Best way to bury a dead or potentially dangerous site.

I have a site that I'm kinda wishing I never set up. Yeah - it made me money - but - recently not so much.

I think sales went down because it got tagged as one of these: Large blogs with multiple, unfocused / unrelated subjects.

Is it safe to take the site down completely - even though there are 1000's of posts and 100's of back-links.

I'm trying to clean up any hint of trouble so I can continue to benefit from G products and revenue on other sites set up with more effort and less 'ease.'

Are there any specific steps one should take before removing a site with so many links?

You want to remove your association from the site?

Seems like selling off the domain giving it a new registered owner and being sure your adsense & analytics accounts are removed, if the site remains. THere's some value in the backlinks, sounds like there;s some resale value, if nothing else someone not particular could 301 redirect for some extra traffic.

You could use a permanent redirect to send the traffic it's still getting to another site you own. Doing so would also tell the search engines it's a permanent change, which can give the receiving site additional juice.

Just when you think you've got it all figured out, someone changes the rules.
