Buying a Domain and Transferring it?

Can anyone give me a step by step on how this is done? I usually bu domains from my hosting service but I've just recently noticed that they charge more than other services like Godaddy, at $12.99/ .com, .net, .org site and even .info extensions.

It's certainly sensible to keep your domain registrar and hosting company separate. Transferring your domain is a straightforward matter.

First, get your host's nameserver (or DNS) information. If you don't already have this info (it's usually in the welcome email), just ask them. The details will typically look something like: ns1.somename.com, ns2.somename.com where "somename" is replaced by your host's server name.

Then, when you register a domain name, for example through Namecheap, just look in your "Manage Domain Names" option and you'll see something like "Set Domain Nameservers" - the actual wording might vary depending on the registrar, but they'll all have a variation of "Name Servers", "Nameservers" or "DNS" in the option.

All you do then is change the details of the nameservers from your registrar's to the ones you received from your host - you'll usually just need to put in the first two nameservers.

And that's it. You may have to wait up to 48 hours for the changes to take effect, but they'll probably update within a day or so.

I am not sure if what Frank said is what you are looking for. As far as I understand, you are looking to transfer your domain from your hosting provider to an independent registrar like Godaddy or Namecheap. What you need to do is -

Go to Domain Names, Web Hosting and SSL Certificates - Go Daddy (although I recommend namecheap)
In the homepage, you will see a box where it says - Transfer your domain to us.

Type your domain name there and click transfer.

Go through the checkout process, make the payment, etc.

After that, namecheap will ask you for an auth code to authenticate the transfer.

Contact your hosting provider and ask them for an auth code.

Copy and paste the auth code inide your namecheap account, under the transferring domain.

Wait for 3-5 days for the transfer to take place.

Hope that helps. Also forgive me if this not what you are looking for.

You might be right - although the heading says "Buying a Domain and Transferring it"

Anyway, I think between us, we've covered the bases.

Thanks a lot Frank and Next6, but Frank was actually found what I was looking for. I want to register a domain name Godaddy/NameCheap and use it through my hosting service. Thanks to both of you though.

If the domains are registered in your name, there should be no problem transferring them away to ANY registrar.

I'm using NameCheap to buy my domains now but it takes 60 days to be allowed to transfer domains! Is this normal?

Yes, that's normal for domains not to be transferred to another registrar within 60 days. That is implemented by ICANN (Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers). However, you can still push it to another NameCheap account during those 60 days, you just can't transfer it out to another registrar.

However, there's no need to transfer anything if you just want to register the domain at NameCheap and host it somewhere. You would just go into NameCheap and set the dns name servers for your hosting provider. What exactly are you trying to do here? You stated:

"I want to register a domain name Godaddy/NameCheap and use it through my hosting service."

But then you state you want to transfer it?? There's no need to transfer it if all you're wanting to do is register the domain name and host it with a hosting provider. You would only transfer it if you wanted to transfer to another registrar.

It can take up to 72 hours for the name servers to propagate fully. What kind of hosting do you have? Visit your domain name and you'll see when it's propagated. You check to see if it's propagated by going to your cpanel, which is done by visiting http://yourdomain.com:2082 and typing in your user name and password that was provided by your host. However, while the site may be showing for you, it may not be fully propagated worldwide yet as can take up to 72 hours....
