Snagging an Expiring Domain

Hi All,
I noticed a domain that I am interested in is set to expire in a couple weeks. I can't afford to pay the high prices these domain dealers want, but if this one should become available what is my best bet for snagging it? Do I have to just sit at my PC and wait until midnight and then if it expires go for it? Anyone have any ideas? Thanks!
Doug

    Nope.

After it expires, they will still a chance to renew it. This length of time may vary by registrar. 10-30 days or so.

After that, it goes into a redemption period, during which the previous owner may get the domain back for a higher fee. This is another period of time.

After that, the registrar may decide to keep it and auction it if it might be a particularly valuable domain.

The bottom line is that you will probably be waiting several months before (and if) it is available again. You could try place a backorder on the domain with various sites that will try to grab the domain as soon as it drops.

Wow...I didn't realize there was such a long process for it to free up! Good to know. Okay, I guess I have more than a couple of weeks to figure out my next step. I'll start doing some research on finding a company that can snag it for me. Thanks Dan! I learned something new today!

As said, the registrar gives a certain amount of days AFTER it expires to still get it. Then you can grab it. Check out this expired domain checker though. thebigventure.com/affiliate-marketing/neat-little-tool/

There is actually a technology to it how to snatch up expired domains. Do a search here and you'll find it.

make sure you backorder it and check snapnames later if he doesn't renew but I think backorder will do the job if its not a premium.

Go Daddy has a good back order and is less expensive but if you want to pretty much guarantee it then use snapnames or name jet. I think there is also a monthly service that you can use ongoing if you need to do that is domanface- check it out.

If it's a desirable name (not just for you) there's a chance one of the drop catchers like namejet, snapnames, employing large computer systems in order to catch a domain the first milliseconds it becomes available, there;s no beating them if they are on the lookout for it, as I recall to buy one of these dropped domains you may have to make a bid to a blind auction starting at $60.

If you look at the WHOIS info and see "pending delete", it will become available in exactly 5 days. There may be others waiting for this moment too, so the safest bet is to use NameJet.com to snag it for you. No guarantees, but your chances will be much better.

Yes Namejet works great but I would also backorder an expiring domain at pool.com and snapnames.com

No worries - the backorder itself is for free you only pay when you really get the domain.

I have used GoDaddy to capture many expired domains over the past 6-7 years and unless they have changed the rules for new customers (which I doubt) you will not lose your money - HOWEVER - you do not get it refunded - they keep it on account as a backorder credit which you may use on a future expiring domain.

Also, something referred to in other replies regarding the length of time a registrar allows a domain owner the chance to renew - in almost 100% of the domains I have captured the period of time after the expire date to the date the domain actually became available was a minimum of 30 days to 45 days after the expire date.
