Free Opt-In eBook - How good should it really be?

Hello Warriors,

I'm in the process of starting a list in a popular mental health self-help niche. I've realised that I need to offer a freebie for people to download as an incentive to join my list. The creation of a free ebook is not a problem for me as I like writing and I know I can make an excellent one that will appeal to many people.

However, the nagging question I have is how good should this freebie ebook be? If I write a winning ebook on this self help subject (of which I have personal experience), then is it likely that those who subscribe will be less prone to buying the affiliate (digital) products that I advise them to purchase later on? After all, I would have given them a goldmine of info already.

If, on the other hand, I wrote just a bare bones free ebook (10-15 pages), would that lead to people unsubscribing through disappointment?

Plus, in self-help niches, how important/attractive is a personal story in a free ebook? For example "My ..... Story & Ways I Overcame It".

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

It must be good enough for people to trust you as an expert but you can't give them the entire solution to their problems as you still want to make some sales with other products you pitch.

A personal story is nice and you can even pitch a product in it.

To find some middle ground seems sensible then.

Is it wise to pitch a product so soon?

      Yes, this!!!

Here what I've done. Try to write down in a single sentence just what your readers are looking for (and what they will get from your product you are promoting). Then... write all about that sentence. You can tell them why they should look for that sentence, how it can benefit them, but make sure not to give away that specific info.

      Hope that makes sense.

You're thinking about the free e-book in relation to the product you're promoting.

If you'll excuse the observation, what you should be doing is thinking about it in relation to the email series you're going to send them.

Their perception of the "free report" in relation to the product is going to be ill-informed anyway, clearly, by definition, because they haven't yet seen the product. Just be aware that the primary purpose of the free e-book is to make them open and read your subsequent emails.

You want to be crafting the whole "sales funnel" together. The free report, the email series, the sales page are all part of it.

The report should give good information, and leave them wanting more.

Your prospect should have a number of thoughts in their head after reading the report:

this guy really knows his stuff
    I want to know more
if this info is free how brilliant will the paid for stuff be
I can't wait for the next email
I want to know more about the paid book

You might want to look at this WSO:

    Hope that helps

Thanks all for the advice! Much appreciated.

Nicola, I decided to buy the ebook you suggested after checking reviews elsewhere on the Warriorforum. Will keep me busy for the rest of the day.

      Thank you for the link.
