Out-of-home office will increase money?

I was reading an article about how those who work online (from home) but outside of the home makes substantially more than those working online while inside of the home. (Hope I didn't confuse you)

They say they are more focused, feel more professional, and managed their time better.

I'm seriously thinking about renting a small, one room office space. Even though I have a home office I still feel like I'm having a hard time concentrating. People call/come by and assume because I work from home I have time to help them with things.

Things around the house always needs to be done.

I need to be in a room with a computer, desk and no other distractions.

I'm thinking that if I actually have to wake up, get dressed and go out to an office I will get more done in my day.

Does anyone do their internet marketing work outside of the home?

This whole "there are less distractions in a REAL office versus your home office" argument is pretty silly if you ask me.

Is your "real office" located deep inside the Bat Cave or something? I would only have an office if I needed onsite employee's and even then the "distractions" just don't disappear.

My phone can ring just as easily at home as it does at the office. As long as I have an internet connection Facebook can be just as distracting in an office at is can be at home.

Things need to be done at home? Um... how is that going to be any different when you have an office? You'll just get home and still have to do the chores and other "home stuff."

Seems to me that it would be a waste of resources to move into an actual office and have the extra expenditure when its not really needed. The focus to get your work done doesn't automatically increase because your environment changed.

That's like saying you moved out of Town A because it was full of drama and totally miserable. Then when you make it to Town B you find yourself in the same predicament because you just changed your location... not yourself.

You're going to fail. If you're afraid of failure then you do not belong in the Internet Marketing Business. Period.

That certainly would help if you were to end up making ends meet by doing SEO & marketing for local businesses that rrequire walk in meetings.

I have heard of people who get dressed in their work cloths hop in the car and drive around the block to set their mind set before starting work in their home office.

Saving your sanity may be a bigger pay off than greater income, working from home you are at work 24 hours a day, making it tougher to get away from the work.

In my opinion its not a clear cut and dry situation. If you have kids at home, or lots of friends and family stopping over then getting an office location can seriously help out. If not, then it may not make as much of a difference.

I personally can only work in my office setting for a few hours, but I do not get distracted and accomplish a lot fast. At home, I goof off a lot (ie take naps on the couch in there, take breaks to play guitar (which I keep in there), drink beer in my home office etc...

I prefer to work at my home office but when I need to buckle down on something I go to the real office.

We are all different so some things work for some and not others. I have a home office, I could never justify the cost of even a tiny office outside my home. I do sit down every morning and go thru the email, take care of that, then check the stats on my website, and then check my advertising and then I do what needs to be done to promote my site. I package up orders to be shipped and I take care of that too. I do take a break when I feel like it, and then go back at it. I have all day to do what's needed and I do get things done, but at my own pace.

Granted there are no kids here anymore, so I dont have that distraction but I do have a dog and two cats who require attention from time to time. The phone does ring, sometimes someone comes to the door but overall I like my office at home and would not want one elsewhere.

        • I have both a home and an off-site office. The main advantage of both is I always have at least one place to work without having to hang out with the other laptop jockeys at Starbucks.

Case in point: There was a flood upstairs on our master bathroom. Unfortunately water seeped through the floorboards and came through the ceiling in the family room. The dry-out took 5 days and involved huge dehumidifiers running at industrial noise levels 24 hours a day. I couldn't hear myself think at home, so I worked at the office.

Other case in point: At the office I have a skylight, which is great for natural light photography but turns the office into an oven on hot days. I'm working from home today. Offices are great for storage, for when you need a break from your spouse and kids/pets, when you're tired of answering the phone at home. (I *never* answer my office phone. It's not even hooked up. You wanna talk to me, call my cell.)

I rent a little office for $150 with utilities per month. Then I pay another $70 for internet and it is definitely worth it to be away from the house and all the distractions.

I agree this can be an ideal situation depending on your home enviorment. I have a fairly large 2 -story house so I can go upstairs to my 'office' to get away from the rest of the house. Seems to work pretty well.

Yea I would like to stay home too, but I have 1,400 sqft. I think in the right sized house and right age kids (not 0,2,4 like mine) home could work perfect.

But I have to say I do feel like I'm more in "work mode" at my office.

I've been working from home for over 5 years now, and I wouldn't have it any other way. I spent too much time living in offices and I can easily say that I'm far more productive at home.

On the flip side, some people just aren't cut out for it. Some people need that separate space to get things done.

BloggingPro I mean I get distracted by the things that needs to be done at home since I'm working at home. It's tempting for me to say "well let me go fold the laundry really quick". It just seemed like I was more productive when I worked outside the home (for someone else)

I wish I was more disciplined like you guys! I'm getting there. My home office/desk is located in my den so not really much privacy there.

I make my living from my online businesses so I'm seriously thinking about investing in my own little space on a monthly bases and see how it goes.

Working from home has it's benefits and shortcomings, working from home will save time, money and can be very efficient however when you are married, have kids and never leave the home that too can cause it's own set of problems. From my own personal experience you need to get out of your house especially if you are married (my situation). IMHO this is a must because it creates that "I miss you when are you coming home" atmosphere. This is very important in any healthy relationship unless you are husband and wife team working team and can stand to be with one another 24/7. Plus getting out is plain healthy. Stop staring at your screen now and go out

I understand about the distractions at home. I work from home and have a dedicated room for my office. When I go into the kitchen to get something to eat or drink, as tempting as it is to do the dishes, I don't do them. Same with cleaning. I don't clean until I am finished working for the day. If I worked outside of the office, I would not be able to clean, so I do not do any cleaning during my work time.

When I work, I close the door and ask my family not to interrupt me. It has taken some time, but they now respect my wishes and wait until I take a break.

It takes discipline to work at home and good communication with family and friends. You simply let them know that you are working, you will be available after a certain time.

I work from home a few days a week and definitely see how I'll try to run and throw things from the washer to the dryer while downloading large files and things like that. Sometimes I'll make a short list of things to do and not get up till they are done. I also work well in the local college library so that may be an idea to try (or regular library) to get in a few consecutive hours of work without any distractions. I do find a get out of the working zone when I am adding in household tasks because the type of focus I need gets changed.

    That's BS.

It must be someone just trying to sound clever - there's no correlation at all.

It's all down to the person.

When I choose to work from an office in my home, my family
members KNOW when not to disturb me, and don't. We've
set fairly clear rules that when I'm working, I'm working!

They also know when to keep the noise down so as not
    to screw up recordings.

I actually prefer grabbing my laptop and working from a nearby
beach when I find the fresh air actually helps to clear my mind.
Yes, some of the bikinis do distract me temporarily but I've
found that I can concentrate anywhere when I choose to.

I have rented office space before but prefer not going in to
    an office these days.

It's easier to budget time than going out to work. Personally, I would never want to rent an office or work at a Starbucks. My workspace is only a corner in the dining room, but that works for me. It's better than sitting in traffic and saves a lot of time that would otherwise be unproductive.

I just found that being in an office on my own was boring - more boring than working from home and at least from home I could just work any time I felt like it.

Also I found that commuting to an office while working for myself felt like having a job again - which was not what I wanted at the time.

Ah, I understand! Maybe there is certain things that make each one of us focus and we just have to find it!

I don't think it's so much about focus. When I didn't have much time I always thought "if only I could take 3 months off and just do my IM I'd be so much better off" but when I did have the time I just didn't do so much with it.

If you're just dabbling and don't have a solid plan - it won't matter where you work from. If you have a solid plan you can make it work from anywhere.
