Is this Spam? Somebody wants to buy my blog?

I started an affliliate marketing website as a bit for a test site a while back, it is an Amazon afflite site which does product reviews. It never really got off the ground, only made a few sales, I moved on to other bigger and better things. That being said it is a very nice looking website with some (not very much) good content on it, and could function as a great aflliate site if someone put some time into it.

I recieve spam comments on it just like any blog, but a comment I recieved today stuck out to me.

This is the comment:

"Hey, my name is jake from WebAcquisitionsUnited. We’re interested in buying your blog, would you sell for $3,000? Please contact me asap so that we can arrange it at BigBloggerJake (@) gmail.com"

The url listed with the comment was google.com, so not the standard spam URL post. I searched for WebAcquisitionsUnited and found nothing.

What should I think of this? Is this spam? Or is there some chance that somebody actually wants to buy it....?

That would be spam my friend!

If you are interested in selling your website you should scout the websites where you can post them up for sale and figure out how much your website is worth. Flippa, and forums.digitalpoint are really simple to use.

        Hi *****,

Thank you for getting back to me so fast. Just a brief introduction, I'm the site acquisitions manager and I'm responsible for finding any potential blogs that are in our area of expertise. Yes, this is a serious offer ($3000 cash) so we had a few questions, primarily:

        1. How long have you had the blog?
        2. Are you generating any income from it?
        3. Have you received any additional offers to it?

We pay via bank wire, check or paypal and so far your site looks really good. If possible we would like to close this deal within the next few days. Please stay in touch.

        Sincerely,

        Jake

I'd be very wary of this. They are operating under a company name, but there is no evidence that such a company actually exists? It very well could be a scam, where they tell you they will put the money into one of their "trusted escrow services". They send you to a real enough looking site, you transfer ownership and find the money and the escrow service were not real.

    I wouldn't risk it.

Sounds intersting haha, I think I will act as a interested buyer until the point where any "real" information and or money needs to exchange hands to see what how thier scam exactly works.

It always is interesting to me how people try and scam...

the gmail account alone screams spam.

A google search for "BigBloggerJake (@) gmail.com" confirms it.

The fact that they offered the price upfront in a blog comment is suspicious to me.

I found the same comment on one of my affiliate website. I was shocked to see it how come someone was offering me $3000 straight away for a small website.

My website is ranking high on the search engine. I think he is targeting websites with high rankings.

It doesn't sound legitimate to me it may be a way to get you on their list or just respond to send you an offer. I know there is a craigslist scam where people want to send you money for a service but they are fake checks and then they ask for a refund.

Annoying! I got the email as well, I thought I was going to get some cash but then I saw this post!
As far as a scam it must be either escrow service scam or maybe just trying to get a database on people who read comments, or maybe just a list of people who own websites. Anyway I regret having replied now but Aksimet plugin should keep me safe (I might have to update my email spam filters as well now!)

There isn't a URL in the comment, only a mailto:bigbloggerjake@gmail.com. So I assume he's harvesting the email addresses of those hapless enough to reply.

I might respond to it with a throwaway address just to find out what the scam is.

someone wanting to buy a website most likely isn't going to leave a post comment anyway. On my small "niche" sites, I'm even leery of things that come through the contact form. Usually, someone is smart enough to find you .... whether that is through privacy/whois/whatever if they are serious about buying.

This seems to be spam. There is a trick to find out Spam messages & comments. Copy a part/sentence of the message and enter it for Google search.... if you find too many similar results for that comment then it is something which is fake & unreal.

I did same with your comment... When I use a part of it for Google search it shows up dozens of results for exactly the same piece of text, so its spam... ignore it!!

I also got the same message on my blog.

What made me suspicious was that I'd had the blog up for a mere week when this "offer" came through. There's NO way that the site could be valued at that much since I'm in the process of tweaking the design before launch. Like everyone else, I checked Google to see if this guy had been posting all over the place.

I wonder if this is some sort of overpayment scam. I didn't have time to play "response-footsie" with the guy, and the fact that in the response email he asks for your blog name suggests that he's using some sort of blog-crawling script.

      I'm not biting.
