Ebook Without Clickbank/Plimus (site example)

Hey Warrior Forums,

I'm looking to dip my toe into the 'product creation' side of things but I'm wondering if I can do it without the upfront cost and work to getting it setup with a payment processor like Clickbank.

I stumbled into this site for example:

How To Become Anorexic

I'm not spamming the link for traffic or anything. Firstly, it's not my site and secondly if I was going to promote this site there would be far better places to do it than in an IM forum. But the way they've done it is interesting to me. It's not a Clickbank affiliate link, it's just a paypal button.

Does Paypal actually allow this kind of thing? Do I need to go for a business account with them or something or is it as simple as slapping on a wordpress paypal plugin and giving the download link after payment?

Really appreciate any advice on this - feel free to drop your WSO link if you have one covering selling your own niche products through paypal or something similar. I'm not looking for big IM product launches, just something to sell on a few of my niche blogs.

Cheers,
Monopoly

I think you need to have either a merchant or business account in order to create a paypal button to sell something, but yes it is allowed.

To do it (if you have the proper account)

    1. Log in
    2. Click on the button near the top left of the page labeled "merchant services"
    3. Under create buttons Click "Buy Now" 2nd from the top
    4. Fill out form with item name, Price, Tax (if applicable), and item ID (a custom code for item tracking)
    5. fill in other applicable info like product download page and such
    6. get code and set it up on your site.

There's a video at youtu(dot)be/9vSUWZFkrbw about it, The videos a little out of date since Paypal has upgraded their design since it was made but it gives the basics

If you are thinking about using PayPal then you should consider using e-junkie too. It will save you TONS of aggravation.

Thanks Curtus, I'm taking a look at it now.

The 'Website payments standard' doesn't charge a startup or monthly fee, just takes a cut from each sale. That sounds like a good way to start and I can always upgrade if it works out.

Looking forward to designing my own product for a change now.

/edit: And thanks for the suggestion Rich, I've heard some horror stories about paypal and since that's where my CPA payments go at the moment it might not be such a bad idea to keep that separate.

The advantage I do like about using paypal is it would probably be familiar to people which would help conversions. Then again is a few extra sales really worth becoming one of the horror stories I hear about.

I have to admit that I have used paypal buttons in the past, and i even prefer it to the clickbank checkout. That being said I would only really recommend someone using the paypal transaction terminal for really niche products and products that are not going to sell immediately or too a very large audience fast.

      Reasons:

I have heard some horror stories about people getting a flood of conversions, making hundreds or thousands of dollars in a week; Then getting shut down by the paypal people because of suspect account activity. Its really hard to get your account and money reinstated after that happens.

I also understand that the paypal system slows down (alot if their are multiple purchases on the same account within a short time period).

I say I have heard because I've never had to worry about selling thousands of dollars in a year let alone a week.

That being said; The paypal system is great for newbies and those people not ready to step into the bigtime with all the clickbank Guru's. And like you said it is recognizable.

Too many Paypal disputes will get your account suspended or banned. That's why many use Clickbank or Plimus

And while I'm promoting outside of the IM niche and I plan on making good quality content, thats quite a risk to run. I'll maybe start with e junkie or that free affiliate suggestion and move to Clickbank if it works out.

I've got two computer game sites making a little with CPA but getting about 2500 uniques a day between them. I'm going to try and iframe a video sales and buy button in front of that and see how it goes.

Thanks for the suggestions everyone, really looking forward to having a go at making my own product for a change.
