inbox.

    If the offers they send are low quality then I un-sub.

    If they only try and hard sell with no added value then I un-sub.

    Some lists will teach you alot just by monitoring the patterns they are using to send their emails, subjust lines used and the offers included.

    Just My opinion....

    If you don't subscribe you could miss out on some good stuff, if you do and the list isn't a fit for you or your business you can ALWAYS un-sub.

    If it is a plugin that may need updates or the maker has said it is getting some additional things added then yes, I trysign up immediately (if I see something) so I can just get it out of my head.

    If it is something else, I like to go through the product first.

    In general my course follows the later path. If what they sold me stinks I don't bother getting on a list.

    Hey Bill

    I always subscribes to the list when I buy something. Always good to learn and find out what other marketers have to offer.

    Cheers,

    If they make me confirm I don't opt-in...

    If I don't have to confirm, then I will stick around until they stop providing value...

    These days I don't have time to be on a bunch of lists nor desire to be... although I love spying on others so if they don't make it "hard work" for me (I know, I'm lazy ) then I will see how they do things...

      LOL, Dani, Simon, Coby! I am a rather prolific buyer and subscriber of WSOs as well as dozens of other niches. Much more can be learned not from any of the products themselves necessarily, but rather as a lifetime student of marketing style.

    I am very selective of the lists that I subscribe to. When I first started out a few years ago I subscribed to everything on my main email and I was up to like 500+ a day. It was ridculous (that email has been abandoned for months and I'm sure the inbox is beyond full).

    If it's something like software or a template that will be updated, I subscribe. If not, I don't subscribe. I actually don't want to be on a list just because I bought something.

    If the updated product list starts sending offer after offer, I unsubscribe from that too. There's only a few lists that I stay on long term.

      Earlier this month I subscribed to somebody's list here using a unique name.

      Today I see I've got 8 IM spams that are from people who never spammed me before.

      Guess which name I'm being addressed by...(that's a rhetorical question btw there Mr. Platt )

      The nerve of some folks...

    I'm pretty selective about the lists I am on. Sometimes I do subscribe to see how they market, other times it's because i like what they have to say.

    There are a few people whose lists I had to seek out to get on them - I wasn't buying their product but I respected them from their forum posts and wanted to hear more about what they had to say.

      I used to subscribe to almost any list - until I started my own business and my own list...
      Then I started to understand things can be automated to a ridiculous level - since then I try not to do that - I try to personalize my list as much as I can and I always but always Over Deliver - so in that term I would sing up for my list.
      As a side note - I'm currently opted in on about 50 or so lists - that's a lot to keep up with - especially the ones that mail daily - or even more than once a day...

        Yeah I usually subscribe to the list after I buy a product.

        And stick around for a bit to see what happens. If I get promoted other products via affiliate links then I might unsubscribe pretty quickly..

        But am keen to hear about future products that the product creator may have to offer that they have actually created themself, rather than being promoted affiliate offers to.

        I also tend to stick around more if I actually pay for the product than if I get a free eBook.

        I often unsubscribe pretty soon after getting a free eBook but feel more of a connection to stick around if I have paid money for something.

    What ticks me off is when I am FORCED to join a list when I buy a product to get my access key or assistance or whatever. I will join your list IF and WHEN I like you and find you offer me value.

      I don't mind that as long as they've told me before I pay that I have to opt in and that product-delivery depends on it (which is very easy for them to do, of course). Otherwise I agree with you, and they're schmeckels, too ... and risking their PayPal accounts (not that I'll complain to PayPal, but someone else might, and it takes only one complaint for that, to lose your PayPal account).
