Killing off Websites....

I work for a big internet company that has several different website properties. These sites have all shared content over the years and cannibalize rankings from each other.

The bosses want to start consolidating some of the smaller sites. But how do I know which ones to start with? And yes we will be using 301 redirects to pass rank along.

So far I have pulled data from
Google Analytics
Backlinks Counts
Alexa Rankings
Indexed pages

so which one do I pick? Are there any other metrics I need to look into?

Start with the ones with the longest tail keywords. They are probably crap to begin with.

Actually long Tailed keywords are Gold my friend. But I have taken into account the amount of organic keywords each site gets.

Have you considered just moving most of the content off the sites onto the main one(s) and then using the domains to build a network for backlinks?

      This.

Don't destroy them, just consolidate them into a backlink phenomenon. One that YOU own and can be rest assured your posts will be indexed on. You already have the investment made (domain names, hosting, etc) so it really just comes down to re-populating them with quality original content.

It works, and it works damn well. I do this for the company I work for. Completely controlled by us and it is very effective from an SEO standpoint.

You're going to fail. If you're afraid of failure then you do not belong in the Internet Marketing Business. Period.
