Is social bookmarking still an effective way to get traffic to websites here in 07/2011? I haven't read anything about it on the forums for a while so I thought I would ask.

I'm relatively new to blog marketing and SEO, but not to IM. Up to this point I've made almost all of my money from article marketing and AdWords (Which is why I find it funny that there are so many "Does article marketing still work?" threads, and feel a little silly starting this one) But I've never used social bookmarking before so I am wondering:

1. Does it still work? How effective is it? What are its general advantages and disadvantages?

2. Does manual vs. automatic submission make a big difference? I am well aware that in most things automatic submission services seem to be terrible.

3. It seems like it would be very time consuming just to set up all those social bookmarking accounts. Is it worth it to just pay someone else to do it?

Please feel free talk to me like I am a clueless 2 year old, as I really do know almost nothing at all about this subject.

I've created a site in the "gaming" niche which I believe has fairly broad appeal, and will be using it to learn about this aspect of IM because it's my understanding that the traffic won't be very targeted? Any advice based on experience would be much appreciated!

Hi Mike,

It still works very well for getting pages spidered and indexed. Not much good for link juice directly, but will give you some diversity and possible "social" benefits. If you do get traffic, probably isn't high quality.

If I can also add one of the benefits of social bookmarking here... whilst it may not specifically have a major positive influence over rankings, what it does do (which is equally as important here) is it balances out your links.

If you do a ton of article marketing, go nuts and balance out your links. This has worked great for me in the past, and helps make your back link structure look much more natural.

1. Mike, I currently use social bookmarking to get my content to the Top of Google in a matter of 1-2 weeks.

(Granted I use TribePro to get it syndicated to over 700 different people's social networks!)

2. Automation is mostly definitely a good thing when it comes to social bookmarking. It saves you the hassel.. Especially when youre getting it syndicated on more than 700 sites! (Although I do manually submit to my Twitter, Facebook, and Youtube!)

3. TribePro is linked with Onlywire, and I think it took me about 15 minutes to set up 20 different social networking accounts on different TOP networks!

P.S. I get TONS of traffic and leads from my social bookmarking. So, although some people say that it doesn't work, it works for me! I get my content at the top of Google within a week, depending on how competitive the keyword is.

  Whenever I make a new post to a blog and then submit it to Socialadr (a bookmarking service), I get a sale. So yes, it works.

yes, social bookmarks will still give you some benefits:
-index your backlinks quicker
-more link juice

I hope no traffic from social bookmark

Social bookmarking is good for backlinks, and that is about it.

On all of my sites, traffic from social bookmarking sites has a very high bounce rate, say in the 90% - 95% range.

To me, the traffic from social bookmarking is not worth a lot of time or trouble.

  I have had some decent results recently with it.
  
  I just launched my site that you can see in my sig. I had written a bunch of content but had done nothing to promote it. I then just clicked all the social bookmarking links I have on every post and submitted to my profiles and my views jumped from 4 one day to 76 the next.
  
  The one caveat is that there was about a 50% bounce rate because of StumbleUpon but still quite effective overall!

  You can do better than that on SU but you need to optimize for it by having attention-grabbing headlines and graphics. I generally get 2 page views per SU user.

  I am currently using social bookmarking to get my newer sites indexed faster. Not sure how valuable it is for older sites that have some age though. I would like to hear some others chime in with more experience in this area

  Like many have said, all that I can see it is good for is the indexing factor. I'm not too sure how much the backlink really matters. I've gotten tons of social bookmark backlinks and they don't budge my sites. The traffic doesn't seem to be targeted either. I still use it, but I don't put much time into it after indexing.

Yes its still works to get your site crawled frequently
but not to use automated tool or overdose.It will ruin your site authority

I use SBM as well in combination with RSS feeds for indexation and backlinking of course but if you just add a little effort to writing decent BM you'll find that you can get some pretty decent traffic from it.
