PSA - Be Sure to Update your WP Plugins

Just a friendly Public Service Announcement - Be sure you update your WP plugins.

I was in the process of updating all my sites to WP 3.2.1 but hadn't done all the plugins. I was hacked and of all places through the Akismet plugin. I can't remember what version, but I had to do a lot of fixing from that attack. It hit a bunch of my sites and got one account suspended on the host.

All is better now, but just be careful out there (and not lazy like me)

This is why I have a grand total of 1 or 2 plugins installed on my site.

Although now reading more, maybe it wasn't akismet after all -

How will I know if site is hacked? I updated mine yesterday, and the plug-ins and all seemed fine. But today I have had trouble on and off getting on to my site and also getting into the admin panel. Sometimes it all works fine and others I have to wait an age and then get message saying Internet Explorer cannot connect to the site. Is it possible I've been hacked? When I do get on the site it all looks fine though.

My hacks have been obvious - Site homepage is taken over with a bragging screen.

I have to replace the index.php file in the WP install using FTP then change all my login stuff. What I am finding is that on the sites that were hacked, even after I did that, the Akismet plugin no longer shows up in my WP backend, but the folder is still there. I am deleting the folder and reinstalling the latest version.
