The only way to have decent success with a membership site is to offer something no one else is offering. There are so many plr etc membership sites which bite dust the time they come on. Therefore people want something unique.

Besides what ryanman and Imran said, I personaly prefer membership websites with fast response to your questions and those in which you seem to be buying something from a person instead of a company (though some people prefer the other way around).

Do anything to keep your costumers happy, just like in other websites and businesses.

Take a look at Noah's membership site "rich-jerks.com". It is a perfect example of a perfect membership site IMHO.

The bottom line is Noah delivers and over delivers.

In this forum I learned or heard from senior members their success by starting their own membership sites so on 2006 I guess I started my own membership site offering my own php scripts to my members. But for the past 2 years of the site operation I really don't made good income from the said site.

I guess average of $1000 a year or even less. I am not sure why I got traffic to the site most of the are from search engine search result but I don't get good conversion rate or new members regularly.

I know many senior and even new member here have their own successful membership site. I will appreciate any tips you can give or post that make a membership site successful.

I think membership sites are a great way to go especially with the recurring income stream model and not having to spend more money/time acquiring new customers all of the time.

Take a look at John Delevera's membership sites turbomembership.com turboplr.com those are the main two but he has many others. The turbo membership provides IM'ers the most use full tools and he overdelivers every month.

My membership sites (Free Traffic Bar and Internet One System) have built my annual income to 6 figures. The nice thing is if I take time off, the sales keep coming.

I am launching my third membership site at the end of January and hope to increase my total to 5 membership sites at the end of 2009.

I strongly suggest you read the book "Tribes" by Seth Godin. I think the ability to give people a feeling that they're part of something bigger and part of something meaningful is what separates successful membership sites from unsuccessful ones.

Also, blow people's socks off the first time they arrive. I just opened my membership site, and it's absolutely loaded with exclusive content. if you visit, and look in the sidebar, you'll see some of the reaction from members.

When you visit my site, what you'll be looking at is a spot on the sidebar where members can post comments and have them show up instantly. That's real social proof and it's golden to show to prospective members. My site is Wordpress based, so I use a plugin called WP-Wall to do that.

thank you for the plugin suggestion - i'm heading over to load it now.

i'm loading my site w/ monthly content - 30 -50 original articles in the member's niches. plus providing unique content, i need something that will allow users to download the informative content separate from the monthly content - the stuff that will be changing every 30 days. is anyone able to suggest a tool that can do this? also, how do you draw prospects to your membership site?

Didn't read through the rest of the posts, but here's some basics for being dramatically more successful with your membership site:

1) Focus on retention. This is the big stat to follow! Some ways of keeping members longer is to run an event driven site... always something new, always something they are waiting for, always something for them to talk about.

2) Referrals. If your site's good people will refer others to you - simple as that. You don't need any fancy affiliate programs for non-im related stuff... just quality and you'll get all the word-of-mouth referrals that you can handle.

3) Maximize the value of each member. This is a no-brainer... but you must do everything you can to earn as much as you can from the members that you do have. One great way to do this is to segment your members into groups on the back-end for better marketing. It will allow you to promote very specific things that you know they'll check out to the right groups within your membership base.

Some great suggestions, probably the only way to have some good results with a membership site is by making sure you are offering to people something that is unique and not readily available at other membership sites. People always want something unique and not readily available, therein lies success.

Jeffery above is correct. Noah Fleming's Rich-Jerks.com (nothing to do with the e-book) has been running for years and shows what can be done with a paid membership site when it is well run. It has a modest membership size by choice. Most members are also members here.

Hi Ed,

I think offering just PHP scripts is too broad of a subject to get memberships sold.

Why not offer something like "WordPress PRO PHP Scripts" for example? Since the code for just about all plugins are open source, you can take someones code, give them credit and modify it to suite your members, even based on their requests. Be a bit careful, because such code may not be commercially sold. In that case, you can look at the objective/functionality of such a plugin and design your own to meet your member needs. Just an idea...

At times you need to work on the product --Then the marketing will take care of itself.
