Interesting difference in Yahoo search traffic
I have a very large website that ranked for a short period of time at the top of the Google search results and brought in many sales each day. Then one day I got the big old slap. This site is high quality, well structured, plenty of unique content and lots of back links, but for whatever reason Google doesn't like it very much.
For the past year Google has teased me with the so called "yo-yo effect" where my site will appear on page 1 at the top for about a day, then drop to the bottom every so many days. This process has repeatedly randomly for a long time, so I just quit wasting my energy on it.
Now, Yahoo has rewarded it with many page 1 rankings for several keyword variations.
Here's the interesting thing though...
Now the traffic has been between 250 - 300 hits a day!
My hop count is about 200 - 250 a day.
Since the site started doing so well about a week ago, I have sent about 1,500 hops to a product, but only have made 3 sales.
When the site would appear briefly on Google for a few hours out of the day I would get 2 - 4 sales, just for a few hours.
I have changed almost nothing on this site to interfere with the conversion rate on my end, or at least the presell process.
It's just interesting the difference. This has been something that I have had some trouble with in the past.
1. Get the traffic but no sales.
2. Make some changes for sales but risk losing rankings.
In the case of this site I've done nothing to affect either.
Anyone else have any interesting situations that have been similar in the past?
It seems to be the nature of this business sometimes.
