Need some quick advice

I recently discovered an ok niche that I want to experiment with. I don't care how well my website does, I just want to gain some experience.

My questions are, where should I buy the domain name? Most people I talk to recommend namecheap.com

For my hosting I want to use hostgator because I always hear positive feedback. Will I be able to transfer my domain from namecheap to hostgator? How do I do that? And lastly, Is there a fee for doing that?

Thanks

First, register your domain wherever you want. I use Godaddy because I like the interface for managing multiple domains.

Second, wherever you host once you create the site there it will tell you the DNS servers for that site. ns1.examplenameser.com and ns2.examplenameserver.com

Third, go back to wherever you registered your domains and find where it asks you to set nameservers, or manage DNS, or something along those lines and input the nameservers you received from your hosting company.

If you register a domain with the hosting company you go with all this process will be much more automated.

    Hope that helps,
    Fred

I've read some horror stories around GoDaddy lately, and it was here on WF as I remember. So you may want to make a "site:" search in Google.
    I use NameCheap and HostGator.

Oh my god please don't EVER use GoDaddy. Just search on this forum for them and you'll see pleanty of reason to use a different registrar. I suggest you follow the advice you already got and use namecheap.

For hosting I use resellerzoom. A reseller account is like 10$ a month and you can create a new account for each domain you register. That makes it a lot easier if you ever decide to sell the site off down the road.

Also, you don't actually transfer your domain from namecheap to resellerzoom. You just point the domain name servers to your host. The registrar (namecheap) and the host (resellerzoom) are two separate entities and have different functions.

      I love GoDaddy.

Look, all registrars will have positive and negative reviews.

You need to figure out for yourself who you want.

What ever you do, just keep where you register your domain separate from your hosting.

You will be able to transfer your domain, to hostgator, and its free to do that. You only have to pay for the hostingplan at hostgator (unless you´ve already have one)

All you have to do is change the nameservers (NS1 & 2), with your registrar to your hostgator nameservers (you get this info in the email following your account creation at hostgator.

could bou the domain through hostgator, if you want, because they are also registrars

Why buy reseller hosting and pay $19 / month? Just buy a regular hosting and use addon domains.... and pay under $4 / month ....
I suggest using Just host (Link is in my sig.) I host over 10 web sites with them with one hosting account and paying $3.95 / month ... unlimited hosting. You also get free traffic kit (facebook credits, adwords, yahoo etc.)

idk about just host... but I have tried some of the cheaper hosting companies and they typically tend to fail when your website start to get decent traffic. Especially if you have video or any type of media. I found media temple and have never had an issue with loading time or uptime ever since so I tend to stick with them. I guess it just depends on how much traffic you have going to the site

I have 3 classifieds web sites, 2 social networking sites, one online store and a blog set up with them. They've been ranked #1 in 2011. In my opinion they are much better the hostgator.

I go for namecheap as there`s always a 1 year free whois privacy package included to any domain order.

Also, there are tons of coupons available to save $. And yes, it`s very easy point your domain to hostgator. All you need to do is copy and paste the hostgator nameservers into the namecheap dns settings of the domain.

Namecheap is great and I cannot recommend them enough.

There is no need to transfer your domain to HostGator. Registering a domain and hosting are two different things. You can register and host with two different places.

All you will need to do is point the nameservers at your registrar to your hosting account nameservers.

I use godaddy for domains. I like hostgator for hosting due to their excellent (IMO) customer service. I would not however host where my domain is. If for whatever reason I wanna change hosting and I paid for the domain and hosting as a package like 1and1 offers, I'm screwed.

Stay in control and choose wisely where you host and who you buy your domain from.

If you go with godaddy, use code fan3 to get a domain for less than $8 versus the ridiculous $12 and some change you're otherwise charged.

I've also used NameCheap and Hostgator, it's a good combo. I also accidently signed up for the wrong hosting package and they put me onto the correct price plan and recredited my money back to my bank account without any hassle! Great customer service there.

I use godaddy and namecheap. I like godaddy because it's easy to see and navigate the domain manager control panel. They always have some kind of promotion going on. Coupons are easy to find.

Once purchased, change the DNS (nameserver) to the hosting server of your choice, which in your case is hostgator. It should look something like
    • ns1.hostgator.com
    • ns2.hostgator.com
There will be no fee for doing this.

You are right, namecheap is the way to go as for buying a domain. Once you have a hosting account at Hostgator, you'll need to simply get Hostgators DNS addresses, and then go in your namecheap account and add them in.

I'm not with Hostgator, but its the same procedure with any DNS update. The DNS update is required to be done if you want your domain added to your Hostgator account.

As for namecheap, the procedure is simple. Log in your namecheap account. Go under Domain Tab and then Manage Domains. Then click your domain on the right side. On the left side menu, you'll see where you can add your DNS (nameserver), theres only 1 option if I recall where you can add the 2 DNS addresses

    • ns1.hostgator.com
    • ns2.hostgator.com

    , and then Save changes.
