Which is better, Blogger or Wordpress?

Im about to make a new website, got a pretty solid idea. However I was wondering which would be better for SEO etc, using Blogger or Wordpress?

I managed to get the keyword in the domain, I have unique content and I can get pretty much unlimited* backlinks.

Which platform would be best?

Wordpress on your own domain name is far superior, having used both platforms.

It doesn't really matter, because Blogger can never be your site. You don't own or control it and (as so many Warriors have discovered) it can just disappear in the night. End of story, really.

If you're really thinking of using Blogger, read this thread really slowly and carefully and then read it again.

This thread's worth a look, too.

Wordpress. Because you can own it, that way: it'll be your site. (Not wordpress.com, of course - self-hosted Wordpress).

I prefer to use wordpress because there are so many themes and plugins available to customize your site with the ease of use in the wordpress backend.

Are you talking about wordpress.COM where they host your blog on their server? Because commercial blogs are not allowed there.

So if that's what you're talking about, you should use Blogger.

But wordpress.ORG where you download the blog software and install it on your server is a whole different story, and this option is better than Blogger for most purposes.

    Wordpress is far better, IMO.

Also, while a Blogger site might not be your own site, you can still import/export the data. If you back it up regularly, it shouldn't be an issue if they decide to shut you down. You can just move the blog elsewhere. You run the same risk with your own shared hosting account - you might have your account suspended for no reason at all. That said, hosting companies are usually more reasonable and easy to contact than Google.

The only way you'll really have full control of all of your content is if you're running a dedicated server.

If you are trying to build a long term site and have some experience with web design then I would definitaley go with Wordpress.

I used Blogger to test the waters and check out Adsense. So far blogging can be pretty fun and easy on Blogger but the trick is getting people to visit.

    hi cka233,

you have mentioned that you have purchased a domain name.

then the best route to promote your website will be getting a hosting account and install wordpress in it.

this will give you more fine grained control over your website.

and in the feture if you want to flip your website it can also be done without any hassle.

    kindest,

Most definitely Wordpress if you are talking about Wordpress.org sites.. You have your own domain and hosting which you control and you are not subject to the vagaries of Blogger.

Also people often say that you have to pay for the domain name and hosting for each site. However I have found it useful to apply some domains as an Addon to an existing hosting account. So you can attach more than one domain name to a hosting account but still operate each site seperately.

Sounds like you have domain name already and you want to put it on a free host.

Wordpress does not allow commercial sites, so your only option is Blogger. If you map a TLD to blogger, there isn't as much risk as the others were pointing out. You still own the domain, and can move it elsewhere if they kick you out. Many peeps do it on blogger.

the Op is asking about Blogger & Wordpress. So blogger is the only option between the two. maybe i wasn't clear.

Still though, blogger has certain benefits that the others do not have.

Ah, you took him as meaning wordpress.com? Yes, I see - sorry - and thank you. The OP was perhaps not clear about "Wordpress".

I'm just making the point that you can have self-hosted Wordpress without spending a penny on hosting.

I 've been building hobby niche blogspot blogs for around 5 years, with zero problems. One of my blogspots has around 1,000 email optins, & that's an Adsense site.

If you are not spamming blogspot, I doubt you'll have any problems (I havn't in 5 years).

If your planning on spamming IM products forget blogspot!

I'll bet most of the sites that were ever banned on blogspot were pushing IM products.

If your going self hosted, Namecheap + Hostgator is the best value I've found, both are dependable, fast, low cost, & great support.

Just a question, Yukon, but you're surely not suggesting that because you haven't had a problem in five years, that all the Warriors who've reported the opposite in this thread and this thread and so many other threads like them are making it up, or that they were all "spamming"?! I hope you don't mind my asking, but do you really dismiss so much collective Warrior experience, explanation and advice purely on the basis of your own individual experience?

I certainly wasn't "pushing an IM product" at all, and wasn't "spamming", and if you'll excuse the observation, I believe that few people read sites' terms of service more carefully than I do. And it didn't help me at all.

This is just my own opinion & experience with blogspot.

I really think that If a person comments on another blogspot that they don't own, & that other blogspot owner flags the comment as spam, blogspot will go after your sites.

I've never commented on any blogspot sites, & my sites are still going strong.

That 1,000 email optins are from Feedburner (Google owns Feedburner), I think that also helps avoid getting a blogspot shut down.

All I know is my sites are still doing good.

I would definately recommend wordpress, using your own domain as well.

And also use blogger.com for backlinks to your site. The Google spider love Blogger and will get you index very quickly.

Using blogger is also a great way to get additional links found and crawled. All you have to do is post your links in blogger among some content and send over a ping.

Getting your profile links indexed this way works very well.

    Hope this helps!

Most people are missing the point here.

Having blogger or wordpress is only the vehicle on which you choose to share your CONTENT and INFORMATION to your reader.

I have seen many successful blogs both hosted on both these vehicles. WHY?

The content is better than anywhere else on the internet. People do not care if you are on blogger or wordpress, they care they are getting solid info, and good help. If they are getting that, they will return again and again.

I have seen blogger sites outrank worpress sites just because the info and updated content is so high quality. That is what it comes down to.

I lost 4 blogger blogs in 2009 because they got infected by malware – because a hacker invaded them, and until today nobody from Blogger helped me in any way.

If you depend on Blogger (Google), you are totally lost. Nobody cares about your rights. Forget Blogger as your main blog, however, yes, create blogger blogs, just in order to have backlinks and get traffic from blogger. It’s a good idea.

However, your main blog must be Wordpress like everyone else already told you in this thread. Use blogger only for traffic, and post a few articles there, without working hard. Focus on your own Wordpress blog.

Create also many Squidoo lenses posting your blog’s RSS feed in all them. You’ll get more traffic this way, and targeted traffic from your lenses, which must be about various related topics. Create a series of lenses about your products/services, whatever. A series with similar keywords, keyword combinations, etc, and promote all your lenses in each lens.

Here's the main issue: You don't OWN the blogs. So, if Google decides to take
away your Blogger privileges, all is lost. If you are willing to risk it, then no-one
will stop you. If you own the domain and the hosting, then you won't ever have
to worry about it being taken from you. In my own opinion, it's definitely worth
it if you own the domain yourself.

Just in case anyone thinks the dangers of using Blogger are theoretical and 'won't happen to me'... a couple of years ago I built a stable of over a dozen niche targeted blogs with Blogger. They had unique content, followed all the rules in Blogger's T&C (I don't do grey or black hat) and were not cross linked because they each served different markets.

I posted regularly to them and had minimal links out.

For six months all was fine but then one fine day I received an email out of the blue from Blogger telling me that all my blogs had been deleted because the did not comply with the T&C.

All my blogs, all the content, all the months of work disappeared at the turn of a switch by some anonymous Blogger employee who seemingly didn't have to give any reason why.

There was no chance of rescue - once they delete a blog it is gone forever - and they refused to answer any request on my part to explain exactly which aspect of the rules I had broken. Every email I send was responded to with the same 'Your blogs have contravened our T&C' without any detail of explanation. You can bet I re-read the T&C with a magnifying glass and never did find anything there that I had come even close to breaking.

I can only assume that there is a T&C that is published and another one which executives at Blogger use.

When you lose what amounted to a great deal of hard work as suddenly and comprehensively as that you pretty quickly get the message: Blogger is not a safe haven.

As far as blogs are concerned I an now exclusively a self-hosted Wordpress man. Why would anyone place control of their own business in the hands of a corporation that has demonstrated over and over again that its company motto, 'do no evil' has two words missing: 'to Google'. Wordpress allows you to be in control of your own business - Blogger does not.

I have made a lot of money from the Free Blogger platform, it's true that the blogs can be taken down at any time, but you can get your blogs reinstated...it's just a hassle and takes a while to do.

I say give it a try and find out for yourself, if I had listened to all the people saying Blogger is a waste of time on this forum then I'd have missed out on over $15000 of freelancing work and product sales over the past year.

Just cover your arse and be prepared to set up a self hosted blog, don't completely rely on income from your blogger blog. I have a strategy that works beautifully and I for one will continue to use the blogger platform to make money.

    Cheers Rob

I strongly believe that the hosted solution of wordpress is far better than the hosted solution of Blogger. Thankfully I have a lot of points to back up my thoughts and hope you all enjoy them
No Tracking - Without a doubt Google is monitoring blogger profiles, peoples actions, who comments where etc and using them to build up their own profiles on people. With wordpress that isnt the case as theres no search results they need to improve or targetted ads they need to display
Innovation - WordPress the non-hosted solution has literally innovated the blogosphere and means that new plugins and the introduction of blog plugins have allowed bloging to develop further than it could have if wordpress had never existed and blogger / typepad / moveable type where the only options people had
Stats Tracker - WordPress recently released the most awesome stats tracker imaginable and it can be used on hosted and non-hosted wordpress domain blogs. The stats allow you to see your most popular posts by views, comments etc etc.
Customisable / More Options - WordPress has long been the developers favourite platform to develop new themes therefore wordpress hosted solution users get a much bigger choice to use on their blogs

Blogger is owned by google, so it is probably indexed more, but wordpress is definitely better as far as a blog platform, and your content is safer. I have heard of people losing their blogger blogs, because google didn't like one thing on their page. Not good.

I use both, but WP is my favorite blogging platform because it's so dang user friendly and the customizations seem endless.

However, if you can get your keywords in a Blogger URL, then it should rank really well in the serp's.

I don't know how many sites I've lost because I built them on someone else's platform. That is short term thinking. Hosting is cheap ($10 a month) and you can add on unlimited domains. Install Wordpress on those sites and you are so much more future-proof. You can't know much it sucks to lose your hardwork because some website changed their rules. Don't live by their rules.

If you are new, and just want to experiment and learn the ropes, then Blogger can be a good alternative.

However, if you plan on jumping right in and working towards a business and income, then Wordpress is definitely choice #1.

With the numerous plug-ins plug ins you can come up with a very professional looking site with little effort using Wordpress.

I will opt for WordPress because it has a lot of SEO plug-in and others too. Most webmasters are using WP platform.

I personally use Wordpress in my domain and hosting. WP has lots of SEO friendly plugins, and it helped a lot! But if you want the free Wordpress.com and Blogspot here's what I can tell from observation :

    WORDPRESS
    pros :
    1. very very search engine friendly, more than blogger
    2. great themes and blog appearances
    3. there are no issue toward blatant blog deletion where you can lose all your hardwork, unlike blogger
    4. very user friendly
    5. suitable if you're a hobby blogger
    6. easy forwarding and redirection if you want to migrate to Wordpress.org

    cons :
    1. can't be monetized!!!!!!!!!!! you put affiliate link on your WP blog and WP will delete your blog without mercy, but they will send you warning before deletion. "you delete that money making content or we will delete your blog"
    2. pay $19/year for redirection if you migrate to Wordpress.org with paid domain and hosting. this is an option, if you want to maintain the old blog traffic.
    3. cannot edit CSS, if you're a geek you'll be a bit dissapointed because WP require you to pay if you want to edit CSS.

conclusion : if you're blogging to make money, NEVER use wordpress from the start!

    BLOGGER
    pros :
    1. can be monetized anyway you want
    2. search engine friendly
    3. user friendly

    cons :
BLATANT BLOG DELETION WITHOUT WARNING!! Listen, I've visited countless testimonials from deletion victims of Blogger, average after 2 - 5 years you own the blog Google will delete it from you and always use "Spam" or "TOS violation", blaming it to webmasters.

there's a complaint (in hubpages) where a blogger lost his blog after earned $500 a month from Clickbank. And a close friend of mine who lost his Blogger blog after earned him a good money from Amazon (I'm a regular reader of his blog and knows there are no "spam" like Google accused him to)

sometimes the reason for deletion is silly : "For commenting in other blogs in order to increase search engine ranking purpose" (from Google) WTF???

    Conclusion :
if you have earned money in Blogspot, quick...buy a domain and hosting, and redirect all your content in it. before Google take all your hard work!!

In my opinion, wordpress is better. It is easier to customize, has so many plugins, themes, etc., and is known all around the web.

Of course that's just my opinion, but I doubt that many big marketers use Blogger, wordpress has more features.

I like Blogger as sort of a test platform, but for a real site, I'd use a self-hosted WordPress site (yes, spring the money for it.)

What I have done in the past is set up content and so forth on a "scrap" Blogger site (I have one that I repurpose frequently) and point the domain name to that. Then when the WP site is set up the way that I like it, I move content to the WP site (and backdate posts) and direct the already purchased domain name to the new site.

I don't allow comments on blogs that I'm going to repurpose. That way there's no "OMG! All those great comments vanished!"

I also don't do any campaigns on the Blogger blog ... it's mainly to get content in order (decide what I want highlighted and what needs to be featured where) and experiment with some rewrites. I do have "Instant WP" which puts a WP blog platform on my computer, but for some reason I feel more compelled to work on it when it's on an Actual Blog.

I think that if I didn't have money for a real domain just yet, I'd start building traffic but use the Blogger site instead of a Wordpress site. Sadly, this will make starting your new WP blog on your own site a real head-thumping issue but at least you'll have something you can monetize.

    Your mileage may vary.
